Nintendo Wii

As in "we".

So lame

http://revolution.nintendo.com

Do you people agree that this is lame? How embarrassed will we be going into the store and asking to see a wee? Argh.

EDIT:

The site seems to be slashdotted at the mo, but it's just a crappy Flash animation with a bunch of dancing i's. Then there's a few paragraphs on the reasoning behind the new name.

i.e. "it's not about you and me, but wii" etc. *barf*

Maybe they want to polish (like it needs it...) the nintendos image as childerns console:
"It's so cute, Wii! I want that daddy I want that"

May it's not a revolution, it's just a Wii, not even Woot.

And EA announced Madden for the Wii today--- it's pretty cool, being developed in the building where I am. You use the controller to play interactively, not simply hitting buttons. It's going to kick serious butt

Nice? You seen it?

Have you see the revolution dev kits?

btw - are you working in the Vancouver building? The PWC one? If so you're directly opposite the hotel I stayed in - the Pan Pacific I think?

Sorry, can't say much about the game. I'm working on a PSP title so I have a PSP dev--- haven't seen the Revolution ones, but I could if I took a walk over to where they were

I worked at the Vancouver building back when you visited here, when I was QA on NHL 2005 (they also did Need For Speed Most Wanted there), but now I'm an SE at the other Vancouver one. It's technically the largest game studio in the world

What the fupples?

Can you imagine the grins you'll get when you walk in the store and ask for a Wii... "oh yeah, sure dude, just down the hall there, be sure not to make a mess"

Quote: " "Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play."

In addition, Nintendo has re-iterated the main features of what was formally called the Nintendo Revolution, noting "a smart, compact design, approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together." The company also revealed: "A variety of prototype colors are being showcased during E3. It will come with a silver stand that makes the system a welcome, artistic component of any multimedia setup, whether it's displayed vertically or horizontally."

Details on the disc format have also been confirmed: "Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content."

Once again confirmed is backward compatibility ("The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCube generation"), and downloadable classic titles ("The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).")

In addition, it's revealed that a bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory. The system boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi access. A worldwide network of Nintendo players "can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment."

Finally, according to Nintendo, "the introduction of a number of new franchise properties will add to the world's richest stable of stars, including Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong and Metroid. Also according to Nintendo, a number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo's newly announced wireless gaming service, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Many more details are sure to be announced at E3."

I dunno, I like it more than "Revolutions". And after taking a second look it is a neat play on the lettering how the two "ii"s look like two people and the two controllers.

Creative name, but I doubt it'll win over the X360 and PS3 people.

It's not really a matter of being a lame name, but a matter of people too embarrassed to admit they like something which others refer to as "gay".

DS people out-number the PSP people. But where the hell are they? Oh right, playing Animal Crossing in their room and not playing GTA on the subway.

(edit: Got Animal Crossing btw a few days ago. Nice distraction.)

American companies have made similar blunders when doing the reverse - introducing their brands into Japan and elsewhere. The "Coke Adds Life!" campaign translated into Japanese as "Coke brings your relatives back from the dead", and Coca-Cola itself translated in some Chinese dialects as "rabbit excrement". Chevy's Nova compact car when introduced into Mexico did poorly (No va = "Doesn't run").

I find it an unfortunate name, so I will choose to pronounce it wrongly The English language is mutable anyway.

"Wa-ee" or maybe "Wa-ii"

Meh, look on the bright side, if your friend gets one before you, you can be the real smart-bum and go, "Hey, can I play with your urine?"...

Am I the _only_ one who can see this issue? A room full of IRCers didn't even pick up on it

As long as it does what it says/said on the tin, I shall be happy. If you don't like it at all, you could always just call it the Nintendo Revolution yourself, just because they name it something, doesn't mean the havve to call it that.

I know we've had piss jokes already, but I can picture myself lying in bed at night, knowing I have to get up to use it, but trying not to for a couple of hours before the urge becomes too great, relieving my urge, and then spending the next hour trying to get back to sleep.

They could have called it the W2, and it sounds better, plus they could have the same logo of two people with controllers. WII.

Not the greatest name ever but I doubt anyone has EVER decided whether or not to buy a console based on what it's called. And if it means less abbreviation filled games mags (pretty hard to abbreviate Wii) then I'm happy.

That's EA Tiburon, and AFAIK they usually work on all of the Madden and NCAA Football titles. And they're developing the new Superman game.

The studio here does every other EA Sports game (Fifa, Hockey, NBA Live, Rugby, NFL Street, etc.) and many of the non-sports franchises (NFS, SSX, etc.).

Oh for the love of god and all that is holy I hope it is developed better than the 64 version.

As far as Wii, I think its extremely tacky to try and throw things like "it looks like people, or the controllers" into the mix when considering a name. It's like a badly designed, overly saturated website layout. Simple, and its easy to remember, people will like it, it will sell. But strange and drastic, thats a serious gamble, especially in the world where teenagers would do anything to be cool, and owning a "Wii" would definitely not be cool. But I admire Nintendo for finally taking some kind of a risk for once, though I doubt it will win many people over, it's got the potential to be a household name.

You know, theres never been a game system who's name is simply unpleasant to say, and changing it to an unpleasant name is the stupidest move that Nintendo could have done. There's no going back, the chances of Nintendo surving are now slim to nil .

When you think about it, does ipod actually sound cool? No. It only sounds cool because enough people have it to make it sound cool. I seriously doubt Nintendo's chances of surviving are any more at stake than when it was code-named Revolution. The system itself is so different, and I'm guessing it the prices and innovation and extreme backwards compatibility are only going to make Wii great, weather or not it has an outlandish name.
Maybe you remember when the talk about the ds before it came out, where people ridiculed it for so many reasons, and it looked like Nintendo might have made a huge mistake. But now the ds is looking like one of the most successful game platforms ever, I believe. Start thinking about Wii as if it were something like an ipod, and you may begin to see how this could be a household name.
Besides, do you seriously think Nintendo's been surviving on profit from the consol market for the past few years?? Nintendo basically owns the handheld market, even with the psp to contend with.

Sorry, but I think Nintendo’s going to come out of this doing great, no matter how much anyone here gripes about “Wii”. I might be wrong, but I doubt it.

Come on. Not every product has a dumb name to begin with, which we all grow to love. I don't remember ever batting an eye to iPod or DS. But I think the Wii controller looks lame, and now the name is just--- ridiculous. You Nintendo fanboys would love it even if it were called Limp Noodle.

The Wii may well be the only next-gen system I purchase because of Nintendo's history with quality games, but that name is just stupid.

Well, I've never owned a console before but I'm still considering purchasing the Wii because of its innovative interface. Name or no name, I used to be PC-only until now.

Actually, I just realised another silver lining to the name Wii - it's pronounced wee (which we've all noticed). But that's 'small' in Scottish.

"Awright mate - you got that wee console yet?"
"Aye, the wee masheeen is next to ma telly."

Or alternatively...

*girly voice* "What's that you're playing - it's so cute!"
"Yup, it's just wee."

I'd be pushing that connotation more than the urine one

The wee console, with a big heart ;D

well wee can mean small, but i think it still can mean taking a wee aswell, i too think that the name is stupid, i can understand nintendo is trying to be innovative by making athe remote controller and everything, but i really think there pushing it with the name 'wii' and you cant compare the name to an ipod or ds, perhaps if it was a called an ipoo then it would be on the same level.

It is possible that Nintendo is mispelling it, and that they actually mean something else, although I can't guess what. They have done that before. In the 1980's when they came out with Donkey Kong (featuring a gorilla) the rights holders of the original King Kong movie sued them for copyright infringement. Nintendo got off the hook. I was representing Sega US on copyright matters at the time for coin-op video games and got some inside industry scoop. Nintendo had thought the game translated as Monkey Kong! The spelling boo-boo helped them, ironically.

Wii. Riiiiight. Luckily I live in Spain and they don´t know what wee means. I can´t begain to imagine what affect this will happen on sales. People are way more image conscius than you think. Just because wii don´t care what the name is, the average joe that Nintendo is aiming for does.

I will admit that when the Dreamcast name was unveiled, many (including myself) thought it was such a lame name, especially with the swirly logo. Now it's part of our everyday gaming talk and nobody thinks of it in that negative connotation anymore.

Nintendo should have just called it a Super Plasma Bolt 56000 ---- then everyone would want it

It´s not the fact that it´s lame. That goes without saying nowadays. I mean play...station. Wow. Sounds like fun. So imaginative.
It´s the fact that it means wee as in pee as in piss. They could have least asked an English native. Just because ii suposable means good in japanese and the ipod uses i deosn´t mean they should overlook what it means in the most important language sales wise.
