Dude, stop bleeping out blitz, we won't kill you for it DBP has types, oh yes, as I recall my cinco entry used at least 15. They're not essential, but they certainly make things easier

@ code master,
UDT's or types are not essential, they are simply more convenient, DBP has them , but i choose not to use them, instead i use the old stlye arrays for everything. not because there is anything wrong with them , but because i like the old arrays better, just personal preference.

cheers, grant.

PS they are not essential for ANY game.

nah, just turn the monitor through 90 gegrees, that should do the trick nicley , playing aspect might be a bit odd though. (joke)

Incidently, did you know that about 90% of vert scrollers in the arcades are actually horizontal scrollers with the screens turned anti clockwise through 90 degrees.

changing your game should be fairly easy if you coded it in a logical well documented manner. best of luck

cheers, Grant.

Yes , i will hafe to change the whole game , but that isn`t going to be too much of trouble , becouse i only have one level so far , i mean it will be fairly easy , but will take some time .

Dodic,
You can show others what you're working on for feedback etc, the judges might play the game but they wont "judge" it. We're not going to be judging any games until after the contest is over!

Here is a FAQ regarding the shmup competition, I'll try to answer all the questions that are asked frequently. feel free to ask more and I'll update.

Q) Can I make a platform game like Metal Slug or Contra?
A) No, in the game you must be either flying left or right, or it can be top-down walking left or right OR something like that. I would stay away from anything remotely close to Mario Bros / Sonic the Hedgehog, Contra, Metal Slug, Abuse, etc, etc, etc.

Q) Can the player rorate in any direction?
A) No, you should be facing left or right in the game, but you can rotate your character about 45 degrees up or down if you really want to. Your character may also move in the direction it is facing within the said limitations. However, The turrets / weapons can aim in any direction though.

Q) Can it be free scrolling left or right?
A) Yes, you can switch the scrolling effect left or right in your game.

Q) Does my game have to scroll in a direction forceably?
A) No, the scrolling may be dependant on the character but there must be a scrolling mechanic in the game.

Q) Will I get extra points if I have extra levels in my game and multiple bosses?
A) To be fair, the competition will compare your first level and first boss with other games' first level and first boss. However, you might receive extra points if you make more levels, but a game with one level and one boss that plays better will still most likely get a higher score.

Q) Can I rip graphics from a commercial game?
A) Only if it is declared as public domain, or you have explicit permission from the authors. This site does not prmoote any illegal activity and ripping graphics is copy right infringement!

Q) What are the judges looking for in graphics or sound or gameplay?
A) The key is mainly gameplay and fun-factor. The mroe fun the game, the higher the score. If the game has superb graphics but plays poor the game will not do well in this competition. If the game has awesome gameplay and poor graphics it will do better in comparison. Although great gameplay and great graphics with great sound will probably be the best but is most likely very difficult to achieve anyways. The key is gameplay, remember that. Sound is the same, it only does well if everything else does well. Great music and sound on a bad game won't do any good. So make sure the gameplay is good above all other things if you want to win.

Q) Does it have to be 20 megs?

A) No 20 megs is the limit, if the DOWNLOAD itself is larger than 20 megs it will be disqualified.

Q) Is it 20 megs zipped or unzipped?
A) IT really depends on the DOWNLOAD.. If your download is 19 megs zipped and then the game itself is 40 megs unzipped you are OKAY. It's all about the download size and nothing else.

Q) What programming language can I use?
A) Any programming language, SDK, engine, Game Editor, etc is allowed in this contest. As long as the game works without needing to download 3rd party software that needs PURCHASED you are OK. Please make sure that you tell the us what software we need to play your game (if we need a special driver, etc)

Q) Do I have to be in a team?
A) No you don't have to be on a team

Q) Can I be an artist on my friends team and do my own game?
A) No, if you are in the competition you can only do ONE thing. If you're making a game you cannot help by providing media for another persons game or vice versa.

Q) How many people can be on a team?
A) 3 MAX. No more than 3 people can be assigned to a team.

Q) If I'm not on a team then can I submit my entry?
A) Yes, you can!

Q) Can I have keyboard / mouse / gamepad control?
A) You can use all three if you want. You WILL lose points if it is a gamepad / joystick ONLY game. I would recommend keyboard OR mouse control WITH a gamepad option. BUT just keyboard or JUST mouse is ok, it all matters how it works with your game really.

Q) What are the Maximum System Requirements?
A) Windows XP, AMD ATHLON XP 3000, 1 GIG DDR, nvidia 6800

Hi I have 2 questions:

What is mean, only demo qualified? Unable to entry with a well-done, full version game? And if its true, must to apper a demo sign in the game or what?

And the 2nd question is, able to entry with a game made by DBP demo?

And sorry if theese question already answered (then im not found)

Cheers,
FZoli.

Rigo,

Of course a full game would be accepted, it's just that Matt is a developer and is realistic about what can be done in such a short time period, saying it just has to be 1 level with a boss is a nice way to encourage people who might think they couldn't do it in time. It's your game, you should decide if it's finished, a demo, gonna be worked on after the compo, or something you never want to see again - it depends on what your plans are. If your submitting a demo that you intend to develop further, then it's probably a good idea to tell people, just a little text under the title with 'Demo Version' would suffice. If your game is finished, then you can brag about finishing a game so quickly instead .

If you weren't allowed to use the demo, then why would TGC offer full copies of DBPro as prizes? - like anyone here would need DBPro to enter the compo to win DBPro, it's usually the case that the trial version is perfectly acceptable. At the end of the day, I think the important thing is that it's an executable with a game in it that meets the criteria.

Thanks alot Van B! I appreciate your support Sorry for my delayed response all, I got struck with a nasty flu and been bed-ridden for 3 days. I'm still a little under the weather but since the fever seems to be gone or too low I can function again.

Van B would be correct with his answer, and it is exactly how I view it.

As far as submissions go, please submit your game to contest@shmup-dev.com or a LINK of it to the said email address.

This would ensure we (the judges) get ALL the games without missing one. It would be a sad day if we accidently missed your game so please make sure we have received it!!

March 20th is the deadline date! So please send it on over by then. The game does not have to be a 'complete' game at all, like Van B said!

Regards,
Matt

my entry is almost done (demo that is), i just need more weapon upgrades and im still waiting for the new media.

other than that this competition was a great idea, i have learned quite a lot during the development time. but i still think i will get very low points but it doesn't matter, atleast i improved as a programmer (in my opinion)

would it be ok to have 2 levels and 2 bosses, or will only the first level count? because in my game i have more stuff on level 2..

To be fair, the competition will compare your first level and first boss with other games' first level and first boss. However, you might receive extra points if you make more levels, but a game with one level and one boss that plays better than a game with multiple levels and bosses will still most likely get a higher score.

Good Question Drew, I would probably give you more points if you had a menu system. BUT, if I compared a game with poor playability with a menu system to a game with great playability without a menus system, the latter would win.
