I'm working on a strangely addictive calcultor game right now - it's called Saca. You're this little dude (omega symbol) who runs around, getting to the next screen. You can jump on things and such. Some of my favorite levels reward the player for finding something out or thinking intuitively. For some reason, everyone who plays it gets mad at it, as well as hooked. Make it madding, but have a way to avoid the madness in the first place - that is one of the componets, I think.
(And, on the topic of my Saca game - it's only a 24-line engine! It runs so fast that I'll probably put in a speed option to make it easier to control
. If you want to know how I did all this in TI-BASIC, the collision is based on matrices, and instead of displaying the whole level string each loop, I only replace where the character was last move.)
