Silly tha_rami. *Obviously* you don't "get" the game because you're stating that it won't be revolutionary and be the best game ever made The game will obviously be the epitome of fun and every human being will be a fan.

Yeah thrilling, so thrilling in fact when it's in the bargain bin at my local Kmart for $4.99 I might pick myself up a copy.

Haha. That's just what I do. I picked up a copy of GR:AW for $10 the other day.

cool, a double page each I think is fair
pros and cons

Quote: "b) the whole thing is gimmicky or feels that way, and becomes a hit."

I don't see how it could be gimmicky when all the content is user-created. The thing I'm concerned about is whether the gameplay will have the same flexibility.
It would be awesome if the game evolved with the player almost so two people's games were unrecognisable to each other. Maybe that's the next revolution
Having to make everything might get tiring but I don't think this is a hardcore game, just for relaxing now and then.

Huzzzaaaaah!!! *Grabs zzz, and throws him up... right into the Sun*

I really can't wait 'till this is released, although I bet it will suck a smidgen, as I have very high hopes for it.
But hopefully it exceeds my expectations.

(Sorry for throwing you into the sun zzz)

Why not? If I could create my own creature but they all basically play the same but look different, it would be gimmicky. All creatures seem to behave the same and follow the same path into space. They just dance, walk and attack different. I'm afraid (not saying, just afraid) that the whole thing until the RTS element is like a simple RPG but instead of upping stats through a menu, you're upping them through limbs.

The creature development phase is like an RPG where you increase stats such as attack and social. Don't know how complicated these stats are, like increasing hitpoints or speed have not been announced AFAIK. There seems to be hundreds of parts to chose from when creating a creature though, and all can be scaled and perhaps other options as well (number of talons etc).

So basically, I'm correct? That'd be a disappointment. All I'm fearing for is that it's just a bunch of cool tricks laid over several levels of rather standard gameplay. I hope I'm wrong, though!

It'll be one of those oblivion with dungeon be gone things, fun to start again with little consequence.

Please everyone stop stating things you don't know aren't true as facts.

...The Creature phase is like being a creature and trying to survive until you get to the next generation and spend evolution points. You also do a lot of interacting with your own species and others. All species do NOT play the same, at least from what's been shown. The similarities seem to be that all species last least once you get large enough are bisexual, have to eat, though that depends on what your species eats, how aggressive they are, and so on. I'm bacing what I say off the vids, and it seems like different species play like how different species do in real life, like it's based off that. It's stated in the vids that how your species acts as a whole (like goofyness and aggressiveness), is all done in the tribal phase. Theoretically, you might not have to make your species learn how to dance. And if you're going to compare the species phase like an rpg, you might think of it as the most advances leveling up system ever created, with a full dynamic world to explore, or so it seems. Personally, I seem nothing gimmicky about it.

@Dared1111, I have knbow idea what you just said, and seeing as you haven't played the game, it might not be like that.

People are getting Star Wars Episode 1-itis over this game, whereas it can only cause disappointment. I'm sure it will be a fun game, but the plateau of expectation is so high one can only logically say that it can and won't live up to it.

I agree with Bizar Guy and I think that Rami has thoroughly convinced himself that he will not like the game based on things that he is only pessimistically guessing on . The creatures are procedurally animated, and which parts you give them affects how they attack, act, and move, so it's not going to be gimmicky.

Well, yeah, I've convinced myself. This discussion has made me think about what I expected from the game. The more I think about it, the more absurd it seems that it's going to be fun. What you stated is exactly what I think'll be gimmicky. What I expect now is that they'll attack differently, but they need to attack. Just like they need to eat, grow into a tribe, go into space. They just look and move differently.

tha_rami:
Your creature doesn't have to fight, that's what the social skill is all about.

Most units in most strategy games just look and move differently... We don't know the depth of creating creatures, weapons, buildings and vehicles.

I do wonder what it is you are looking for? Spore doesn't have a pre set story or a list of objectives for you to complete once (and then get bored). You will however always have a goal but it's up to you how you get there.

I'm looking for a story. Something well written. A set goal. An objective with obstacles beyond "do what you want" and "see what the computer throws at you". I want characters with a history, a depth, something worthwhile besides "they evolved this way".

I don't care much about sandbox games (mind you, I only count games like the Sims under that), but Spore actually looked good - until I started to think about it. Luckily, my thoughts can be wrong. I'm getting the game - if only to see whether I was right.

I can pretty much garentee you wont like this game if you're expecting a story. I could be wrong, but from the given information, Spore is more about telling the story of whatever species you make, and it can turn out any number of ways. I dbout there's a plot. That wouldn't suit the game.

My biggest concern when I first saw the space section was that you would get bored and wouldn't know what to do. With more recent vids, it seems that there will be quite a bit more to do, and a good deal of structure. I have no dbout that Spore will NOT be my favorite game, and I'm fairly sure I have realistic expectations of it as I only expect what I've seen in the vids. I don't expect a full RPG from the creature phase, I don't expect a full RTS from the civ phase. Like was said in a recent vid, Spore is suposed to be like a big interactive toy. If you're expecting something else, you probably will be disapointed. It's not all sandbox, you work up to sandbox.

My nephews will absolutely freak at that, looks ace!, much more like Spore than I expected from the DS.

I don't like games like Civ partly due to the lack of story but mainly because it gets out of hand as you have to manage all the cities and units. The difference with Spore is that a game will last much longer and yet the scale seems much much smaller. You start out with a single creature and you form a tribe, build a city and then the planet seems quite small to conquer until you fly off in a single UFO. That appeals to me a whole lot. The Sims lasted for as long as it was fun to play a single person.

The DS version looks cool. I wonder if we will be able to create fire breathing creatures in the PC version. It seems to be quite a good RPG game and I hope the PC version delivers on that area as well.

I think the rami is looking too much at the overview of the game, yes the stages will be the same no matter how creative you are, but it's the in-between moments that I hope will make the game interesting and fun.
In the same way that GTA can be fun by just driving around, some cool things can happen at random, and it's unique to you which makes it more special. Will Wright was talking about that actually.

It's a game designed for geeks, that's for sure!.

I think that's actually got a lot in common with game development, I've said it before, but DBPro is like the ultimate god game IMO, you actually create everything, things behave the way you tell them to, you have ultimate control over your own creations life, death, existence even. The way a lot of us use DBPro like it's a sandpit more than a programming language hammer this home, we could say that every time we change something, it's evolution. I mean, if your enemy in your game is easy to kill, you might try some things to make them tougher, smarter, better, but that's evolution at the end of the day. Perhaps that's why I always keep a positive attitude to bugs, eradicating them is actually fun, like curing disease in your own little world. For me there is nothing more fascinating than watching my little beings misbehave.

GTA is all about sandboxing IMO, the story line is just there so you don't sandbox in the same place the whole time - I loved GTA:SA, when your in your own little hood, riding BMX's and causing trouble with rival gangs. I remember one of the date missions, all these rival gang members ran past me, dragged my date out of the car and executed her right in front of me!. Horrific, but amazing that it could do that, seemingly just to pee me off!.

I don't think programming is going to be seen as the dark art it used to be before long, more and more, people are being encouraged to be creative in games. Hell in the next few years the term geek might need an upgrade, making your own games is gonna be no big deal. It's evolution baby!.

Yeah it's funny how "geeky" or "cult" things gradually become mainstream. I remember when the internet was geeky, now I hear 14-year-old chavy girls on the train talking about what file extensions their music has!

Spore for DS! hmm... I might have to get that, cause I know I'll play that more than the monster of sim it'll be on the pc. Although I would like it on the PC... hard to choose.

But either way, I look forward to at least trying this game. I hope it doesn't miss my expectations.

Wait... I thought it was all about the graphics???

Thank goodness creativity is blooming in this industry. I look forward to the next 60 years of watching it grow.
