If I remember correctly, Bug! for the Saturn also worked pretty well.

the first game is great same goes for the second one the 3ed kind of bad but not awful sonic and knuckles is the best one they ever made great level design music everything was right but since them everything gone down hill fast the 3d Sonics are appalling and the new 2d ones seem to lack something in the game play not sure what

You ever love a game, then play it nowadays and just can't get into it?

Not talking about Sonic, I mean Sonic 2 is one of the games I play quite a lot of to this day, I mean these old Megadrive games that used to be so cool.

For years my face MD game was Kid Chameleon, that was a mad platform game where you'd wear various helmets that give you special powers - but when I try to play it these days it just annoys me, there's none of the original skill left in me, but I think we must be very forgiving with games as kids, and only the elite games hold their worth. Gonna give Sonic DS a go, I only played the first level so far but the mechanics are awesome, like the spinny poles and gears, that stuff always keeps me amused.

i have got sonic ds, it's hard but cool. i also have kid chameleon, i remember the days when my brother and i would chip in to rent it (we didn't have much money then. (still don't!)) and we got as far as a certain level where there would be a wall of blades etc. moving in from the left. we couldn't get past it. i bought the game on ebay a few years ago, and I think (been a while since i played it) I'm still stuck on it to this day! ah well, one day I'll get there....

I remember that. Although IIRC there were many levels with that in.

dude there have been plenty of 3D platformer games that have worked well. Ever played Metroid Prime(or metriod prime 2)? That game is freaking awesome man, the first better than the second which i'm playing right now. A few others, such as banjo kazooie, worked well. I can't say mario 64 because i've never played it.

whAATT!?!? If you have a ds, buy it for the ds, if you have a Wii, get it on the virtual console.

I imagine the 3d platformers overall work fairly well, seeing as there are so many. In fact, as long as it's more than just tedious jumping rutines, it's fun (the same goes for 2d plaformers. It isn't fun if it's nothing BUT precise jumps). But there does happen to be toins of room for improvement overall.

And Sonic ds is amazingly amazing. I've beaten it, and can say the only bad part about it is the voices of tails and that bunny thing.

I have sonic advance, and after playing Sonic Rush all I could think of was how slow sonic was going.

People always talk about Mario 64 like it's the penultimate 3D platformer, but I disagree. It was groundbreaking when released because it was the absolute first of its kind, but if you play it now, it has many things that are very frustrating (crazy camera angles, many jumping and leaping puzzles, etc.)

Maybe for other people - obviously or they wouldn't still be made, but I just find the weird camera angles annoying - and that went for Mario 64 as well.

To try to explain, often, to get your character to go in a striaght line requires you to "arc" around on the stick, as the camera moves from the side (perhaps because of obstructions behind the character) around to the rear (or worse - somewhere else). To me, that is counter intuative - I don't want the 3D to get in the way of the gameplay and I feel that it just does. To fall off a platform and die because of these control problems is not good design IMHO.

I know exactly what you mean! Dodgy camera/control systems have always bothered me in 3D platformers.

I found the 360 game disappointing to be honest. The storyline had too many plotholes and the gameplay was no where near as good as Sega was making out. It is enjoyable in some aspects though, the characters' attacks are pretty good and the bosses can be fun.
It's not as good as some of the other games though, I think they've lost their magic so to speak since Sonic Adventure 2 which has always been my favourite. If you ask me Sonic games have been going downhill since then.
