But of course, not better than the 360
Who's up for a "sony is crap" discussion? Those threads are way fun.

...lol? Why is it cool? Telling us it's worth more than the Wii is pointless. Everyone already knows the technology is better and has alot more features.

If you have 600 dollars or whatever it costs, fine, by all means buy a PS3 But us cheapskates and poor people are resigned to getting a Wii already... though that's the only console I want anyhow.

maybe if they were cheaper and had more then one decent game out

nah, the wii is innovated, and i see it creating some of the best gaming experiences in the future of gaming.

what it breaks down too is:
playstation 3 = power
wii = inovation
xbox 360 = xbox live

it's all about taste i'm not dissing the playstation, i'm just waiting for when they start to come out with more games that utilize everything about it...really just waiting for oblivion to come out lol..though, 360 would be the route considering they have oblivion and halo 3

I can already see where this is going, unfortunately. Jordan, I'm definitely with you, the PS3 is an awesome console, but you've just walked into a firestorm of anti-sony sediment. Off the top of my head, I can only name three TGC members (four counting you) who love, like, or even appreciate the PS3. It's sad, but true. I'll bet anything that if this thread gets 50 posts, at least 35 of those will be anti-sony . But I definitely agree, the PS3 is an awesome console and the people who don't want one don't know what they're missing

now now...we all know that if we had a PS3 vs Wii fight, that the Wii would just pull the PS3's heat sink out and it would explode.

besides, Wii supports exercising

I have nothing against any console. I would be just as happy on my birthday if I got any of the 3 consoles. They are all awesome. No doubt they are young and lacking games, and the games that are out don't take full advantage of the new technology.

I myself favor the Wii, because I am not a heavy console user. It's cheap, and it's controls seem very innovative for the shooter genre of console gaming. Also, Nintendo makes my most favorite console games.

My grudge isn't against the PS3. No. I HATE sony as a whole. I can't stand what they did to SWG, I mean, there's a scar I can't heal.
It's like finding the perfect game, and play it for 2 years, like being in your best dream. Then, later in the dream, a weasel or an idiot i dont know for sure, named either John Smedley or Julio Torres comes and tells you that "you are not experiencing the game" as it should be, so the morons cripple the game to such extent that you're left with a feeling that mankind is going to hell.
I HATE Sony, and I hate SOE even more.

What did they do to Star Wars Galaxies? I was going to get that game but, by the sounds of it, maybe I shouldn't! Was it really bad?

Well, you could be any of 36 proffesions, which included pet handler which was awesome; you could be a bio engineer, in which you could take dna samples from all the animal in the game and then mix them and make your own pets; you could be a bounty hunter and kill jedis (which were real players); you could be proficient on pistols, carbines, rifles, or other melee combat styles; you could be a weapon crafter, armorsmith, architect, a chef, or simply and artisan, where you could make vehicles... and so on.
The game was so well planned, that it didn't have the grind factor, at all. To make money, you could take missions, or be a crafter, which was very profitable, since the only way to get weapons, was to buy them from a crafter; same with armor.
Hell, you could even be a musician, and more or less "compose" songs (by compose I mean you could assemble a bunch of different riffs). You could even be some sort of drug pusher.
Hell, everything in this game was player driven. Everything.
It was so versatile, that you would never get bored by it.

I think I'll stop here, or else I'm going to start crying or something.

So what they did to the game? They cut all the proffesions into only 9 "iconic" proffesions, which are all crap. The game is not longer player driven, and it's definitevly not a RPG, more of a shooter or something.
Crafters? they now all make crap stuff, so no one buys from them anymore.
Entertainers? Cantinas have been empty, since theres no need for an entertainer "mind buff" any more.
Doctors? we don't need "overpowered" players.
Combat Medics? This one was one of the best proffesions ever. You get to grow fungus, and chemicals to make chemical/bacteriological weapons. It was awesome. Awesome? hell, let's cut it from the game then.
And so on.

@Dextro: I agree with you. I used to play SWG until they had to ruin it. IDIOTS. COMPLETE IDIOTS. I don't know what they were thinking. How many complaints did they see about the game previous to the overhaul? Very few. Look how many people left after what they did. Man, did they mess up, ruined one of the best games ever made. Like you said, EVERYTHING was run by the player. It was like another world. Even the economy fluctuated and was interdependent. While one server would sell houses for 100,000 whatevers, another would sell for 500. I know that may not sound like something great, but when something like that happens, you know you have a very functional and intertwined game. I didn't know it was Sony that changed the whole thing though. But now that you mentioned that it was them, I hate them too (not really, but I am mad at them ).

Wow, like what George Lucas did to the original Star Wars movies and the three bits of filth that followed? I guess loads of technical problems didn't need to be fixed or even addressed remotely. Why is it that when some other company does this, it's perfectly fine (I'm looking at you, Microsoft), but when Sony does it, "oh no, break out the aluminum hats, the end is neigh!"

What game has Microsoft taken out large amounts of content so it would run on the Xbox?

If anything I've found it to be the opposite way around with games on the Xbox. It's always had far more content then all of the other platforms a game has been released on, especially with the ever expanding content over Live!
This actually includes games either ported from or to Windows.

This aside, you want a run-down of reasons why I (one of the few ACTUAL owners of the PS3 on this forum) don't like the console?

1. High-Definition Video. This was the main selling point of this console, as well as the 360. I was shocked and annoyed to know that a title I'd worked on for the 360 to take advantage of HD wouldn't even be able to run at the 1080p it had been designed for. This said the drop to 720p isn't that great so all-in-all the games still look absolutely amazing and only a small few (Kameo and Viva Pinata) show some frame jitter when running in these resolutions when the camera control is taken away from the player. For the 360 setting up HD was a breeze, plug-in wait a few seconds and bingo you're in HD. What's possibly more enjoyable is that I can switch between SD and HD with a flick of a switch while the machine is running, it automatically detects this and outputs correctly.

Unfortunately the same can NOT be said about the PS3. You change anything with the video settings then you HAVE to reboot the console. In order for HD to work it must not only be manually turned on, which requires you to first connect via an SD connection. Check to make sure you're TV will run Sony's HD settings (despite the TV I have running my 360 and PC at 1080p HD, the PS3 just gives me a blank screen for some reason) and repeat previous steps as required.
Oh and if only the problems stopped there, there are roughly 3 brands of HD Sound actually compatible with the PS3; so it's no surprise to find out that the 6 TVs I've tried it with, it has flat-out refused to support. What is possibly more annoying is unlike the 360, if you're using HD-Video you MUST use HD-Sound on the PS3. So basically I ended up having to connect my 5.1 Surround from my PC to my PS3 just to get sound output, round a few friends houses we've basically had to play without sound.

So, the first impression of the console just to get the bloody thing working was not grand to say the least.

Next came the games. After all this faffing about, getting the HD to work I wanted my games to run at the best possible resolution they could. Resistance did just that, it was nice.. I could see very crisply at 720p those amazing graphics of the consoles premier game. Only problem is that the textures really aren't designed for HD.. Sure from far way they look nice, but close up they're just very blurry basic colours more than anything. Kinda like Gears of War, when you press-X to skip a cut-scene and it takes a few moments for the high resolution models and textures to appear. Those few moments are exactly what resistance looked like.

Well after playing the game for about and hour with my mate it got put down. Not been played again since. It's not a bad game, just it isn't exactly a good game either. Totally bland really, only decent thing about it was the multiplayer; which the weapon balance is almost non-existant so there's definately a few weapons players will *always* use.

Next game I tried out was Ridge Racer. Hadn't played one of these since RR on the PSOne, so it didn't really need to impress me alot just a bit. Unfortunately I think Namco have been bitten by the "realism" bug with the game.. no more reverse 360 power-slides I loved to do in the original. Also no resolution past 720p, this we discovered on my mates TV that apparently supports more than mine. So that was a disappointment. The game looked quite nice, but it didn't exactly run as smooth as we had hoped it would.

2) Free Sony Playstation Network. This service is free for a reason... the reason being you need on HELL of a quick connection, the money you'd be paying for it breaks you. Now I've played it on a 2.5Mbit SDSL and 24Mbit Cable connection; on my lass' 2.5Mbit, lag was just ridiculous. Felt like playing on a 56k modem again.. on my 24Mbit line it finally began to feel like broadband gameplay.
What I don't understand though is my lass' connection generally gets lower ping (as it's limited from 100Mbit) and is an identical speed Up and Down. So all I can think of is the Sony server is sending you a crapload of data at once. In any case if you have "Slow" broadband I would recommend staying away from online play.
Something else that annoys me is the messaging system, people will send you things; things will finish downloading (oh yeah didn't I mention that it will continue to download anything even during online play, this includes the forced automatic updates), etc. Only you can't find out exactly what it is without dropping back to desktop. Very annoying. More so given no Mics work online yet, and rather than being able to type messages normally you have some retarded variation of T9-Mobile phone input system, with yup you've guessed it.. a built-in auto-complete word dictionary.

3) DVDs. Play them, watch them. Then realise that the only movies to get given the PureVideo treatment are those using BluRay. Normal DVD movies look pretty much like VHS tapes, even the PS2 did a better job. What is possibly more irritating is they've gone and bloody changed the control system for it all. Don't know who felt the SIXAXIS was a good idea but they should've been shot.

4) SIXAXIS. While we're on the subject, the motion control in the SIXAXIS was suppose to make up for the lack of DualShock. I think the only worth while examples of this are on the damn demo disc.
Carbon was the only game that used it in a way that made... some sense, even then it only reacts a little to give you that bit extra steering. On the whole, weighs the same as a DualShock and is identical in design. I wish to god I could plug my DualShock2 controller sometimes, just to feel something.
(for those wondering, I sold Carbon on eBay and bought the 360 version instead.. made $15 on it )

5) XMB.. It works on the PSP. Quite innovative and easy to navigate. This might be because the PSP doesn't have over 2,000 bloody options though!! On the PS3 it's just annoying and retarded.
You can be scrolling for a good 5minutes if you have alot on you're hard disk, you don't even notice when you pass what you wanted half the time.

6) It's FREAKING HUGE. Sure it'll silently hum away with the occassional click and whirr from the hard disk, but the console is just a truely phenominal size. I thought the 360 was quite large, only being slightly smaller than the original xbox. Nope aparently Sony not only believed that the PS3 should look as much like some 50s futuristic video player as possible but it should be about the only thing you can focus on in the living room while it blocks out the damn sun.

7) Playstation & Playstation 2 emulation. If you have it attached to HD, go through the performance of putting it in SD otherwise you get a stretched picture. Also in SD is slightly easier to miss those jaggies, lack of bilinear filtering, mipmapping, and a whole host of other cool things that you're PS2 happily does; but this monster aparently either is incapable of (after playing Ridge Racer it honestly had me seriously wondering if it could) or feels that even thinking about doing them is a waste on it's awesomeness.

No matter what the reason, older games just look worse than the console they were originally intended for.

When all was done, after about a week of use my PS3 is sitting lonely in a cupboard at my brother's place waiting for MGS4, Killzone2, or Final Fantasy XIII to be released. While I still have my trusty old PS2 Slim connected up.

Gameplay footage?, screenshots?...

The PS3 isn't even tangible for most of us yet, once I've played it I'll form my lopsided opinion - lopsided because if I considered buying one, my wallet would be dragging the ground .

I want the PS3 to do well, in fact I want all the next gen consoles to do well in different areas, PS3 for hardcore gamers, 360 for online gaming, Wii for casual gaming. There's plenty market out there to share, so they should just play nice and get on with it.

I refuse to choose, I'll flip flop, hell I'll buy all three (eventually), just as long as there's some games worth playing available for them.

Yes, and you still haven't told me what I'm "missing", being PS3-less. I've now played the PS3s at work quite a few times (mostly the MotorStorm demo)--- and I'll admit a bit of jealousy over that one. But I'm certainly not "missing" out by not having a game demo

eveyone needs to get over sony's slight exaggerations... PS3 may kick xbox 360 and wii's butt, to be honest i dont care... all 3 of the consoles rock except the 360, which is a stupid excuse for an expensive, uncapable computer that can only play certain games

playstation was made purely for the ultimate in gaming, and i have always loved playstations

this may sound strange but so what if they say they won an emmy when they didn't? its the product, in this case the console that you care about, not the people who made it because you aren't buying them

anyone who disagrees, once again i dont care... opinions are opinions

Technically yes--- visually I can't tell the difference. I had my 360 on 1080i for 3 months, then switched it to 720p and noticed no major differences. On 1080i the images seemed sharper, yet a little choppier during the full motion movement. The 720p seemed smoother, but not as sharp. I prefer 1080i so far, but maybe my LCD HDTV fills in every other line in a smart way.

360 outsold PS3 in January.

Anyone else notice how Matt's "predictions" (with which he is never wrong) actually just adjust to whatever happens. Wasn't the launch lineup supposed to be "everything Sony fans could have hoped for"?

Does anyone even give a crap about PS3 anymore? It is painfully obviously to anyone who has played both that it is technically identical to 360, and that 360 has far superior software.

Sony only won the last generation by 1) being first out of the gate 2) having the best exclusives.

Who does that sound like this round?

Right now, PS3 can play year-old 360 games at worse frame rates and with inferior textures... and Motorstorm.

You can't expect people to buy into that.

For our entertainment, Matt, please tell us what 360 owners are missing out on.

One thing PS3 had over 360 was 1080p (how big a thing did Sony make of that?!), but now the new NBA game on 360 can do 1080p.

---------------------

Edit:
I remember a Sony fanboy claiming that the Killzone trailer was never labelled as in game (I think it was Krilik).

Well I managed to find the video where Jack Tretton mysteriously refers to it as "definitely in game, definitely actual gameplay". Pretty vague, I'll admit, but I think he at least suggested it.

Actualy, the Dreamcast was out first, and when the ps2 came out in Japan, it was the cheapest DVD player on the market. It had a lot going for it, and it sold crazy fast, though nothing like the Wii.

Which game has microsoft ruined the way SWG was ruined? And why Matt, would you want to defend Sony for doing it?

I think the big nail in the Dreamcasts coffin was Rockstars not making GTA for it - I imagine GTA Vice City sold a LOT of PS2's .

What's more disappointing about that is actually most games only support 720p or 480p. Just more annoying that for all that cash and realistically right now all you're paying for is the Playstation label and BluRay.

BluRay is REALLY difficult to get ahold of here in the UK, and £10 more than HD-DVD. Not being funny but I thought movie prices were getting to expensive again anyways without paying the same price I pay for a game for one. Just not worth it.

There's more of each Blu-Ray Disc in my local HMV than I think there is players in the whole of the UK. I don't think a single one's been bought judging from the fact that the piles are all the same height. Haven't seen any HD-DVDs anywhere, though.

Dreamcast... when that first came out. It was such an amazing system. The graphics were so crisp, fresh, and clean. The only thing to compare them to at the time was N64 and PS1. The games looked so beautiful compared. I am really sad DreamCast didn't catch on. I don't really know why it didn't. The system was alot of fun. And for it's time graphically it blew everything out of the water.

I've seen both Blue Ray and HD-DVD disks in HMV, there wasn't much of them (about 3 disks per movie) and they didn't look like they were selling considering the players are more expensive then a Wii, 360 and PS3 put together.

Edit: Didn't jordan stories said he left. Oh well we can always hope.

So what, has your PS3 become a replacement for your penis or something? You know, screw playing fun games and everything, look at my big shiny PS3. It's better than a Wii because it's 'worth more' whatever that means in this context This is worse than those fools who show off their pricey cars

EDIT:
Quote: "But I definitely agree, the PS3 is an awesome console and the people who don't want one don't know what they're missing"

So, I have to pay for the privilege to find out what I'm actually missing? As in, you don't find out what is cool about the PS3 until you actually cough up the cash? No thanks mate, I'd rather preserve my cash, and buy a console which plays games, and is fun, rather than doing something else, which is apparently inexplicable. (That I'm 'missing' )

I agree with this statement. Do the people on my street need 30000 quid 4x4s? No. They have not a single fleck of mud on them. A 15000 quid small car would be better and cheaper to run, but they aren't a status symbol, are they?

First Jordan, do you even have a Wii to compare it to, from your statement I guess not. Go back to making threads about a game with two input statements as a WIP, there will be less flaming.

Why is it that everyone I know from outside this forum says they're bored to tears with their Wii because no good games are coming out for it, but then everyone seems to think the Wii is vastly superior somehow? Just a question

Quote: "Microsoft has never crippled a game that much as Sony did."

No, they did something much, much worse... they crippled operating systems, and more than one I should add. I haven't heard a single positive thing about Vista yet... everyone, and I do mean everyone, has said Vista is horrible, and I've asked repeatedly in various threads and amongst people I know to provide me with one (just one) thing that Vista does right, and no one has answered me yet... everyone just dodges that question. But it's okay when Microsoft screws up an entire Operating System... so long as Sony didn't do it, right?

But I guess I should name a game, so... Fable. Everyone I've ever talked to about Fable said they were ticked off for a few million reasons, because that game was launched without a number of the features it was supposed to have, and as I remember it, Peter Molyneux pointed at Microsoft for forcing him into cutting most of those features.

Quote: "oh no, but by matts standards, any company not sony has its issues magnified 10x!"

Actually, this is one of the silliest things I've ever read. On numerous occasions I've pointed out that Sony has done wrong, just like any other company does... no, you're absolutely wrong here. Actually, by the standards of 90% (+/-) of the people on TGC who talk about this subject, Sony's issues are ALWAYS magnified by 10x, even though they commit FAR LESS evil than a number of other companies. I get a lot of heat for being a Sony fanboy... but I'll gladly take it, it's far better to use bias to support something than to use bias to hate something.

Quote: "exactly what resistance looked like."

Now I know you're just making stuff up. Resistance is one of the prettiest games out right now, and I've yet to see anything that proves otherwise. Besides being tons of fun to play, it's simply gorgeous graphically, even close up. You must have a problem with your TV or something because that game is definitely hot, and you're the only person I've ever heard say otherwise.

Quote: "Free Sony Playstation Network. This service is free for a reason... the reason being you need on HELL of a quick connection, the money you'd be paying for it breaks you. Now I've played it on a 2.5Mbit SDSL and 24Mbit Cable connection; on my lass' 2.5Mbit, lag was just ridiculous. Felt like playing on a 56k modem again.. on my 24Mbit line it finally began to feel like broadband gameplay"

Again, you seem to have completely unique experiences that no one else in the world has. I've never, EVER heard anyone report large amounts of lag (in fact, everyone else in the world, with the exception of a few sony-haters, says the service is just as good as Live). Maybe you're getting lag because you want to see lag?

Oh, and yes, I've definitely seen lag on Live, at a friend's house over the past few months... but no more or less than I've seen on PSN.

Quote: "DVDs. Play them, watch them. Then realise that the only movies to get given the PureVideo treatment are those using BluRay. Normal DVD movies look pretty much like VHS tapes, even the PS2 did a better job."

lol okay, now I know you're having a laugh. the DVD's look like DVD's... if you can't see that then either (A) there's something wrong with your television, (B) there's something wrong with your eyes, or (C) you're looking for something that simply isn't there. We watched Band of Brothers the other night on a PS3, the first two episodes anyway, and it looked exactly how a DVD is supposed to look... nothing like the fuzziness or VHS.

Quote: "It is painfully obviously to anyone who has played both that it is technically identical to 360, and that 360 has far superior software."

Right... Over a year after it's been released.

Quote: "Sony only won the last generation by 1) being first out of the gate 2) having the best exclusives"

3) having thousands of titles through backwards compatability, 4) having a pre-existing fanbase of tens of millions of people (from the PS1, which had won the round before), 5) being the first major console to widely support online gameplay... I was going to go up to 10 but I don't want to make this post longer than it already is

Blu-Ray: Everyone seems to think Blu-Ray is losing, but some people disagree... something I thought some of you (well, those of you who are neutral, or are at least trying to be neutral) might be interested to read.

They look exactly like they did on the PS2, sorry but all that graphics "superiority" and somehow they look just as poor as they do on standard DVD players.

Every watched a DVD on the Xbox360? The picture is much more chrisp, and the options are easily accessible. Not being funny but I'd rather watch a film on my 360 than any other DVD player this includes on the PC unless it's using AVIVO or PureVideo.

The PS3 just doesn't add this feature.

You know maybe this is because I play online games A-LOT and have done for over a decade I notice lag more; seriously there is something wrong when my connection is based on data bandwidth over ping. This is what my personal experience has been.

Perhaps it's because the service is not currently in the UK yet, so I have to connect to the US server; still my experience so far has been very disappointing.

Sorry, but bull****. The textures are quite low resolution, it's like Killzone. Sure it looked great in it's own right, but never really held a candle to Halo graphically because of the texture resolution.

Your living in a dream world.

And what the hell was that Vista rant for?! That's like me ragging on Betamax. It has nothing to do with 360 and it is petty mud slinging on your part.

So we're still waiting for:
1. What we're missing out on
2. A game Microsoft ruined like SWG

How long are you going to keep up the "of course it has better games, it's been out a year more" line? You do realise that it will always be a year older, right?
