Not had opportunity to do any 3D for a couple of weeks and tried finishing up today. Not happy with how the higher poly version turned out, so I'll take that as polygon flow practice and decided I'd try my hand at UV Mapping the lower poly model and after a few failed attempts, got something that works and is free from issues. This is what I have so far, after a couple of terrible texturing attempts too. Did the modelling in Silo 2 and the UV Mapping and texturing in Modo. Not amazing, but a start. I'll follow this chick off so I have my workflow, then do some actual Modo tutorials instead of just figuring everything out, as Modo may have some useful stuff I am not aware of.

[edit]
Did some more, actually, she's not looking that bad, I'll rework the face and will have to do the hair and shoes still. But once finished, she could be passable. Only annoyance I have found with Modo's texturing is that my PC's performance with Modo is a bit lackluster

She doesn't look bad in Unity either...just the face...

Also, I think my mid-poly head actually works better with this. I think I'll texture this instead and maybe have a passable model then.

I am not too disappointed as somebody who hasn't done this for years.

That's pretty nice Seppuku. I'm sure if I tried I could manage something similar, I've just never properly tried to model and texture something. I mean I can draw, so I guess with enough time I could manage 3D modelling. Maybe one day I'll try

Isn't UV mapping a total PITA though?

Not too bad, Sepp! The head, fingers and toes are usually the hardest for an artist to draw, and I guess you could say the same for a 3D artist.

Quote: "Isn't UV mapping a total PITA though?"

Yeps...at least at first. It stays boring and tedious though, lol. But, it gets easier/better and less time consuming after a couple of years .
A good program also makes the job easier. 3DCoat has excellent (re)topology and uv/mapping tools for example.

Here's some of my latest work...new hair for the main character Alissa for my game project 'Crystals Of Theia', and a custom road mesh/texture.

Cheers, UVMapping isn't so bad once you know the trick to doing them. My preferred method is using tools that allow me to mark the seams, pick an axis and unwrap. When done right, you can avoid overlap first time, if you do get overlapping polygons, you can always fiddle and adjust, much like fiddling and adjusting in 3D modelling.

As for 3D Coat, I tried the trial once and I thought it was a beautiful tool to work with. The only video tutorial I've ever done was for the 3DCoat trial doing UVMapping for the method I've just described, I had intended to do more, but in my usual "oooh butterfly" way, I didn't. And...I published that video in 2008 :S Hence the poor video quality, but amazing it has been that long.

Also, another hobby I'd just got back into as well, is playing the guitar, which is something I've probably not done for...15 years. :S I only played as a kid & early teens. I picked up Rocksmith 2014 for my PC and my dad has kindly lent me one of his numerous guitars, his Bernie Marsden PRS Special Edition and I think it's starting to come back to me, two chords and a part of a Cream's Sunshine of your Love. Part of the motivation was "I need music for my games - I have a couple of tools...I can only somewhat play 1 instrument, maybe I can make this work", plus Rocksmith has always been a game to intrigue me and so far, not disappointed by it.

Lol, speaking of guitars, it's been several months since I last played as well. Well, I did play a couple of months ago on my Ibanez, but without any FX, and not plugged in on any device. Haven't yet installed all my music tools yet, which is the reason why.

I would really love to drum again, but it's kinda hard because of the noise, especially because I'd love an acoustic drumkit.

Quote: "Even after all these years, hair is still one of the most difficult things for me to model."

Practice, practice, practice... . It's the first time I model hair as a mesh like on that image. Usually, I used planes. Using strands in zbrush is also great for hair brushing/modeling.

I've been staring at the terminal thinking of something to wright, Donkey Kong is easier in an arcade setting with a joy stick, playing it in a flash appellate with a keyboard it's unlikely you'll even get the hammer.

Here are two images of vehicles. Both are 3D models, done in blender! The guy who modelled them is interested to join my team!

strangest damn thing...

I modified some files on a USB drive on my home PC last night.

I modified those same files on the same USB drive on my work PC today.

I plugged the USB drive back into my home PC tonight.

All of the modification from the work PC today are gone. the entire drive appears to have reverted back to the state it was in when I logged off of the home PC last night. The last modified dates are all last night, and the content from today is gone.

I always work from this USB drive across both machines and have never encountered something like this before.

very frustrating.

This thread seems to lack presence these days. So I figure I would express the confusion, yet awesomeness I experienced at this year's Wacken, a festival of pure metal, the world's biggest metal festival, playing some of the world's biggest and best metal bands out there, even catering to the more obscure subgenres, a festival that picked The Status Quo as a headline act. Who walked on stage saying "I am sure you're wondering where we're here, so are we."

But not a bad choice, it was awesome and look at the crowd they drew.

Oh and Nazarus has been announced for next year. Can't wait.

Speaking of metal...Judas Priest and Morbid Angel both have a new album! \m/
I've heard only one song so far from the new Morbid, and hm...perhaps not their best stuff, but darn...they're back! And, I've also heard a few parts from a new Judas Priest song...darn...the metalgods still rule!

You know.... I think it's time to bring back the A: and B: drives!

I mean, who the heck has a floppy drive anymore, much less 2? Those little letters have been out in the cold a long time now.

My first computer didn't even have a hard disk / C:

It booted from a 3 1/2" floppy in A: and had a secondary 5 1/4" B:

A is for A A Apple, B is for B B Backup

And I remember...POINTS!

On a sidenote...geeeeeeezes...the new Judas Priest album is going to be stellar!! From what I've heard so far (teasers), it'll be as good as Painkiller! At least, that's my opinion. Sad that Glenn suffers from Parkinsons disease, though!

I may look at my current C# alternatives and compare as I haven't done in quite some time, though I may lose the convenience of ReSharper, but Visual Studio 2017 is the one to behave, as 2015 didn't play ball.

In good news, I handed my notice at work, turning up my 5 year customer service job and got myself a programming job.

I had a listen, it is a really good album.

Also, I figure this may interest you. I know Rob Halford has toyed with the idea for quite a while, but looks like he may actually be doing it:
http://teamrock.com/news/2018-03-15/rob-halford-open-to-black-metal-project-with-behemoths-nergal

It looks like confirmed with Behemoth's Nergal and he is always reaching out to Ihsahn. But if he gets both bands on board for a collaberation, I will be so happy. Emperor is my favourite black metal band, with Behemoth coming in very closely behind (or blackened death metal for Behemoth if needing to be more precise ). I hope they pull it off.

And I'll be seeing Behemoth again this year...and Judas Priest.

Yes indeed! It's a great album! Not a single bad song on that album, imo. \m/

And yeah, read it a couple of weeks ago. Would be so cool! I really hope they pull it off as well! Fingers crossed, mate!

Well, I guess as it has been a while, what's new party people?

I quit my job of 5 years for a programming job. After 13 years of being on here, a coding site, I'm a bit slow on the uptake But I started applying this year and found I managed to snag one, where I've been for 2 weeks now.

I also bought myself a Nintendo Switch, which was a very good decision I felt. Breath of the Wild is amazing and it is actually a really good console.

Nice to know you've finally found a programming job, Sepp! Congrats! Have you enjoyed the new metalreleases? Saxon, Judas Priest, Pestilence, Akercocke, Morbid Angel, Dimmu Borgir, Ihsahn, etc...?

My 8 teammembers and I are still working hard on Crystals Of Theia. Aiming for a demo release this year.

Blah, missed some of those. But the Judas Priest one was freaking sweet. I'll catch up with the rest. I also listened to the new Dead Daisies album, which was pretty good, which also led me into listening to some Winery Dogs too lately. I saw Dead Daisies over a year ago with my family, they were really good, though my dad stood next to a guy who looked bored, so the bass player kept trying all sorts of tricks to get this miserable sod moving, so he got off stage and kinda joined the crowd and got close to the guy, who still was unmoved.

You might like them if you've not listened to them:

Quote: "Nice to know you've finally found a programming job, Sepp! Congrats! "

Thanks man. It isn't a set up I expected for going into a programming role, they still support software they developed 30 years ago for an operating system that came out in the 60's, kudos to them. But they've hired me as a hybrid, so I'll be working on the shiny new stuff as well as the stuff older than me.

Quote: "

Freaking sweet. Well let us know when you do. I'll have a play through.

I've also now committed myself to bit of game dev again, now that my learning web dev and various bits and pieces has paid off, I can focus on using that time for game dev. So I have picked up a project I was working on again. I had done experiments across 3 sets of tools and am gonna settle on Unity for it.

Screenshots below. The desert I already had done before, but I added some stuff for the green area. It's going to be based around a single town, with a couple of wilderness areas around it. I aim to have 2 main characters, 10 townspeople, 4 hero characters, a villain and about 10 variations of monster types. At least, something I expect to be manageable to model out, I've subbed up to Modo Indie so I can use 3D tools I get along with.

The characters will be placeholders there. Other stuff, I paid for, so gonna use them.
