I have always wondered when certain moderators became moderators. If you are a mod seeing this, please post when you became a mod! Also, Im curious as to how mods become mods. I think I heard somewhere that mods are elected? One of the mods said a while back that they would post a picture of the moderator controls... Havent seen it yet...

The only way to become a mod is by drinking the blood of a freshly slain hydra.

I think it was 2006, although I can't be sure... not long after the retro competition if I recall. It was a nomination I think, a thread where people nominated folk to be mods, like a voting system. Really the forum required a lot more moderation back then, these days we appear to be free from any major issues, generally there's no trolling, flaming, spamming, not like the old days .

And I can show a pic of the mod tools, although I would have to kill you.

It's not a secret or anything, but I'd still kill you

Mod tools are probably not as sexy as you'd think or hope, just some buttons, some dropdown lists, and a big red button that should never be pressed. Standard fare.

Health, Ammo, and bacon and eggs!

Yeah, these days it's a pretty big contrast to how things were. I don't think anybody's had a proper argument on here for a long while.

We've not had a Mac vs PC debate for a while, even they started getting civil...

But the last time I only jokingly tried to get a thread locked I ended up getting a newb slap because I went too far. I like to think I've grown up since then as we're talking about a few years ago, but then who really grows up in this world? Speaking of which, you've got girl cooties.

Actually your record is spotless.

I've only been a mod a few months and was recommended by David. My first week was hectic with power, but I've settled down.

That's odd, because I definitely had one. It was probably 2005/2006, but if my record is spotless, then great, I shall celebrate by breaking every rule listed in the AUP in a single post. Including the ones about revealing my age when I'm under aged, which means I'm going to have to wait until time travel is invented and I can get 16 year old Sepp to do it. If my profile suddenly disappears then it's because Jeku perma-banned me 6 years ago. On the plus side, it'll prove we'll have time travel in the future.

I think talking about the AUP should be banned.

Quote: "On the plus side, it'll prove we'll have time travel in the future."

No it wont because that post will disappear too, so we'll have no idea you were going to time travel.
I find that idea quite unsettling, that maybe something could change the past as we are moving through time and we would instantly forget it like it never happened! Maybe what you remember happening five minutes ago is a lie!

Maybe it happened, but because I forgot about wanting to do it I forgot to do it and it has un-happened?

You see, I have the memory of an elephant, or what it a goldfish? I can never seem to remember which.

Yeh im also curious about what my record looks like from when i got slapped. Also, that slap was a tad unfair in my opinion.... I even mailed a mod about it with good reason for it being unfair and no reply yet...

Also, if a mod were to post a pic of the controls, that mod would be the most awesomerest mod on the forum. I may even advertise said good mod in my signature.

They're only human. Except BigAdd, I've yet to figure out what he is, very few have ever known and most of them haven't lived to tell the tale and those who do live fear to do so.

Also, talking about what VanB mentioned, back in the day when this forum was a lot more heated I did make a rant thread on trying to get people to chill the h out. Might have a few giggles in it or an insight to what the forum was like back in 2005 (which apparently was nothing compared to 2002).

Ah, the old days. And blimey, I was just a school boy too.

Wait are you saying that you went back in time, breached the AUP, got banned, then forgot to build a time machine so the whole thing never happened?

But that means you would have to enter the time machine at exactly the same time every time you came back for the change to be permanent, so eventually it would never happen, and since we are talking about time travel it already never happened. So time travel would be like creating a loop in a piece of string that would gradually tighten and then vanish. Could happen.

The forums looked a lot more fun back in 2005. Sure there was a lot of cursing and trolling, but that was probably part of the fun.

What if the mods loosen up a bit, whip out the alochol, and let the forum go downhill from there?

Or another suggestion, why not have an anual TGC flaming week where cursing, flaming, trolling, insulting, religious debates, and political debates are all allowed, but only for one week?

Nah, that's just complete randomness... No flame wars going on there. The overall impression of the posting competition is tilted towards happy and friendly.

Ahh, the old "Can I be a MOD?" thread, subtly disguised.

I think there should be a rule: anyone who ever asks to be a MOD should automatically be blacklisted from MODness. The only real reason people want to be a MOD is for the apparent respect/prestige, or the power of being able to slap people/lock threads. It can't be a desire to clean up this here town! It's not Sierra Leone anymore. Unexplained deaths are right down!

The only reason for allowing the Posting Competition to stay open is to keep the boards a little cleaner. At least we know where to find the trolls and work out who's likely to be troublesome

I became a mod the same month as Newsletter 49...over 5 years ago

I've requested that the big red button in the mod controls is made smaller, and a grungy brown colour. Big red buttons are always very tempting to press.

I'm not sure I'd really want to be a mod... After the initial feeling of ABSOLUTE POWER wears off it requires that you behave sensibly and do thankless tasks such as approving posts. Being a valued member on the other hand...

I became a mod in either 2004 or 2005, whenever that giant thread happened where Richard Davey asked for volunteers across all time zones. Somebody nominated me and the rest is history! I used to be kind of a badass moderator but I hope that has died down since then. Ahhhhh can't believe it's already been 7 or 8 years

Looks like the toy knobs and resistors on cardboard we use to play with back in the late 70's/early 80's.

Glad to see some technology has remained over the years.

Hm with all my countless googling I cannot find it. It was sometime back before 2009 iirc. A looong time ago. It was just a few extra buttons for lock, and each post had a slap button or link. I think. I can't quite remember haha.

I remember some of these mods when they were just normal users like me. Those were the good 'ol days.

Ditto. Based on my tutorial contributions, work in the 3D board, work in the team request board, and cool temper I was nominated a mod.

The reason I didn't reply was because your entire email was just one long excuse at how you weren't to blame for creating 2 duplicate accounts. It wasn't unfair. You weren't slapped for the first duplicate account you made, so I slapped you for the second.
Also I had warned you a second time for stretching out posts in the posting competition, so it just told me you needed a little break.

Essentially your email just said boiled down to this:
1. It's the Mod's fault I created 2 duplicate accounts
2. You didn't have proof the two accounts were mine, so you are doing a hasty job
4. There is nothing in the AUP to say what I did was wrong
5. I want to be un-slapped because of your errors.

That's why I didn't reply. I've had this email a thousand times, and while you didn't swear and curse at me (like a large majority of the people I ban do) I've seen it before.
