I have come up with my own theory, and I have proof.

3D Does Not Exist On Computers

Lets see why:

A 3 Dimensional object should have the following parameters:

-A X axis (left to right- Side)
-A Y axis (up to down- Height)
-A Z axis (forward to backwards- Depth)

Now lets focus on the Z axis for a while. A Z axis(depth) is the major difference between 2d sprites and 3d models, because it makes the model look.. real. Now you might think that 3d exists, and the proof is that you can actually rotate the model and see the rest of the polys/faces which convince you that its actually 3d. Its not. They always tell you to look out of the box, as in, the screen (not the monitor hardware itself). If you look at your screen, its view is 2d, no matter how much work or great effects you see, its still 2d in the end. So there you have it, 3d doesn't exist, but 3d rendering does!

Im sure 99.999% of you arent convinced, please do tell.

Umm, welcome to the club... Theres a reason they call it 3-Dimensional rendering, and not 3-Dimensional display. You wasted a lot of brain power and created a lot of smoke for nada.

I feel so...enlightened. My life will never be the same again.

Can I assume you're still using the old 2D monitors from the 1990's then?

Just wear 3D glasses.

Actually, I think it never is 3D at all, not even the rendering. It is just 2D sprites stretched and scaled to match the position and angle of the camera, right?

Here's an even bigger phenomenon:

The current QWERTY keyboard you are using was designed to actually slow you down by positioning keys in awkward places.

Here's another one:

Ice-Cream melts if you try to BBQ it.

@Uncle Sam: Almost got it.

@BatVink: No dude, Its a new compaq flat screen one. And Im a 3d Artist, I didnt say the so called 3d work done by people is not good or fake, no I just think, 3d is quite impossible, cos no matter how realistic it is, the screen is still flat. But if we are talking Cyberlife-wise, then yes,it truly is 3d.

EDIT:

@Megaton Cat: I know its obvious, just wanted to make sure you guys are aware of it .

Yeah Megatrons right it's because the old keyboards used to break because typists were so fast at them.

P.S: Your expert revelation is kind of lame and obvious. It's like that time I had a photo of my house in my hand. I said - "That's my house, to which a person next to me said, "No, it's a photo of your house". Ha.

And by "old keyboard" in the above post, I mean type writer.

Quote: "Im sure 99.999% of you arent convinced, please do tell."

Oh yeah just to argue, technically the final image on the screen, is 3D anyway, not 2D. You can move around the screen which has the 3D render on it(in the real world) and it will rotate and stuff etc... like stuff kind of does when you move around it.

You know, they are developing holograpic monitors... They have some already, they just don't work very well yet. At least not at the level that is marketable.

It is 3D because we live in a 4 dimensional world.

X/Y/Z and time.

Computers have X/Y and time...at least!!! so deffinately 3D and I have proved it!!! so there!!!

AS A NOOB EXPERT I HAVE COME TO A FINAL THEOREM.

the image blasted at the speed of light onto your retina is TWO DIMENSIONAL!!!

IT IS MERELY a 2d representation of what the 3d world looks like.

THEREFORE

the real world is only TWO! not 1, not 3, not 4

but TWO dimensions

Hmm....
but surely, the world could have X dimensions, we just interact in the 3rd dimension.

Look at it like this, if a 3D object came into a 2D world... what would it look like? Take a sphere for example, that'd look like a circle...

Ok then, what about a 4D object into our 3D world? Perhaps any of the objects you have lying on your desk are infact interacting in the 4th dimension, only we can see them only in the 3rd dimension as a limitation of humans.

I think everybody has realised this, as it is a display on a flat screen, it is going to be in two dimensions, its like drawing a cube on paper, it look 2D but is 3D, same for movies, TV and photographs, its common sense, heck its more than common sense.

And well, to be a stuck up nerd that is literal about everything (Okay I'm not one of those, nerds are smart for a start, but I'm taking that role) technically it is 3D (not because of what pincho said) because we live in a 3 dimensional universal, everything is 3D, somethings appear 2D, when infact they have width, height and depth, even if the depth makes it look 2D...

Now to end the stuck up-ness

Yey! I removed the sig...

its not the correct size gorf 600 x 120 max in both 2d dimensions.

i cant wait untill the actual 3d holligraphic screens come out.

i have been hearing this idea for a while now. I dont think you need to be an expert to convinse me of that idea but...

FINE YOU CONVINSED ME! I GIVE UP! i have no further arguments about this theory. this theory is just UNARGUABLE!

X/Y and Time give you animated sprites...

Thank you.. Lol.

As For The Rest:
I have come up with a re-new theory (oh and dont mind that computers expert thing, I am, but its not approved yet.)

And It is: Through computers, you can create, edit and basically do whatever you want with 3d, but since its on a pc screen (flat or not) its considered a 2d representation of 3d work. Im not saying 3d Is impossible,(even more convinced after hearing the holographic screens are comin out.) but its more like, hey this is the 2d representation of my model (not a blue print!) wanna see it in 3d? *The user then shows off his (so called) 3d models by rotating it on the various axis.

Try looking at a screenshot of your model..... See? Its not exactly 3d,its 3d rendering (if even if you didnt do any rendering work.)

It might be obvious, but once again, some people jut never realise it . Any Questions?

EDIT: One More thing! If any modeller has an animator built-in it (maya,ms3d,3dsmax,etc) then its considered 4D. My third theory

I'm sorry dude, but what we're saying is that it is obvious. Some people have even attempted writing their own (very slow and ugly) 3d engines in DB using only the pixel drawing commands. You might not have been exposed though since you say you're an artist.

You're a very friendly person btw.

No, X, Y, and Time gives you an image that exists at some point in time. Everything (that exists) has 4 dimensions.

3D is represented to us via differences in what the left and right eye see. With a computer monitor, both eyes see the same thing, however put on some 3D specs, and you have 3D.

Even on a photograph of a flat piece of paper, still 3D, because your eyes percieve it as such.

So you can make you monitor 3D with some coloured Quality Street wrappers, before very long, all monitors will be 3D, and it won't cost that much more either - as long as you consider 3D as the ability to distinguish non flat shapes on a flat display - not see around them and crud like that.

David T actually made a 3D camera demo in DBPro, using sprites and restricted palettes he was able to make those 3D pop out displays.

At the end of the day, everything we see is flat, it's just that our eyes can tell the difference between 2 flat images and decipher them into 3D.

How about a theory that I argued out with a guy in HS (over 6 years ago already ):

Time does not really exist. It's merely a measurement made up by man.

You're all wrong. The image is 3D! If you turn your head to look slightly right so your left eye is closer to the screen than your right eye, you've added depth to the image, therefore it's 2D.

Who wants to touch me?!?!? I said who want's to touch me?!?!?

What we percieve time to be certainly exists. You could say that meters and yards don't exist by that logic. It is a quantifiable measurement of something real in a way that we understand, can record, and can relate.

Time isn't a quantifiable measurement though. I mean, just last night I was out drinking then work up this morning and about 12 hours had past in and instant. How is that quantifiable?!?!

As a self-proclaimed computer expert, I too have come up with a completely unique and original theory related to the science of computers, or as you mere mortals call it, "computer science." *gasp*, mortals

if you tie a string to each of your teeth, fingers, and other extremities, you will look like a complete fool. But attach those strings to a complex stick system to tap on the keys of your keyboard, and you will have in turn created a system of typing wherein your fingers have no direct physical connection to said keyboard! You could type out a series of letters and even numbers, a series that I will call a STRING of characters, to your liking. From now on, let's just associate said strings with the $ symbol just to make it simpler for you less-initated underlings. The second part of my theory is that for every action on said keyboard, their is an equal and even reaction on the screen. Incredible, huh? I call all of this STRING THEORY, a completely original and unique term which I invented all by myself just moments ago. If any of you try to steal my awesome theories, I'll sue you into the ground and unleash my minions on your pets quake in my nerd fury!

Well the actual truth is that 3D graphics just don't have a better name. There are other things that you are not questioning....

Are they moving? No.. the movement is an optical illusion.

So do they have X/Y movement? No, so are they 2 dimensional then?

They are made from photons so do they even exist at all?
