Hi all,

Today we released a new build of DarkBASIC Classic. This new release is available to anyone who has ever purchased DarkBASIC from us in the past. This includes the boxed version and the electronic version. The new installer includes:

DarkBASIC Classic 1.13 English, Fully Updated
Full electronic manual
DarkBASIC Enhancements Pack, Full Release
DarkMATTER 1
DarkEdit IDE

It also includes a new set of example source code called 'Dark Extras'. This is a folder full of source code covering a huge range of subjects, from games and demos to basic tutorials and special effects.

Oh and as a little freebie there is a new intro I created (dbc_2007.exe in the Extras folder) to welcome all new DB coders

As I said at the start, you can download this now from your Order History providing you purchased any version of DB directly from us. Even if you didn't buy the Enhancements Pack or DarkMATTER, you now get it for free anyway.

Remember your Order History is linked on your *email address* used at the time of purchase. If that doesn't match, the download won't appear. Contact Support about this with a copy of your original receipt and we can move it over for you. Don't post here about it, only customer support can help you.

Enjoy!

Great news Rich - thanks for that!

Now I'd like to return the favour and present you with your first pain in the ass customer!

I have nothing in my history from the Welcome Page.

I've changed e-mail addresses many times since my original DBC order (full boxed version ordered over the net and posted out to me).

What's the correct procedure if you don't have a clue what the e-mail address originally was?

[Edit] Just re-read the last section again! Off now to find a contact link for customer support...

I know this is a silly question, but where do I find "Contact support"?

I bought DBC in the store, so no order history for me...

[edit] Is this normal that I don't have any serial key or anything?
I have a cd, the box and the small manual ("Getting Started in DarkBASIC") that came with it, but no serial...

Lost in Thought:

In previous versions it was a compressed exe file called XEdit.exe or similar.

But, it was always an out of date version and you had to download V1.56 and install that instead.

[edit] double post, sorry

[edit2] I noticed you have to give your "receipt". What is it?

The boxed version has no serial number, the CD itself is your proof of ownership.

Having bought from a store instead of us, we are unable to offer the upgraded download, sorry. The issues involved with validating everyones proof of purchase is too much.

Likewise I've changed addresses since my original DBC order (full boxed version 1.08 ordered over the net and posted out to me).

I no longer have the receipt but I do have the box and everything that was inside
INCLUDING THE REGISTRATION CARD.

What's the correct procedure if you are not sure what the e-mail address originally was or have the five plus year old receipt? Additionally I think that my 2001 order predates this site. darkbasic.com was the site then I think.

Order and billing support can not help this situation.
Am I just out of luck?

I'm in the same situation as heartbone, only I dont have a receipt because DBC was a christmas gift in 2001. I did manage to find the CD and books, but I remember the box getting destroyed. I even have the enhancements CD someplace.

I found a ton of stuff I forgot I owned while looking for that old disc.

I bought Play Basic through this site a couple of months ago and it does not show up in my order history.

I suppose it's because I used paypal and a different email addy was used from the one I used to register here.

This tracking method of purchases by forum users may have a few holes.

Lost In Thought, after looking at the support contact options, I do not know how to approach support with a reasonable plan to establish that I indeed bought DBC from darkbasic.com.

You have a name don't you? Or a postal address? Support can search on any criteria given at the point of purchase (first name, last name, address, zip code, email address, heck even the $ value of your order) and they can search ANY order ever placed with the company since it started in 1999 - regardless of which site it was placed on. If it was ordered directly from us, it'll be in the sales database.

If you bought it from somewhere other than us, you're out of luck. If someone bought it for you, and *they bought it from us* then that's fine, get them to contact us and we can sort it out.

If you can't remember your email address, it doesn't matter, as long as you can remember your name if you can't remember that then you've more important things to worry about than updating DBC.

Still outa luck then, cause I'm pretty sure they bought it before this website existed. The forum was still on the original darkbasic.com website. And I bought Pro from RGT.

I too have a boxed version of DBC, which means I bought it at a store. I am teaching a class for kids that starts this Sat. The school just bought DBC for the class and now their version/build is probably newer than mine. So, what do I do to download the newer build so that we match?

As long as you bought your copy and the school bought the later version, I can see no reason why TGC should have a problem with you taking a copy of the school's newer version.

"As long as you bought your copy and the school bought the later version,..."

I work at the school only part time. The IT department there might have a problem with me "taking" software.

I think that Dark Basic has abandoned their store purchase customers.

But that's the point - you aren't!

All upgrades with DBC are free - as long as you bought the version you currently have. You are entitled to have the latest version available.

I'm not suggesting that you steal one of their CDs - just use it to grab a copy - or at least use one to install it over your older version.

Just explain the position first and I'm sure they won't mind you borrowing one of the CD's for an evening. That's assuming they have a legitimate setup with a bought copy of DB for every machine they are running it on...

***

I don't get along well with this IT department. They wait till the last moment to do things that were requested well in advance, make it seem like they are going out of their way to do a big personal favor when they do it, and if anything is wrong it is NEVER their fault, and I later hear a distorted version of the incident that has gone through a rumor mill. So, no, I'm know better than to ask.

I tried to get them to get the software about 8 months ago when I was setting this all up. I handed a printout of the free academic use web page directly to the one IT person. They apparently did not even begin doing anything until about 2 weeks before this first class and apparently made it sound like I am mistaken in saying the the software was ever available for free.

Trust me, it will be identical. And if it isn't, you can download the 1.13 update from the DB site to make it so. There hasn't been an update or new version of the core language for *years* now.

I'd like to see the new intro, but it's not on my order page (considering I can't even remember where I bought DBC from, that's hardly surprising!) - could you upload the intro for us old schoolers please .

Sure, here ya go. Not exactly mind-blasting, but I always loved the "builds up bit by bit" style of demo, which is what this is.

I like it - especially when it turns into a 3D cube. It's funny to remember Stoked running at 30fps max!, nowadays I could probably double up on everything and run at 60fps.

This may be important information to someone.

On my new XP Pro system, finally fully updated, I just installed the New DarkBASIC Classic Download (Jan. 2007).

Then I copied over the source and media for my famous Two Flags game and compiled it. (Two Flags 2007 XP on the attached picture.)

The game compiled, but runs buggily.

I then uninstalled the new "DarkBASIC Classic 1.13 English, Fully Updated" compiler and
installed DarkBASIC v1.08 from CD along with those mandatory two v1.10 installs before finally running the 1.13 patch and installing DarkEDIT 1.56.

I then created a seperate identical build folder and repeated the compile. (Two Flags 2002 XP in the picture.)

That compiled game ran perfectly!

Notice in the attached screen dump that it has the identical size of the released version of Two Flags that was built on my old Windows 98SE system on March 31st.

Apparently TGC is emulating Microsoft in releasing different versions of software under the same version number.

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

Now the big question.

Which version is the correct 1.13?

The 2007 download version?

Or my hodgepodge patched compiler, which apparently can be replicated regardless of OS version?

Are schools which accepted the Free For Schools offer (of around 2004) eligible for this upgrade? My school did, but does not have an order history due to this. Would the original e-mail that was received be satisfactory?

Well I for one am not impressed with the 'new' one at all.

Many moons ago, when I first started using XP, I had problems with my DBC programs starting with a flashing white/black screen - and often with a square around the mouse cursor.

I got around it with a Sync On: Sync Rate 0: CLS 0 at the start of my programs.

Now with the '2007' version the flashing has returned and the above workaround no longer works. What's more, all of my old code that didn't flash now flashes. And, no matter what I change, I can't stop the flashing.

It's curious that code which flashes for me doesn't flash for others and other people's code which doesn't flash for them, flashes for me!

I can only think that this is down to me downloading and using the 2007 version whereas they did not.

So, is there any chance that the wrong (older maybe) version has been inadvertently included in the 2007 package?

And, as heartbone asks, which version is in the download as it's definitely not the V1.13 I used to use.

I suppose I can always dig out the old DB.EXE and go back to it.

Man I thought my post was invisible!
Now that it has been confirmed that there are differences...
There are but two possibilites.

1) Inadvertent bug(s)
2) A new version was compiled (no way says Jose )

Lame. I got mine from a store as a gift quite a while ago. Although I pop in and out of using DarkBASIC, im quite dissapointed.

So how come that:
Quote: "
You are entitled to have the latest version available.
"
but only if you bought it from the website? Surely only a small percentage bought it from the website, as they would see it in a store, buy it, and then 'goto' the website found on the box. there should be a way to prove that you own it in order to get he latest version, like typing in a part of the manual.
As you can tell I want my moneys worth. (All £2.50 of it. eBay is a great resorce)
