Interesting... very interesting. If you ask me the PS3 has 'potential'. Right now it just doesn't have anything justifying such a heft price tag. There's Virtua Fighter 5 - but that's coming soon to the 360. There's Resistance Fall of Man - the only good exclusive the system has right now. And MotorStorm - Evolution Studios better have made a lot of improvement over the demo, there was way too much slowdown and some visuals just killed what was otherwise a beautiful game, but regardless of the graphics the game-play felt like a toned down Excite Truck - which is pretty slim in terms of features as it is.

NeX, you've never heard of flOw before - obviously. It was originally made by some independent developers working off of a thesis, there is a free version available on the Internet that's been around for quite awhile, the game doesn't even play like Electro Plankton. Also, like Raven Said, the XMB just doesn't work as well for the Ps3 as it does for the PSP.

Also, on this 'screwing up the game topic', at least Peter Molyneux was man enough to apologize for letting people down. You'd think Sony could at least grow a pair and admit that they ruined the game.

I would really like to see the Ps3 to succeed but right now Sony is Sony's worst enemy.

=/

I must agree with Matt Rock in many respects and unlike many I have extensivel played and or have the wii, ps3 and 360.

1.) I have played resistance on a 1080p high def tv and the gameis gorgeous as I ownit I have played through thesingle player and I now play online and this game does more than gears of war which I have also played on the same tv.

first off grapically both are gorgeous games shaders on
everything, normal mapping the works. Yet gears of war is four-five hours long with a rather small arsenal and resistance is about 16 hours long I believe with about 20 weapons that all have alternate fire and do interesting things which keep the game fresh.

Second gears of war never displays as much action on screen as resistance delivers. Resistance has at least 30 fully physics enabled entites on screen at once at many points with particle systems, explosions, normal maps etc. Its simply not easy to say the same for gears of war. Not only this but resistance simply has more gameplay variety and mixed it up and made it fun to play through.

Lastly Id like to say that resistance physics are way better then gears. I mean for crying out loud I can shoot the pool balls on a pool table in part of the game and they move realistically. I can close cabinets, break crates , crack windows(really nice effect), ragdolls, and basically knock over any object in the game. Its really cool because it allows you to use the environment to do some pretty cool things. An example being there were like three enemys down the corridor and there were these explosive bomb thingy that I rolled and then shot it and cleared them all out. Another thing thats cool is that even after an enemy dies there ragdoll still reacts to any forces you apply its just so detailed if you think about it.

Quote: "Free Sony Playstation Network. This service is free for a reason... the reason being you need on HELL of a quick connection, the money you'd be paying for it breaks you. Now I've played it on a 2.5Mbit SDSL and 24Mbit Cable connection; on my lass' 2.5Mbit, lag was just ridiculous. Felt like playing on a 56k modem again.. on my 24Mbit line it finally began to feel like broadband gameplay""

Raven you must have some really bad experiences with any kind of electronic devices man or you just want there to be problems. Really I suggest you do your homework before you make such a uninformed post. Try playing resistance with 40 players on a huge map. Seriously Id like to see xbox do that o wait it can't support that many players. Not only that but on my standard 2.5mbits fiber optic line and a basic optimum internet connection there is virtually no lag unless yes another player is on a 56k modem, lol.

I could go on and on about this but i dont have the time right now,lol

I haven't heard a single positive thing about Vista yet... everyone, and I do mean everyone, has said Vista is horrible, and I've asked repeatedly in various threads and amongst people I know to provide me with one (just one) thing that Vista does right, and no one has answered me yet... everyone just dodges that question. But it's okay when Microsoft screws up an entire Operating System... so long as Sony didn't do it, right?"

I love Vista. It looks alot prettier, love the whole sidebar feature they have going on, love the fact that every version except home basic acts as a Media Center so I can play media files on my 360, it's fantastic.

Of course I don't try to play games on it, only online games, so I can't comment on that.

Quote: "Resistance is one of the prettiest games out right now, and I've yet to see anything that proves otherwise."

Honestly, I was disappointed with the graphics in Resistance. I literally played Call of Duty 3 on the PS3, then Resistance straight after to get a comparison--- COD3 blew it out of the water so to speak.

They're both next-gen games, I know, but Resistance is being touted as the flagship PS3 game, and if graphics are the PS3's strongpoints, it surely doesn't show it off in that one.

Quote: "in fact, everyone else in the world, with the exception of a few sony-haters, says the service is just as good as Live"

Looks like you take a shot at Raven for "making things up" then do so yourself. On the converse, I've never heard ONE person say the Sony service is just as good as Live. But let's say this is the case--- is that good enough? "Just as good as..."? For having such a long time to RND a system, shouldn't the Sony network be better? Myself, I'd rather pay a small amount for a reliable service, but to each his own.

Quote: "Oh, and yes, I've definitely seen lag on Live"

Lag is kind of a moot point, and I don't know why you or Raven are talking about it. Wouldn't it depend on the location and the network speed of the player lagging?

Quote: "Right... Over a year after it's been released."

Is that your main argument? The Wii was released a year after the 360 and it's less powerful--- so what's your point?

Quote: "being the first major console to widely support online gameplay..."

Is that true? The Dreamcast had online games, and the original Xbox had wide support of online gameplay when Xbox Live was released in Winter 2002.

Matt - You still haven't told us what we're missing by not owning PS3s at this minute. Like I said, the MotorStorm demo is awesome. Flow--- I could take it or leave it (after all, it's free on the web). Blu-Ray--- well, I don't see a need for HD video at the present time. Tell me what I'm missing!

Vista, for me, runs faster than xp and runs everything I need it to run without any trouble. There are a few problems with it like some annoying security popups, but it was not long ago everyone was saying XP was a pile of crap (some still are). XP to this day still annoys me with security pop ups so meh.

PS3 backwards compatibility isnt as great as it sounds apparently. Half of my mates games from the ps2 have no sound or corrupt video output and he can't play blue disks (not blueray) at all without kicking it for an hour. He did say it was quite handy for grilling burgers though.

I'll never buy another SOE product ever again after what they did to many online games. SWG was my favourite game until they completely butchered it, ignoring the thousands of players pleas not to go through with it, it was one of the most successful online games and it could have been the best. But its gone now, RIP star wars galaxies.

I'll get a ps3 if i can actually find some decent english games on it that I like, but at the moment theres only one and i dont feel like forking over £435 (£136 more expensive than everywhere ELSE in the world!) for one game and crap compatibility.

Some of the games on the 360 look really fun so may give that ago instead.

Ok. I'm going to say my last words regarding this thread.
I hate sony, and I'm quite sure I proved my point, and I have played the PS3.
Now, I don't think it's right to say "that console is crap", because the truth is no console is crap. And also because by saying such, you can "blow up" the bubble for someone, and I don't think that's fair.
If I buy a car made in Cuba or something, the last thing I wanna hear is "Cuban cars are crap". But, I can take comments like "Dude, even a sedan volkswagen from 1967 is better".
I never said PS3 is crap, but I sure think Xbox 360 is better. Why? because it has games I have enjoyed a lot. It's an easy to use machine, with a superb interface, and services like xbox live that are just awesome.
I think of the xbox 360 as the ultimate entertainment system; I can say I use it for nearly everything that involves entertainment, and that's why I love it.
I also have a Wii, I think it's fun, not great but fun at what it is.
I would like to know what kind of entertainment a PS3 provides. Maybe there's where this thread should've started.

Quote: "But I guess I should name a game, so... Fable. Everyone I've ever talked to about Fable said they were ticked off for a few million reasons, because that game was launched without a number of the features it was supposed to have, and as I remember it, Peter Molyneux pointed at Microsoft for forcing him into cutting most of those features."

Err, you realize this is true of almost all his games. I hope you're not saying Fable is a bad game though... given that it didn't reach the ridiculous expectations set for it, it is still an amazingly awesome game. With Peter Molyneux, you have to understand that he always shoots higher than he can reach, and what we get is sometimes an awesome game that still falls short of its impossibly high goal, or we get a dud. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. I'm still looking forward to Fable 2 a lot, but I doubt anyone really expects it to do even half of what Peter Molyneux has already told us it will.

As for Vista, I'll wait for service pack 1 (or maybe even 2) to switch. I've tried it (meaning that for a while I had a computer that used it), and found it very... cluttered. The graphical effects didn't do anything for me, and I didn't like how a pop up appeared almost every time I stopped moving the mouse. There were plenty of problems other than that, and it gave me an overall bad impression. But with a week of daily use, I could get over my issues with it, and I'd customize it so it didn't bother me so much. Once there are enough games I want that need x10, I guess I'll have to switch though.

But Microsoft making an os that falls below expectations is an aweful comarison to Sony screwing up SGW. A better comparison would be Microsoft making an amazing os, then totaly destroying it is service pack 1. More likely, Vista will become much better after its first service pack.

Sure, Gears of War has only a small amount of content.
5hours gameplay is about right, and Resistance has much more with over 12hours (that's how long it took me to complete it atleast) .. this said, I've only completed Resistance ONCE.
Gears of War I have gone back to time and time again. I must've completed it on my own and co-operatively a good 10-15x now. Honestly it still hasn't lost that shine either.

This said you can't really compare the two side by side.
Gears is a far more set peice game heavily story based, and while more content would've been nice; I've never actually once really stopped to think about the fact it only has around 8 weapons compared to the usual 20+ you get in most games nowadays.

Don't get me wrong I have my niggles with Gears, but honestly I've found it far more fun to play in both co-op and online. Probably because there is such a limited arsenal (and everyone online just seems to use shotguns exclusively.. which is odd), but also because it's far more close combat. You're not shooting at dots on the screen that resemble people, but up in their faces sticking grenades to their chests; slicing and dicing them, or just plainly beating them around. Sure you don't have the same numbers of people, but when was the last time you were playing Resistance and laughed really hard at the other team after slicing one up then getting shot up only to revive yourself, run round a corner and use a space laser to burn them alive as they emerge to try and kill you.

Hell in one match I was running after this one guy with the Hammer of Dawn until he made it into a building. Only to be smacked to the floor and head stomped into a bloody mess.

Just don't get that in Resistance.
This is what made Halo far more fun to play online that most other FPS as well, because it feels more friendly and comedic combat. You get some good memories and stories to tell about the games you've played with mates on/off-line with it; like the time we were playing on the map where you have an upper floor ring around a central area with a warthog in it. My mates thought they were safe on the upper floor cause they believed that the warthog would never fit on the men-only sized ramps up.. about 10 seconds later they're screaming abuse at me while I'm driving around that level trying to mow them down. I then ended up hunkering down in one of the rooms with the unlimited ammo turret pointed at the door. Took them some pretty funny attempts to kill me before they got a plasma grenade on it; only for me to jump off hide in the corner as they came in I stuck them and ran for it. More obscenities followed; but it's just that sort of fun gameplay that brings people back to certain games.

Only FPS that's ever been able to spark any sort of similar reaction for me on the Playstation 2 was Killzone. Me and my mate used to play on the snow or jungle map because on one you have a race to the rocket launcher.. the open-ness makes it ridiculous to take people on with the close range of most of that games weapons, and the jungle was so mental cause you could never find anyone until they'd killed you.

Resistance for me, had none of those qualities. It just felt like they were making an FPS just to show off the power of the PS3, which imo sacificed what could've been a good game. As far as I'm conserned it just turned out to be a pretty and decent game.. but nothing that the 360 couldn't do; so why would the console be worth the extra money for that horsepower that as of yet just hasn't been delivered?

I'm hoping that FFXIII, MGS4 and Killzone2 will do that; but we're still months away from releases so for now. PS3 is going to remain in it's box until something good turns up that I can't get on any other platform.

Because it will offer far more quantity and variety of games...

Once developers make the switch from PS2 to PS3 you'll start to notice the PS3 library grow substantially larger than the 360 and Wii.

Then it just comes down to what you want to play...

Care to suggest a date as to when the PS3's software library will become "substantially larger than the 360's"?

I think people use the shotgun in Gears because with timing, you can tear people to shreds with it - shoot at a close enough distance and they come apart.

I like to wait around a corner, watching them get closer, then when they get within blender range I nip out and blast them with the shotgun, instant kill as long as your <3m away or so. It takes so long to kill them with the machine gun that most people would only use it for ranged combat, or melee. I think that's what I enjoy about Gears, it's much more direct than other shooters, you play much more sneakily - yet tend not to camp, there's just a great balance I think. I mean most of the time, you find out there's a sniper before they can get you, it's not like some games where people find a sniper spot and spend the whole game there - there's always ways to flank or hide and stuff like that.

It's the boys birthday tommorow, thinking Dead Rising and Crackdown - should be a fun weekend .

Thats so sad about SWG! I was going to get that, but I don't think I want it now!
They took so much out of it! Does any other game caome close to what it used to be? I've heard World of Warcraft is the biggest MMORPG but does it have the realism that SWG had?

That sounded like a game I have been looking for for a while and now it's gone!
Darn!

Sony just announced that European PS3s will have inferior backwards compatibility.

Basically, to reduce costs, they took the PS2 chip out of it and everything just runs on software emulation.

Well at least they're passing the savings onto the consumers...

Oh wait.

I mean I guess it's fair, we get an inferior version of the console, but at least we have to pay more for it. . And at least they waited until they had all their preorders in the bag before they announced it.

Oh Sony, now your just spoiling us.

That's complete and utter crap. Most of the non-delivered things in Fable were due to technical/performance constraints, and time constraints.

He never 'pointed the finger at Microsoft' at all, and in fact apologised and blamed most of the issues on himself/his very high targets (as Bizar Guy pointed out)

Maybe it's just me, but this: http://allboards.lionhead.com/showthread.php?t=83152 does not look like 'pointing the finger'

á la Sony:

Quote: "The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles."

"Limited"?!
Ouch...

----------------------------------------

I just realised - how long ago must they have made this decision?? I mean, they've been producing these broken Euro PS3s for quite a long time...

Quite simply the most disgusting thing I've seen a company do for ages. I mean, it is borderline fraud. They sold preorders on the misconception that it would play 98% of Playstation games, while they were producing the bloody BC incapable boxes!

They haven't even released the list of compatible games FFS. 360's BC may be shocking, but at least MS had the decency to print the limited list of games that would run before it launched.

This is basically just telling EU customers to import. Oh wait, Sony destroyed Lik-Sang. Suddenly that makes a whole lot more sense.

IMO Fable was one of the best executed RPG's I've seen in years, really only Oblivion offered more sandbox gaming. It's disapointing to not have at least a couple of those amazing features he had planned, because Fable is left as a kinda conceivable product now - like any company could do it, maybe not in that style but there's no real 'magic' - it's just a great RPG.

I'd say that Black and White was more hyped and overated than Fable though. I mean Mr.Molyneux claimed that your creature could do all sorts of things, practically everything, from getting jealous and being spiteful to getting teenage girls pregnant. I'd like to see what would happen if he was locked up and forced to make a game exactly as he first envisions it (before publishers, coders, and reality take a bite). We don't need to be bowled over with effects and graphics, it'd just be cool to have a wild and unusual PC game for once.

I was disappointed with Fable. Like many RPGs, I felt it started brilliantly but lost direction as in went on...

Jade Empire and KOTOR were far superior IMO.

the PS3 is a rip off. It's like someone ripped the hair off a Gorilla's armpits and boxed it, calling it a console. And who came up with the name "PS3" anyways? It's like they just thought, "PS2+1=PS3" which is NOT true, if you treat PS as a variable.

I just don't see the difference in DVD quality. And in terms of online, I can't find a single PS3 and 360 owner who says either is better or worse. Admittedly, PSN is only "just" as good as 360; I haven't heard anyone say it's better. But the only people I've ever heard say Live is better than PSN are either (a) people on TGC, or (b) people who haven't even tried using PSN. They have pretty much the exact same features across the board, and to say Live is better because it was first (that's what I'm assuming people are basing this on) is... well... silly.

Quote: "You know maybe this is because I play online games A-LOT and have done for over a decade I notice lag more"

I've been playing games online for just as long as you have... but I think you're right about being connected from the UK, that would definitely create lag on any network.

And what anti-Sony comments have been made that weren't equally petty? I just think it's ironic is all... everyone gets hot and bothered over the minute goof-ups that Sony makes, but when M$ or some other company drops the ball, everyone is quick to their defense. I could name at least one or two games from EA, Ubi, Konami... okay, you name a studio, and I'll name at least one or two games they dropped features from and ticked off their fanbase by releasing the way they did. Why is it okay for those studios to do it, but when Sony does it, it makes them evil? Humor me .

Quote: "How long are you going to keep up the "of course it has better games, it's been out a year more" line? You do realise that it will always be a year older, right?"

Whenever I read a developer interview about the PS3, they say two things about it... it's hard to develop on at first, and was made difficult by the launch cycle (which is where most developers got to saying "it's hard to develop on," mostly because of a lack of hardware), but it has endless possibilities/ capabilities, and given some time, they'll be cranking out gorgeous games left and right. I thought that was painstakingly obvious, but somehow I keep repeating myself whenever this topic comes up .

Eh, these conversations are never going to change... I still love you guys in the end . But good grief, most of you hate the PS3 ONLY because Sony created it, which is unbelievably silly. I just don't understand how some of you can't acknowledge that it's a great console and it's going to have an amazing future... it simply escapes me. But like I told Bizar, if I'm wrong in November '07 with my predictions, I'll gladly admit defeat . But then if I'm right...

I feel like you don't read any of the posts people make. They have opinions BESIDES just hating Sony as to why they don't like the PS3.

I'm sorry, but most of the people who spend their time bashing Sony don't really have a logical reason behind it. I did say "most" there, not "all." Put "Sony" into the "Thread Subject Search" bar at the bottom of this screen and see what happens . I've been defending Sony (usually by myself, until recently anyway) for what feels like an eternity. This debate will never change, although it seems like lately more and more people are defending Sony. Slowly but surely .

I'm sorry you don't seemed to have noticed that SONY JUST TOOK BACKWARDS COMPATIBITY OUT OF THE EU PS3.

HOW can you defend that?!?

We pay more, for less.
Sony were building PS3s that they knew would not play most PS2 games, WHILE THEY WERE CLAIMING 100% COMPATIBILITY.

I mean FFS - come ON.

Quote: "I can't find a single PS3 and 360 owner who says either is better or worse. Admittedly, PSN is only "just" as good as 360; I haven't heard anyone say it's better."

Do you want me to fetch the quote where you blatantly claimed the opposite, or are you admitting you were lying on that occasion?

And as for your predictions, they constantly change. You thought 360 would outsell PS3 in Jan 07 did you? You thought that, with both systems out and in good supply, 360 would still be pulling away?

And as for every developer interview saying PS3 has far more potential... WHAT?!

Find me three - hell - one that isn't from Sony.

You might want to stay away from Gabe Newell's where he says its a piece of crap that Sony should scrap, apologise for and start over.

But of course you know more about nextgen game development than him.

I'm afraid to say that you can continue your 360 kicks PS3 and vice versa debate, but THE WII WILL TAKE OVER!!!

I mean think of it soon game will be rolling out quicker then you could say "Wii"! I mean Nintendo have all the icons behind their company so we'll be getting tons of games!

No they didn't. They switched to software emulation, the original plan from the beginning. The only reason why they shipped PS3s with PS2 hardware is because the PS2 emulation software wasn't good enough to emulate PS2 games yet. You can read articles from before the US launch that state Sony was going to lower costs of the PS3 by removing the PS2 hardware once the software emulation works better.

Patches can fix a lot of games that might not work. And if not, you'll have to keep your PS2, like you did with your Xbox for those that don't... So whatever. Complain about nothing.

Gabe Newell also worked for Microsoft for 13 years.

And I think Valve should apologize for starting the cliche monstrosity of every FPSer starting out with an in-game story sequence that takes 10 minutes before you even actually start playing the game.

I'm sorry, the EU PS3 does not have 100% BC, yet Sony claimed it did - WHILE THEY WERE MAKING IT.

They should never have claimed 100% BC at all if they new they were going to pull it back to "a limited number of PS2 titles".

Why do you defend their lies?!

100% BC was a lie, Killzone realtime was a lie - and yet you defend both, WHY?

Why have a brain aneurism over it ? Surely you're not suggesting that Sony are the only company employing a team of 'spin doctors' in this industry ?

They certainly are dishing out the most and biggest lies at the moment. There is nothing to justify the PS3. Congratulations Sony!

Actually, most of us are 'bashing' your lacklustre, substance-less arguments, not Sony. Try talking sense and using facts, rather than meaningless generalisations, and perhaps the apparent 'bashing' will disappear...

Because I'm not spoiled and don't care if something I don't need doesn't have all the pointless features I just can't live without, like you.

Seriously, its the lamest thing anyone could be upset about.

I like how you claim they took backward's compatibility out, and then the post afterward correct yourself by saying its not 100%. BTW before the PS3 launched the BC was claimed to be around 98%.

You know lolz people probably say it sucks because they can't afford it just think of the following

Your in a room with $20 and all three systems (PS3, 360 and Wii) are all $10 you have enough money to buy a game and a system

Which do you chose?

The Wii is old GameCube technology, apart from the novel joypad both XBox 360 and PS3 kick its arse in the graphics and physics department.

My predictions for the future are..

Wii, continues to sell to kids and old ladies, Nintendo make a proffit on old technology... like usual (remmber the black and white Game Boy vs the colour hand helds like Atari Lynx and Sega Game gear? Both Atari and Sega are dead now.)

XBox, Bill gates will match the price of the Wii to spoil sales. He's the richest man in the world, he don't care if he loses money on it.

PS3, It too expensive, and too ahead of its time. I recon it will not make a proffit and probably cripple Sony. Sony go into liquidation. (remember the Atari Jaguar? 64bits of power in 1993, ahead of its time, too expensive to make and it finaly did in Atari)
