I was looking at Yahoo! News like I normally do once or twice a day, and came across this interesting article in the health section:

Quote: "LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly one in three Britons think that if a woman jumps up and down, washes or urinates immediately after sex, she can prevent pregnancy, a survey revealed Monday."

Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070212/od_nm/britain_sex_dc;_ylt=ArWN0JvTaWSdlFm_Xju_Zy_VJRIF

How many of you believe this? Has anyone here jumped up and down with a member of opposite sex to prevent pregnancy?

New survey, most Britons think that if a woman takes the pill after having sex, she won't get pregnant. I have never heard of such a ridiculous thought, I know it seems as though a third of the population are chavs, but they aren't even that silly, few people actually believe in old wives tales here.

What I reckon happened is, one of these reuters dudes had a really bad day and thought "Screw this, I'm not interviewing that many people" and went into a pub, probably an Irish pub thinking "Ah they're all the same" and interview a bunch of drunk Irishman.

Hardly a survey You can make a drunk Irishman say anything, now I just need to get my Nan p***ed and convince her she's a fairy princess.

@Seppuku: I dont know about in the UK, but in the states we have "the plan b" pill for the morning after... it does help prevent pregnancy, though I think some shops refuse to sell it, saying it doesnt teach teens "responsibility" or something along those lines.

the sex education system just does not work in schools. it was and maybe still part of science lessons. it's only taught when your about 12 (end of yr7) may be different elsewhere.

you are just taught the basics, not into that much detail in which the news article says. i bet if they asked the same questions in another country, you'll get nearly the same answers.

in some ways, you sometimes rely on older friends or goto your local gp. some of the questions you will probably find out at a random point in your life. e.g. if your struggling to get her pregnant.

Year 6,7 and Year 10 here. Year 10 is the one where we put the condom on the banana. Other than that we get a lot of guest speakers on it, including guys going on about drugs, smoking and alcohol. Our last one was a play about the effects of drug driving, a true story with a group of teenagers that had a terrible car crash, the way in it was acted was really good, it was actually quite sad, so much so people who had been in a car crash or experienced it in some left the room.

Quote: "ban contraception and teach the slags a lesson."

No, there's a reason for contraception, and not to stop 14 year olds from having kids either, if you want to teach 'slags' a lesson, give them a condom with a hole or headache tablets instead of contraceptive pills.

You can't teach teenagers responsibility, if we were responsible then we wouldn't be teenagers. In the UK, from the sounds of all these talks we get, doctors, Chemists etc. seem to be very supportive instead of saying, "It's your responsibility". I think it's silly to refuse the pill to a teenager so she can have kids, for one thing it'll ruin her life and the child's quality of life won't be good either, knowing people who have had babies at a young age, the child will probably be only taken by social services or something else.

Anyone seen the Independent today? Britain's kids are doomed.

As for banning contraception to "teach the slags a lesson"... are you retarded? The problem stems from lack of contraception, lack of education and lack of responsible parenting.

As for your question Torrey, I can easily believe that nearly a third of Britons think that, because nearly a third of Britons are retarded. I very much doubt anyone on this forum believes that, because despite what it seems from time to time, everyone's reasonably smart on here and any apparent dumbassery often stems from a user's teenage arrogance.

Unfortunately surveys like this are utterly flawed. Smart people don't answer them because they're too busy doing things like work and scoff at the idiocy of the questions, leaving the left over to be the gauge for a nation's intelligence. Believe me I've worked in market research and the amount of people I called that were struggling to find two braincells to rub together was staggering.

20 million people do not believe jumping up and down prevents pregnacy.

They asked three people, one of them nearly said yes, hence "nearly one in three people said yes".

Where I live in Ohio sex education starts in grade 4. It's a rather basic overview, but once the student gets in 7th grade the school will start teaching the "ins and outs" of sex. When they teach it this in depth it puts me on the fence whether or not it's a good or bad thing kids that age know that much.

There is a growing culture in this country that the govornment can and will take care of those who don't particularly want to work. All you need is a kid and you automatically get a house. If you've got a house, and you're on benefits, then why work?

The sort of people who answered "yes" to that question are probably trying to get pregnant.

Well it doesn't matter, with drugs on today's market, they'll stop you from having a kid one way or another.

As an aside, Portugal just promulgated/legalised abortion on demand up to 10 weeks last Sunday. This brings us in line with most European countries but which I personally think is _a bad idea_ in many levels...

You can´t kill something that isn´t alive yet. It stops the world from being worse than it is already. Imagine how many unloved/cared for/etc kids there would be without abortion. Isn´t basicly the lesser of two evils.

You'd think so, but I've heard debates saying that it needs to be sentient or have a certain level of brain functions to qualify, but all of the pro-abortionists I've met at least agree that it's alive.

It's a debate that hasn't been given an agreeable answer in ages, you're not going to solve it, the unborn child is alive from when it starts functioning, when it's a 'person' is often debate, Scientists and Catholics will probably agree (Religion and Science agreeing oh no! Call the Pope, I think we have miracle! ) that it's at conception, but some will say it don't.

So we're not going to solve it here. So lets not try, it's getting too close to religion and politics, plus from other forum debates, what's the likelihood that we're going to solve it, no matter how sensible you think your opinion is.

While I would love to join the debate, we all know what's gonna happen. You have a better chance of shovelling crap against the tide then changing someone's opinion on abortion.

This country is a complete mess. Its all the damn yobos on the streets who have the IQ equivalent to that of a small watermelon.. even then thats being generous. They are a waste of space. Practically all of them fail in life and live on the dole, using up benefit money supplied by the hard working tax payers of the country.
There should be a Law in this country where people with a certain "IQ" or personality should be allowed to arm themselves.
Too many hard working students and adults are being mugged and killed by these "pests".

This country needs a Civil War.... or another Margret Thatcher! Tony Blair's Socialistic Views have sent this country to the doghouse!!!! people have to fork out £3000 per year to study a worth while course.... just because he has his DAMN idea that everybody should have the right to go to uni and study a non degree like football studies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arrrrgghhhhh!!!!!!!

@BiggAdd -

My contribution to the cause is to install a £400 tracker in my car. When it gets nicked, which is surely will, the thieves will be caught within 30 minutes and sent to jail where I will poke them with a long bamboo stick and tell them stories about what I'm going to do to their sisters.

See, we can fight back.

Viva La Revolution!!

Well, a civil war may work, but I don't feel it necessary, despite that it would be ironic if I were to lead an army against Blair, living in the home town of Oliver Cromwell and all. (For you foreigners, he was the dude that won England's last Civil War)

To be honest, I am too fed up with this country, it's people and administration, shame really, we have some really nice places and even really nice people dotted about here and there. But what I'm thinking is, try to do something about it, if I fail, move to a different country and let England fall into a self inflicted chaos.

Quote: "(This is why i never watch the news now.... it gets me so wound up!!!!!!I read the paper though.... as i can filter out all the garbage...aka British politics)"

Yes, I avoid reading the Sun, The Mirror or any other tabloids, because every time I do, it boils me up. I can see where some of our problems derive from, the media, someone seriously needs to assassinate Rupert Murdoch, so what if he owns Sky, most of the news channels, including Fox, Myspace, most of the newspaper. He's Goebells in this world (I have got the right name haven't I, Goebells was Hitler's propaganda man right?)

And 3k a year to go to uni, not a fanciful thing for me either, my sister had to pay a lot less. I mean accommodation isn't that cheap either, £60 a week, if you're lucky.

But, I think we should leave it there, we're getting too close to politics.

Check this out if you want Addy buddy, it's an Irishman trying to start a movement, he was the lead singer to One Minute Silence before they split up.

http://www.ppunk.com

@Fallout, then you charge the thief for the tracker, for each thief, make a profit, teach them a lesson, you shouldn't have to pay to keep your car safe from losers. (Equally for your computer system and any of your possessions)

@Seppuku - Please stop with those kind of remarks or expect to be slapped. Seriously, you can't violate the AUP by posting your political views, then say "We're getting too close to politics." That's just like shooting a cat then saying "But I won't do it again because we're not allowed to shoot cats."

I fail to see what was said that was so explicitly political - he said a civil war "may work", and he's fed up with the country. The remainder of the post is very different in terms of subject, and would only reach political stuff in a very abstract convoluted sense.

Unless 'politics' has become the new word for 'opinion'...

You can teach almost anyone responsibility. The teenager knows that pregnancy comes from sex, it's her problem now. Giving her a pill is just strengthing the mentality in today's world that sex is for entertainment. The reason people think sex is for entertainment is because there's a hard wired desire for sex that acts as a failsafe to keep the human species alive. People are abusing that side affect by having sex only for entertainment and using pills and abortion to kill the natural outcome of their actions.

A week before my 13th birthday, I was freaking out because I heard that 1/3 of teenagers have sex for entertainment, and was afraid that somehow this metaility would be forced on me. I hated turning 13 because people would call me a "teenager" which is assoicated with many steriotypes that are mostly the complete opposite of who I am. I'd give anything to be 12 again, that was the last year people saw me for who I am.

It's been sidestepped in this thread more than once. It isn't up for discussion. The AUP rules are there for a reason.

Quote: "Unless 'politics' has become the new word for 'opinion'..."

Uh, no. There's a rule not to discuss politics. If you go ahead and say "Down with Bush, he is such a loser, etc." and then say "But this is getting too political" you have already crossed the line.

He even said this which further confirms my point:

Quote: "But, I think we should leave it there, we're getting too close to politics."

Having a rule does not give you permission to lightly discuss the topic then say "but let's not discuss this more." The rule implies that it should be followed all the time

I didn't think I was talking politics, just getting to the surface, hence the stop. The media thing, it's true, there is some control there, I'm currently studying the Rupert Murdoch newspapers, and the language and content used in his media that control there audience, it's in all of the tabloids and subtle in his broadsheets, and if he has some form of control, then there is a problem (Unless you consider somebody with the power to unconsciously control the opinion of it's audience a problem?).

I probably went a bit off track saying he was like Goebells or should be shot. For that, then I'm sorry for saying it, but I was conscious of actually being political, but only drawing near (Had I been what I would define political, the post would be quite deep) hence I made the last comment, just incase anything I said made people want to start talking about the current political affairs in the UK

The rest, is just me being fed up with England, and would have said that's just an opinion than just going into my political beliefs. But if you still feel that breaks the AUP, then I apologise, and will try to be more careful when saying things like that, so they can't be classed as political.

1/3 have sex for entertainment? what do the other 2/3rds of them do it for? Punishment? Education?

The fact is Code Dragon no matter how old you are, you're going to be stereotyped, so get used to people having preconceptions and then work on breaking them if you're so bothered about it. Your grumpy angst ridden "why does no one understand me" post reeks of teenage hormones I'm afraid.

1/3 of them have it, and that 1/3 does it for entertainment. The other 2/3rds don't do it.

To tell you the truth I was never stereotyped in my entire life until now. I know there's a lot of stereotypes out there and I was lucky to get this far, but it's just pointing out how messed up this world is. Less than 15% of the population is happy with their lives, if something's not messed up there I don't know what is. No wonder people lots of people at my school do drugs, they're unhappy. I was shocked when I changed schools that people went from thinking of sex as a gift from God to a tool for getting high. I suppose the reason only a handful of people in school accept me is that I don't do smoke, do drugs, do sex, say the f word every five seconds or any of that stuff. I'd rather be different than join them, but it's a shame that I have to be different alone. Even some people on a Game Dev forums hold the same beliefs. That's just the way the world is I guess, thanks Manic, I'll try to work on changing it.

It's been sidestepped in this thread more than once. It isn't up for discussion. The AUP rules are there for a reason."

So even fictional and hypothetical politics are banned? Besides the fact it was obviously irony/humour?

Wow, I better stop posting anything in case I get blasted for fictional politics...

On Jeku's second post:

Look at the rest of the first bit, I was making a comment of how it would be ironic, not how I would support it, because I wouldn't.

Quote: "If you go ahead and say "Down with Bush, he is such a loser, etc." and then say "But this is getting too political" you have already crossed the line."

I wasn't saying 'Down with the administration of Blair' or 'Don't with Blair' he's a loser, just that I am fed up with it, if they had a sudden change, I would be more supportive, I don't think anybody is a loser, I personally wouldn't call being fed up with the administration politic, perhaps the reasons why, but I didn't mention them, because that would be political talk. Then I started to talk about how I don't like the fact things are getting too expensive, I wouldn't call that political.

I already mentioned the newspaper bit, probably the closest thing I would call 'political thoughts'.

Or perhaps my comments about England going into Chaos, that probably could be seen a little political, but really, a general state of the people, not the way things are run.

The link I gave was political, but not discussing political, just letting people click on it if they wanted to, I even said what it is, like some of these sig's CR has had, a link to something political with a note of what it is, I see no harm there.
