Quote: "Get ready for the next Big Bang this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Maxis today announced that Spore™, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims™, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7. Spore will be available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS™, and mobile phones.

"The wait is almost over," said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."
"

Yay, Mac version - since I'm hopefully getting a Mac in the summer after exams etc. so that will be perfect for the new school year - an iMac and Spore to go with it

I'm excited, even though it was originally supposed to come out that time last year...annoying how much they delay all the good games .

This is the only game I've ever read about that I've actually been anticipating the release of.

Can't wait... and if my current box needs heart surgery to be able to play it then that's what it will get.

That is, as long as it doesn't come as a Vista-only game...

(Not seen that stated anywhere so fingers crossed).

if you search on Gametrailers.com in the user videos there is a 35 min demonstration

MY GOD! at first I thought it was just some kiddy game, but the amount this game offers is amazing! lol you even get up to a stage where you can battle on your planet for world domination heh then port out into the galaxy to find new life, meet new races on the other side of the galaxy....fight them if you want....create a whole new planet...lol there is so much detail I am genuinely baffled.

I can't wait to play this game, I know the game will keep me going for ages by itself but I hope they include some multiplayer features, even if its just selectively downloading your friends planet and checking it out.

One feature I thought was really cool was that other player's worlds could be populated by the creatures that you evolve in your game and vice-versa.

Nice.

Awww, I thought it would be out around March, dunno where I got that from but it's just another game that's taking far too long to arrive (DukeNukem,RE5,Fallout2).

Hurry up Spore, and if you suck I will break your freakin neck, it's months and months away yet still the next game I'm looking forward to.

Awesome.

But I dont get it, they're releasing it for the DS and mobile phones, but not for any consoles (you'd think the Wii at least since they're already collaborating with Nintendo).

I was suprised that none of my friends had heard about spore when I showed them some vids today, still almost all of them are gamers.
They may just have been sucked down too deep into the fps swamp.
Anyway, They were impressed.

I read somewhere that it would take 72 years to explore the whole spore universe, could it really be true?

That's not true, I think. The whole thing is procedurally generated and the seeds are definitely endless as other players data is exchanged with yours. Like with Infinity and similar games, there is no set end to the universe.

Actually Spore creates a galaxy for you, meaning it's not infinite. While there are infinite resources available, your galaxy will be limited (which in terms of galaxies is quite a vague word).

Everythings procedural, so it'll be different with each game, it could be 72 years if everyone in the world had their own galaxy and you needed to visit every single one.

I'm sure Spore couldn't fit on a phone. What you are thinking of is probobly a separate version (like the far cry for the wii, etc.).

Lots of new screenshots at spore.com!
Edit: and even more screenies at ign.

Edit again: I think the first phase of spore looks a lot like flOw(gameplay wise).

i played flOw once and thought the same thing. as for the new release date, i thought it was going to be April!!!!!

Ah well.

Till then im going to work on my own procedural game:

Universe

In it, the procedural-ness goes one step further as you spawn elemnts and combine them to make compunds that you can use to "earn" more elements(you start with only hydrodgen and helium) which you can use to earn more elemts, ect... much like the real universe evolved. Eventually you will be able to make planets, then (this part will be hard because it processes each particle individually) life. And the whole time you can spawn more particles at will if you have earned their elements. Also you can spawn energy in various forms.

I found a link to this movie about the creator tools in Spore. What you can do with the tools are far more impressive then what I saw last time.

What I like about Will Wright is that he seems to pull through on all the hype while Peter Molyneux doesn't The latest footage and videos actually goes beyond what I had in mind last year.

Even if the built-in modeler won´t be as advanced as a professional modeler, it would be really cool if, as you wrote, someone made a converter so that you could make a base shape in spore and then continue the modeling in another modeler!

I would bet my life's savings that the game won't suck beyond belief . 1) We are talking about Will Wright, 2) We've already seen them play the game, it looks amazing and it's months before it's release still, 3) It's so incredibly innovative and filled with ub3r l33t awesomeness that there is no way it will suck beyond belief .

1) The guy behind the Sims... Which I didn't like.
2) Yeah, but how long will it remain entertaining? I think it could get boring pretty fast after conquering some planets.
3) But how much fun will it be?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it WILL suck, I say it COULD suck. And seeing the game isn't there, I think thats the best judgement I can make.

1) It's still regarded as one of the best games ever made, regardless of whether you like it or not .
2) Just by looking at them play it, I know I could keep myself entertained for weeks with it .
3) Very.

Well, seeing as it's not out yet, that is definitely not true. I think Spore is over-hyped, and can only disappoint. It will still be a kick-butt game but people's expectations for it are so over the top, it can only be worse than what they imagine.

I disagree, Zotoaster. I can't see Spore being fun after conquering a few planets. The same as with the Sims, which got boring pretty fast as well. Will Wright knows how to sell a game and come up with innovative stuff, but I can't see the fun-factor of Spore extending pretty long.

Will Wright knows what he's doing, eh? You mean SimEarth, SimAnts, SimCopter? Against that are SimCity, The Sims and hopefully Spore. That's a 50:50 ratio.
