Very good news guys. I've got a simple multiplayer demo working. It's just text based, but I understand the commands now!

I *hope* to get a simple 3d demo in the next few days. I've been reading an article on how to do multiplayer in Gamasutra, I'll put it to the test

I've found some code that gives 3d multiplayer. I'm studying it now

This won't be easy. But I'm gonna give it a shot

The biggest problem is getting synchronisation between the two PCS - I can move the two hman players OK - I can only hope that the two AI players move the same ways on both PCs

Okay, daily update on the multiplayer.

I've got a working demo where people can scan for games at an address, join them, go to a lobby where they wait for others to join then go to a game where you can move around seeing each other in 3D.

What's more, it's under 200 lines and hopefully compatible with Mercenary Engine.

Integration work starts now!

[I know should use the edit button I'm too extatic at the moment]

I've got multiplayer working!!! With up to four players in one mpa you can walk around and see each other. Next comes getting all entities in the same place. After that, making it so when one person fires, they fire in all the other games.

The nice thing is if the connection is lost of there's really long lag, the PC takes over playing for the character until communication is made again

heh, sorry... I only saw his first post. I started typeing before the second one got through, I guess... Sorry, powersoft.

Edit: I didn't have enough time to say more than "sorry" back there, so here I go...

That was really kinda wierd. I saw powersoft's first post, and stright-away started tpying a responce... But powersoft posted again before I hit "post message", and since the forum's aren't really going to refreash unless I tell them to... Ah well. Sorry again!

@DavidT: if I were you, I would put the source code under the GNU Free Publication Lisence (or whatever it is ). That way no one can change the models, levels, SFX, music, etc., etc. and call your game their own; that would really suck! But it's your game, and whatever you do with it is ok with me

btw, who's your music guy? If he did the intro music in Beta2... Wow! That guy's kick-butt good! Tell him I said so...

As for the name thingee... SUE THE PANTS OFF OF MICROSOFT! heh, just kidding... Really kinda sucks... Lemme think a bit, I might be able to come up with something. I actually had a two-page list of cool names for games, but MSBlaster got a hold of my comp a coupla months ago and didn't let go untill it really chewed up the hard drive... Ah well, maybe I can come up with something... If it's ok with you

~Hawkeye

EDIT2: OW! I just read powersoft's thread about his scorched earth remake, and saw his last post Look very carefuly at powersoft's last post on this thread, the one when he says "Yeah..."

Ow...

EDIT3: Give a coupla monkeys computers, bananas, and DBPro and they'll turn out the next DOOM? lol.

Music guy? Secret And no he didn't do that music, that's from overclocked remix (It's the gerudo theme from zelda 64). He's doing some music to replace it.

GPL? Nah nobody'd understand teh codez

Multiplayer is coming along nicely...

Hi,

Sorry but I haven't tried yet! I've been so distracted by coding multiplayer although it's relatively easy to do and I definately plan on getting it in

Update on the multiplayer It's running really well, unfortunately I don't have another PC powerful enough to test it so I'm running two copies of the game windowed. But you can walk around the levels seeing each other walk around and all enemies are synch'ed. Now time to sync guns, bullets and health

David, I'll talk to you about this over msn later.
Right now I've sorted alot of problems, so fingers crossed in two weeks you will have what I've promied you

However it isn't going to be a Modifiable DBP Engine like it was originally, I'll cover this more over MSN.
Your going to be my guinea pig for it i'm afraid, hehee
It will also mean you get a free version to make Merc2 with.

I'll talk with you later.

Okay See you later.

Just implemented a screen which waits for all players to have finished loading the game before starting it. Before, you'd find fast computers laoded first and it got out of sync. Stupid me!

As for the overhead that I'm sending, it's only 40 bytes 4 times a second Which is 160 bytes a second sent. Is that too much?

[edit]

Here's a screen of the multiplayer.

It's doing okay so far, obviously far from finished but I'm working on it.

Every 10 seconds a packet of 256 bytes will be sent from the host detail the postiions and staus of all the bots on his PC. The bots on all the other PCs will be repositioned.

Obviously, ther'll be some slight innaccuracy and bots may jump a few metres but nothing too horrific

Okay I've done even more work on multiplayer today:

- Move around in a world with up to 4 human players (only tested with two :p)

- All bots are in the same place over the whole world

- One human can shoot an enemy, and they get shot across all other machines

- At the moment the deathmatch is only co-operative. This does allow for some good scenarios, for example a dedicated sniper helping out comrades. It also doesn't allow those "haha fragged you!" moments. I'll see what I can do about that

David T - have a look at the bottom of This thread... I think I've got ragdolls working with the models from your demo (Dark Matter 2?) !! I still have a little work to do, and then I'll be releasing a demo of the system (probably tomorrow). please give it a try and let me know what you think.

however now that you're going to multiplayer, I doubt you'll want to try to add Newton physics to the system... synching physics over a network is a monumentous task. unless you just want to let the ragdolls flail around individually on each user's system (like in Unreal Tournament 2003)...

Go Go Gadget DBPRO!

Yes, that's one thing that won't be syncing Thanks very much - I'll go on it later today when I'm on my dev machine.
