Sorry about the delay in posting the demo all. I have been having a few bug problems and as per order of the S.O. am taking a week off the project, this likely due to the fact that I grabbed my keyboard and broke it over my knee friday night (no anger issues here) Just a stupid bug that i actually believe is coming from my data files not my code but is still something i have been unable to find (resists breaking new keyboard) (think happy thoughts) I will post again in a few days with some progress.

@ Hobgoblin Lord - I know it's corny - but how about a Hobgoblin Lord for the boss? surely it has to be done?

Hey all,

Sorry it has been a while since I have posted here, though I took some time off from coding this project I have been doing alot of media work. I have done a little with the coding and am now sure that I need a rework of the combat engine and inventory system this seems to be where my problems have arisen with the sudden program termination. I spent days combing through my data (which I had encrypted to keep nosy people from cheating) and could not find any errors in it so I am pretty sure it is all safe to keep as is. I will be posting some more images soon and be getting back to coding once I finish up the texture set I am working on.

Cheers.

I'm a huge fan of the old Bard's Tale/Wasteland style games, great work on this one! I started work on something similar for school before I read the forum and saw yours, yours is much much better than mine! Can't wait for your demo to come out

Just use an algorithm where you divide all the speeds and animation rates by the current framerate each frame to keep things moving exactly as fast as you want them to

Greetings all,

A bit since I have posted here, but fear not I work on this project all the time. It has overgone a few overhauls (None of which I am satisfied with yet) and I have spent a ton of time working on the media. Thought I would share the last few character portraits.

Hob,

This is looking good. I have pretty much stuck to the DBPro forum, but I think as time permits I will venture into the WIP and a few other forums. I have been paying attention to Cash Curtis' work and I am sure to follow this one as well. Keep up the good work. Nice artwork btw

Thank, Have to admit I have not been working as much on this since I started on the retro remake competition, but I am still working. I have this nice flowchart on my wall of the structure (16 pieces of 11x17" paper taped together) to remind me what I still need to work on.

Hobgoblin, your art is amazingly beautiful! If the gameplay is as good as the media, then this will be a good game. Just don't overwelm yourself with creating media. I tried making a an RPG once, but the amount of images I planned to make was way over what I could accomplish. Good luck in the future!

Thanks Manette.

Hopefully I will get an actual artist who wants to help out on this project at some point, but so far its all me.It may take me longer to make the game, but I want it to be good. A bad game can scare off future purchases even if the later game is great.

It's going ok, not as well as I had hoped, but still making progress. I have been completly rewriting how my levels are constructed to allow multi tier maps and not have to change them. This process has taken quite a while because everytime I think I am approaching the finish line I say "Wait! This can be better." and start to rework things, so it has been a six steps forward, 5 steps back kind of process. I have held off on new screenies cuz I change my mind so darn often, I am shooting for a complete playable Beta by the end of the year, I know that seems like a while but I really want to be at a point of "polish" when I release it not a point of "Rebuild". After the Beta I am planning on the full release June of 2007, if it is readfy before then there is something wrong, and I must be cutting corners.

@ Hobgoblin - excellent - sounds like it is going v well and you're taking what sounds like the right approach to development - with me it is usually 6 steps forward, 7 steps back, damn it, start again...

as and when you can, post a few screenies to keep this thread alive...

I wish, More like barbain basement 4.99 quality. Seriously though, This game is not focused on the graphics but on the gameplay, however I am going to try to make it as good looking as I possibly can with the tools I have.

Hobgoblin, omg, are these all original artwork by you? the character drawings are awesome. I'm not bad at UI and stuff, but I can't draw on paper to save my life.

Did you see this?..

Does it look like it might be useful for you? I might be able to be persuaded to do some extra work to produce all the necessary wigets to go with it.

Cheers!

Yes and at the same time no

I draw the initial figure, if you look back a few pages you will see my original sketches, but I have them professionally inked for two reasons. 1) when I try to ink and then scan it in I never get the right look and I am awful at coloring with the mouse. 2)My color and shading are dodgy at best, it is something I should work harder on, I just cant get the metal to shine like these guys do.

I could use all the help I can get, this UI is not quite right for what I am doing. Give me a minute and I will post a screenie of something more the flavor I am looking for.

You may notice I worked a couple of your graphics into this Dave.

Oneka, post more info in my "Artist's Challenge Thread" when it comes time and you need a skin.

Dave here is the basic layout for my UI. It is on a 25x25 grid and 1024 x 768 (I know, i like fractions for that last chunk). The areas I inset mean that that is the internal dimension of the area, this is where graphics get plugged in so in between the borders should be these exact dimensions. I am looking for something creepy, dark, and disturbed. Perhaps cracked bricks some cobwebs, skulls here and there (whatever your little heart can imagine). There are a few more components that get dropped onto the UI if you are interested later, such as the inventory layout for a character will fit right over the game text area and cover it.

Let me know if you need more direction with this, my above example should also provide some insight into the look I am trying to achieve.

Thank You

Ok, I did a bit of work on the UI,.. This is my first pass on the layout. Note this is a Work In Progress, comments and feedback are expected and welcome.

P.S. THis sample is a .jpg the final pic will be bmp or png, but I wanted to save on bandwidth. (even as a .png the file came in at 800k)

Looks good so far dave, I would like to see the large bottom box parchment like also. Perhaps the detail tag under the 3d window could be a little less of a rectangle and tattered a little along the edges. I think the tapestry bar across the top two windows should be cut into two seperate pieces. Also if you could drop in "impressions" for the character portraits that would be nice.

For a quick bit of work (or 10 hours worth if it was me) it looks really good already. Thanks

Thanks for the comments and feedback. I can and will do most of the requests, but your request to make the large bottom box parchment also will imho be overkill. As is, the parchment areas are distinct and define the required areas nicely. Also you mentionned that there will be a Inventory overlay that will go over the large text area. I will make that more styleized, but would suggest you try the plain text area box before requesting it be changed to a large parchment. I'll do some more work on it tomorrow. Oh and any more additions to this (like the character portrait boxes) will be a separate file. You add them in games as opposed to them being 'permanent' fixtures on the UI. I might make some 'decorations' like a spiderweb that you can overlay in game also.

Cheers!

I was gonna work on it tomorrow, but I'm having too much fun O_o

Let me know what yout think,.. this has added spiderwebs in the corners, the parchment below the 3D view has been stressed along the edges and the character portrait frames have been added. (I also posted here a .png version of one of the frames with alpha chanel transparency.
