I don't know. From what I can see, it's only about the size of a dime. I don't know what the big deal here is.

Get this though GatorHex, the sun is actually one of the smaller stars... There are stars that would engulf our sun thousands if not millions of times I'd venture to say.

Yeah, look at one of those huge stars and the sun is a meerly a tiny little spot. Imagine the Earth then, it's actually hard to imagine things getting so small that they seem microscopic, even though the Earth is actually huge (from our own point of view).

Well, WE are huge to a flea's point of view. After all they live on animals, to them, a small dog is the size of a neighborhood. Nope, our planet, it's people, we are all so insignificant. When you take it into perspective and imagine the immensity of the universe and the depths of space. Our troubles here seem nonexistent and oh so trivial. What is the worth of a single tiny spec in the universe?

I always knew Xander was from another world

Yes, there was a scaled image of stars/planets in the universe posted not so long ago, our sun may be huge, but it is minuscule compared to some of our bad boys out there.

Question about the other thread, does anybody know just where Antares is, because apparntly it take's several years for it's light to reach us, and the sun's light takes eight minutes

If that thing goes supernova, we wouldn't even notice it, unless you happened to be looking through the eyepeice of the hubble telescope at that moment.

anyways, VV Cephei is reportedly bigger then Antares and would create quite some noise when it dies. I would totally want to watch that happen with my own eyes.......somehow.

*Stares at the sun for several minutes*

Hmm, looks tiny to me... uh oh....

Yea, our sun might be small compared to other suns, but compared to the universe, we are not even an atom! And if there are other universes inside a larger universe then we are so insignificant it's not even funny.

@Jerico2day: Nice song, is there a tune that goes with it?

The big question is, if you saw the sun go supernova, and the fiery blast of death was coming at you with minutes to spare, what would you do?

But it doesn't show the scale of our galaxy, which is quite bizarre. We're used to seeing the galaxy in books, with the planets to scale, but the space between them is all wrong.

If you scale the earth to the size of a pea, then Pluto would be 2.5 kilometres away when drawn to the same scale!!!

When our sun gets older it'll expand and turn into a red giant destroying the earth long before it gets anywhere near going supernova (if ever). What I find funny is how science shows talk about the sun destroying us all... like the human race will still be alive 2 billion years from now.

If you see the supernova it's already too late. You might have just enough time to realize you're dead right before your body is atomized.

Our sun so you know will never become a super nova...

And there have been occurences where a supernova was visable without the aid of a telescope. I'm not sure when it was exactly, but there was a supernova sometime in the past 1000 years that was visible even in the day. I don't remember, but it might have given off more light than the sun for a while.

Quote: "like the human race will still be alive 2 billion years from now."

By then we'll have evolved into the awesomeness race...

Frankly I'll be kind of surprised if we don't kill ourselves off a bit less than 2 billion years before that.

The scale of the universe, heck, just our solar system, is really too much to wrap our heads around. We always skim over the emptiness because there's just too much of it. That's not to say we can't imagine or understand the universe, just that the vastness is pretty inconceiveble for us when try and think of the scale accurately.

Quote: "the eyepeice of the hubble telescope"

What eye piece? And light doesn't reach Hubble any faster. And also, Hubble is not the best telescope...

edit:Heh, I just got this image of an astronaut clinging to the Hubble Telescope looking though an eyepiece

Nah evolution is a load of crap there are sooo many things that disprove the theory its unreal. I doubt we will be here 2billion years from now but that wont be due to evolution nor extinction. I wont get into any philosophical arguments but that is my point of view.

I could say the exact same about the other side of the coin, ofcourse I won't.

Sslong as humans manage to expand beyond our solar system then I don't see why we would become extinct however if we are stuck to earth/moon and mars then yes 2 billion years there's bound to be some sort of war or accident that destroys everything.

It's understandable that you want to voice your opinion, but there is an own section in the AUP about that very subject.

Quote: "3.9 Debate about any form of creationist / evolutionary theories"

Quote: "I expect all humans will be dead within 500 years from today. We have this unquenchable desire to doom ourselves with our own inventions. "

Yeah, we humans have fought eachother for many thousands of years, why should the future be any different? Can't say i'm optimistic about it.

About the supernova thing, our sun will just collapse and engulf what is left of the solar system? How boring, it could atleast give off one last colourful display.

so everyone knows, I wasn't serious about the awesomeness race thing. Whether you believe in evolution or not, it should have the same context. As a joke. hence the face.

Interesting Fact: If Jupiter were much larger, the weight on itself would cause the fusion process, and it would become a star, though a pretty pathetic one.

Relativity is some crazy stuff. But quantum mechanics is insane. Relativity makes sense to our level of logic, but quantum mechanics... some of the things you hear about it seem pretty impossible. After a while, I realized most of it is just really poor explanations, but still most of it is far out there.
