Freedom and lots of choices is what makes a game fun IMO.

Video games…they take you places unreachable, unfeasible. Putting you in the book...putting you in the movie...putting you in a world, that before could only be imagined. expage.com/piratesmainpage.

Do what now? What's this thread about again?

Sorry. 2 Players? Yeah, that helps to have. And for easiness then have it all on split screen. Normally seriously easy to bolt that (ie. no network gubbins) on a game.

The key to making addicting games is to not say the word addicting. EVER.

Oh shut up. Your thread was dead ages ago. Thank us for keeping it going and making your post count look good. I mean grief, people didn't really give a monkeys what makes games so "addicting" in the first place. If anyone had the definitive answer they would be making millions right now.

Grief, stop having a sulk and get on with it.

I'd say the definitive answer is ... to have the most money.
Everyone knows games are sold by Advertising; if there is *actually* a game to get excited about behind all of that, then everyones happy.

Publishers answer quite simply is... provided you fork over the cash, who cares past that. Hense why games look more and more pretty with less and less gameplay. You can't tell how crap something is by screenshots and movies.

This was a interesting and succesful thread Keemo, it's rare that a thread 'here' waits till page 2 to go off-topic.

Next time though you should post this stuff in game design theory - it moves a lot slower, less replies, but the thread lasts a lot longer and over time might generate more usefull comments.

I'm working on a strangely addictive calcultor game right now - it's called Saca. You're this little dude (omega symbol) who runs around, getting to the next screen. You can jump on things and such. Some of my favorite levels reward the player for finding something out or thinking intuitively. For some reason, everyone who plays it gets mad at it, as well as hooked. Make it madding, but have a way to avoid the madness in the first place - that is one of the componets, I think.

(And, on the topic of my Saca game - it's only a 24-line engine! It runs so fast that I'll probably put in a speed option to make it easier to control . If you want to know how I did all this in TI-BASIC, the collision is based on matrices, and instead of displaying the whole level string each loop, I only replace where the character was last move.)

Obviously. For users. Look at the column called "Post" next to a thread. It has numbers in it. Post count in fact. Thread looks better with a higher post count.

Meteos. Play. Learn.

That is an addicting game I'd love another game like that or e2 (e3 should be on both DS and PSP just so I don't have to go and buy a PSP.)

And Keemo STFU. Its your fault you posted it in geek culture than game design, it's not our fault your stupid.

I think games need to focus more on the game aspect of games than the story. If people want a story, they can get a book, and do that thing, whats it called.... breading? No, reading. Definately reading.

I think thats probably the biggest problem with games these days.

When Halo 2 was still hot and toasty in stores , i read a review about it , and it said "one of the things that made me like Halo 2 was its storyline " and they rated Halo 2 10/10 . So do stories play an important role in the game ? Does it give the player confidence when a part of the story says "you are the only pilot from our planet that can use this ship " so the player thinks "hmm.. i must not fail them , because im the only oe fit for the job " so he takes it more seriously , that makes him try harder in winning the game , and then it becomes fun . Is this normal ?

Van B wins. You feel powerful in GTA. You can just grab some poor Joe Schmoe's car and begin your rampage, all those patrol cars chasing you makes you feel respected for your carnage. It's the NPC reactions that make Fable great. In comparison to most RPGs its very shallow in traditional content but the prestige hooks you. It's the same for MMORPGs, there are few role playing servers because people just want to become the best.
I set up the high score feature on my mole game when I showed it off in class and instantly everybody started trying to beat each other's score. It's competition to be the best, and games like GTA and Fable accomplish that without multiple human players.

I'm going to eat you!
