Yes, that last one was a good idea, but the punchline falls far from the mark. It felt like one of those fill in the blank comics, and you couldn't think of a way to make the idea funnier. I think it would have been a lot better with no text bubble at all.

You really have to make a point if you want to make a religious joke. Else it really isn't funny.

Usually, I'd agree, but I didn't want to touch on religious issues or debate, I just wanted it to be funny. I could go on about religion for hours, but my rants are best left out of 1-panel comics.

Well then why wste your time on a comic that makes no sense, doesn't make a point, and is not funny?

If you're trying to make nonsensical comics in the hope that someone will laugh, maybe you need to watch some comedians that have that style. First one that comes to my mind:

When I was a young boy, I remember my grandfather asking me "How old are you?"
I said "Five."
He said "When I was your age I was six."
Then he cackled madly and threw a spoon at the window. He was an odd man.

Yah, that last comic made absolutely no sense. Randomness can be funny (see the Steven Wright quote above), but the Jesus comic was--- not funny and made no sense. Are you making fun of McDonalds, or Jesus? Why is he not hungry? Is it supposed to be funny because McDonalds wasn't around back then? Please point me to the humour.

No sense... I seriously didnt get it at all.

I'd be like me saying -
"I'm hungry for a hamburger"
and then somebody saying
"You racist!".

If that made no sense than you should know what I mean.

i get the joke. One of his disciples ask if jesus wants a macdonald's but he doesn't and his disciples are scared of him so he agrees with everything he says, hence "i was only joking!". it's not that funny - but i get where the humor is meant to be.

As it says, xbox LIVE suffered from numerous problems for a while until recently. They gave undertow away for free as a goodwill gift. The joke is that he can't play the best online arcade game online bcause LIVE is still crap. (For the record, they cleaned up their act.)

XBOX Live was having connection trouble in December and January. Don't you read Untitled, Bizar Guy? That hurt my feelings!

'Course I do! I just don't read every single article. I never do in magazines. I read most of them though.

I still don't really find it funny. In this case the visuals were put together is a weird fashion. I think it could have been good if the visuals had enforced how ridiculous the ending was supposed to be.

It doesn't make sense. When they gave away Undertow (the crap game), the Live service was already repaired.

Avoided posting in here for a while, but here it is:

First of all, you need to stop making excuses as to why your comics are not funny. You can begin by not getting defensive when people criticize your stuff. When I posted designs people didn't like, I tried to take it humbly, as opposed to convincing people to re-look at my artwork and see it in a good way.

I like your "flamers and fourmers" comment. So whoever doesn't like your work goes into the first category?

No body is border lining on verbal abuse. You are getting constructive criticism. If we were verbally abusing you, we'd photoshop images of animal poop into your comics and then make dirty innuendo jokes about your forum name. Instead people are telling you why the jokes aren't coming through, and how to make progress.

Quote: "I'm still finding the balance between clever humour and an easy understanding of the joke. I do know how to do clever jokes, I'm just finding the best way to apply them to a 1-panel comic, as I'm used to doing 15-page issues."

This is the only good punchline you wrote. If you cannot make a joke funny in a 3-panel comic, how on mother earth are you gonna make it funny spread out into a 15-page issue?

The issue here isn't the fact that you're not transferring your funny/clever joke into your comic panel, it's the fact that you don't have a funny/clever joke to begin with. There is no underlining message in your jokes, other than the obvious. Yes, people know Xbox live is slow. HAHA. Yes.

Keep improving on your artwork, and remember that a good sense of humour is developed as you grow. I genuinely wish you luck.

And for that I thank you.

Although if you'd been paying attention, you'll realise that those last few posts weren't being defensive.

Quote: "As it says, xbox LIVE suffered from numerous problems for a while until recently. They gave undertow away for free as a goodwill gift. The joke is that he can't play the best online arcade game online bcause LIVE is still crap. (For the record, they cleaned up their act.)"

Defensive? I think not. He didn't quite understand it, so I explained it.

Quote: "Yeah, but for the sake of punchlines, surely you can look the other way on that one."
Merely saying that the joke isn't 100% accurate. Or whatever.

(BTW, I'm aware of the irony that I'm being defensive now in order to get stuff off my chest.) I know I've been defensive before, but only when people either say it's crap with no further insight or jsutification, or if I genuinely believe their comment was disagreeable. Although I have been too defensive at times and for that, I'm sorry. But not any more.

Moving on...

Quote: "
I like your "flamers and fourmers" comment. So whoever doesn't like your work goes into the first category? "
No. No. And no. People have said they don't find my comic funny and I have nothing but respect for them. But it crosses the line with comments like: "Go die in a fire, you stupid bastard!" I have no tolerance for people like that, yet if someone says: "I don't find it funny and the artwork is crap," then I accept that. I have to have faith in my own work, hence the 'defensive' comments, but beneath it all I accept that as their opinion. After all, this is a learning experience for me.

Quote: "No body is border lining on verbal abuse. You are getting constructive criticism. Instead people are telling you why the jokes aren't coming through, and how to make progress."

I believe that's in reference to one forumer's comment at another. Not me. Maybe the guy was joking. But at the time, it seemed as if the person was delbierately putting the other guy down for liking the comic.

Very well put Aikicat. To make a joke, you need to find something that IS funny, an antic you can play with or something ironic and skillfully tell the joke.

Victoria Beckham getting liposuction amused me when I read it in the news - this would be good material for satire. Xbox live going down and being crap isn't. Your life guard was funny, because it's playing on an ironic twist, it's his job to save her, yet he does the complete opposite.

I was specific with my criticism, and you got defensive and said I was bordering on verbal abuse. I stopped offering feedback on your comics because doing so is pointless. You seem to feel that your readers not getting the nonexistent joke and not enjoying your comics is their fault and you continue to make comics and ignore the advice given to you by everyone in this thread. If you want to improve then accept the criticisms. If you don't want to improve then keep doing what you're doing.

Aikicat's comments were right on, I should have just quoted everything he said and saved myself the 30 seconds of typing that I gave from my life.

Snapping secret photos of me again, BiggAdd?

@Cash Curtis:

It wasn't your critisism of my comic that I found offensive (else you'd have every right to slap me) It was this:

Quote: "If he's been eating bird crap then I really hate to know what you've been eating that made you so cranky. "
Your mom."

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but publicly stating you eat someones mum is generally not a good idea. THAT was my justification for "borderline verbal abuse." Oh, and I do accept critisisms. I may not always like being told it's crap, but I do learn from it and I value that, and I value whatever critisisms and/or suggestions you throw my way.

Has that cleared things up?

Man... I need to my facts straight... Kinda ruins the humor. Pay attention to the first comic.

I got confused because some of Van's post don't have it and some of them do. Anyway... I'm going to stop talking now *recieves fail for today*
