Yup, in less than 2 weeks I am going to be hitting Baltimore, NYC and Washington D.C for 8 days. Should be pretty awsome, anyone from those places have something specific to recommend that I should check out?

Don't live there but I've been there so...

Hit up the Smithsonian in Washington, i know i know "oh noez museums" but it's really cool, and theres a museum for every taste you may have. Baltimore had nothing really to do when I was there, but you may find something you like. Really all I saw in the Baltimore DC area was a huge chunk of history stuff, and if you venture further south to virginia, theres more history junk.

I suggest the Holocaust Museum. That's one big wad of interesting history, right there.

Congrats. You've now managed to visit a part of the world that's on your doorstep.

You could try somewhere farther afield. Like Slough or Milton Keynes, for example.

I hear Washington has a good museum of flight. Enjoy your trip.

Well too bad Mr.Rock, here I come. Bwahahah.

Most excited about NYC I must admit. There's a 60% chance I'll die according to sources on this forum, which is what makes it exciting. Right?

It's a very nice place, I felt totally safe when I was there. Enjoy it! Make sure you go to a steakhouse - the portions are mental, but the experience will stick with you for the rest of your life.

Why would I have a problem with you visiting NYC? Please do! And since you live in Toronto, I imagine (if you're going by car) you'll be passing through Binghamton, so stop into a restaurant while you're here and try a "spiedie." If you like chicken, you'll thank me for it Don't eat the pizza in NYC... if you do, you'll hate the pizza in Toronto when you go back unless you don't like pizza, in which case "eh," do what you will. My main bits of advice while visiting the big apple:

1. Don't open a map. Just trust me on that.
2. Don't give money to bums. I know how everyone will think that goes against my every principal, and I know how selfish and silly it may sound... but I also know at least four people who've been mugged while trying to be generous, so just take my word for it.
3. Take Cattle's advice... If you like Steak, go to Peter Luger's Steakhouse in Brooklyn (I didn't even know they had one in queens!). But a word of caution, I find their sauce to be a bit too spicy, but no one else apparently thinks that (of my friends/ family anyway), so maybe I'm just weird (no one say it!). Also check out Grimaldi's pizza in Brooklyn, I like it. I haven't eaten there in a while and now that I said that I might need to go get some lol.
4. DON'T GO TO PORT AUTHORITY. 'Nuff said.

Honestly, you're risking your life a heck of a lot more by visiting Baltimore. Keep your windows up, your doors locked, a pistol in your glove box, and don't stop at red-lights 9 out of 10 New Yorkers don't feel safe in Baltimore (not a real statistic but very possible lol). But seriously, my only impressions of Baltimore have been from watching HBO's "The Wire," so I'm probably way off in saying how dangerous it is... I've only ever been there once and I was too young to really remember it.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy your trip, stay safe, and remember my grandfather's age-old advice, "if it's east of Coney island, it isn't worth seeing"

Here I am just trying to offer advice and stuff and you have to go and open up an arguement Fine, if you insist...

No, I get my impressions of most places from actually going there. Yes, I insulted Texas and the South, but YES, I apologized repeatedly for it, and it didn't even really warrant an apology because you and two others misread what I said about it anyway. Here we go, once again: I'm sorry for saying that I wouldn't be surprised if I saw that sign in the south or in Texas, even though it's rediculous that I should have to apologize seeing as how you didn't even attempt to understand what I was saying, nor did you attempt to use common sense when you picked your silly fight. Seeing as how they still fly the confederate flag all throughout the south to this very day (and lets face it, you guys lost the war, too friggin' bad), and when I was down there I saw it in dozens of stores and whatnot, no, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw it down there, it wouldn't shock me or even disturb me. you want to argue with me about it, you want to rip me for what I just said, then you have two choices: e-mail me about it or shut up already. Don't hijack every thread I post in because I haven't apologized for the 800th time yet. I'm done apologizing and now I'm just getting annoyed with it. For the past month that's all you ever talk about with me. I don't have a problem with you and I never did, but if you have one with me (and you apparently do), you can either e-mail me or cram it where the southern sun don't shine

Sorry guys, but Cash has brought that up so many times my eyes are dry from reading it all. Some people e-mail me when they get angry, I guess others harass me until I throw myself off a bridge Besides, I can't get impressions of anywhere else from watching the Wire, the whole thing takes place in Baltimore And I don't think I ever said "everyone in New Jersey is a mafioso" because I saw it on the Sopranos. Why? Because I've (unfortunately) been to New Jersey. This is the part where someone from NJ gets hostile

Wow, you're sensitive. I'm not mad about anything. I'm just making an observation, based on things that you say. I wasn't even talking about that Texas thing, but hey, whatever.

Quote: "Here we go, once again: I'm sorry for saying that I wouldn't be surprised if I saw that sign in the south or in Texas, even though it's rediculous that I should have to apologize seeing as how you didn't even attempt to understand what I was saying, nor did you attempt to use common sense when you picked your silly fight."

Well, like I said, I'm not mad. But may I critique this apology? It sucks. You start off apologizing, then end up insulting. Hey, cool, I guess that's just your personality.

Quote: "(and lets face it, you guys lost the war, too friggin' bad)
"

Wow, that's just not relevant or necessary. Or remotely appropriate, considering the subject matter.

Quote: "e-mail me about it or shut up already"

I usually do e-mail people in a situation like this, but there's no point in arguing with you. You're a smart guy, but you won't budge, no matter how ridiculous your position. Thus, I post here.

Quote: "For the past month that's all you ever talk about with me. "

Simply untrue.

Quote: "I don't have a problem with you and I never did, but if you have one with me (and you apparently do), you can either e-mail me or cram it where the southern sun don't shine "

Ummm... thanks.

Quote: "Besides, I can't get impressions of anywhere else from watching the Wire, the whole thing takes place in Baltimore "

I'm sure you watch other shows too.

Matt, I don't have a problem with you. You seem okay. You do say some asinine things some times. Then you won't relent. You're extreme, and often uninformed. And you're inflammatory. In your post above, you insulted me several more times. Why do we need that? Because you can't handle me commenting on your loose canon opinions? Just like that whole dumb walkthrough issue. I'm giving you a hard time about that because you make yourself such an easy target with the things you say. My advice to you is simply to calm down when you post. You don't have to call people 'spineless' and 'worthless', and other such fun feel good names, for dumb reasons.

I promise, if I had a problem with you, I'd make it known. Have you ever seen me hold back with Raven or Red Oktober? Just don't be so sensitive, and recognize that you're wrong sometimes.

Sorry Megaton!

I'm sorry as well Megaton!

When you said that I instantly thought you were bringing up the sign thing again, because it has come up a lot in the past month. I ended it in an insulting way because it feels like no matter how many times I apologize about that it's never good enough. And I wasn't saying anything in this thread controversial or explosive or over-the-top and it bothered me when it looked like you were trying to turn it into a fight. Yes, I'm pretty radical at times, but not *always*. I do try my best to offer any help I can on these forums, I try to contribute as often as I can. But in geek culture it's a constant war... me against everyone else, almost always. Usually I'm on one side of a debate and everyone else is on the other, and it's extremely overwhelming sometimes. But I buckle down and get into it, usually trying to post the arguements of the entire unspoken-for group of people in my posts, and that's where the trouble comes in. I usually come across as overly-sensitive because I'm often the only person taking one side of a debate (in fact I can't think of any time I wasn't on one side against the TGC firing squad). And I seriously don't try to get into these fights, they just happen. I'm not going to pretend I like xbox when I've always been a hardcore Sony fanboy just to avoid a debate In political debates, usually CR agrees with me and everyone else thinks I'm an idiot, and there's nothing more frustrating than that lol. So that's why I'm "sensational" and explosive and stuff. Sorry for that. And sorry for the mean reply I posted in the walkthrough arguement a few minutes ago while you were posting here I've been particularly cranky lately because I'm just fed up with always being the butt-end of every joke, lol. "Uh oh, Matt's going to have something to say about this one!" <-- stuff like that keeps popping up, and I'm not THAT bad am I?

Again Megaton, sorry for all this.

BTW, visit Philly if you get the chance... it's near DC and Baltimore, sort of. Of the big northeast cities to visit I think that's noteworthy. Take a walk down South Street, it's gorgeous this time of year

Yeah, that can be quite annoying. People should know the source of words and phrases ...

Mortal, meaning 'Unrelenting and Deadly' (not 'subject to death')
And combat meaning fighting.

I wrote a track once called Event Horizon. The amount of people who said "Why did you steal that name from the film?". Muppets. It's a phenominon/characteristic of a blackhole. The film took it from that.

And the amount of people who hear some classical music and go "Oh yeah, that was from Appocolypse Now", for example. No, it's bloody Wagner. He was real. They used it in Appocolypse Now.

Good luck Megs btw, even though I am planning on coming there to kill you.

You're going to come to NY to kill him? Why not just do it in Toronto? If you're far away it's about the same travel time

As long as Meg doesn't end up in Camden he'll be fine, I bet. Just don't be silly and do something dumb, like go out for a walk alone really late at night. I dunno... I feel safe in NYC and I don't see what all of the fuss is about, although I've spent half of my life or more there so who knows, maybe I just don't see what others do or something because I'm used to it?

Eh, you guys are monkeys.

I don't really believe in city generalization. It seriously IS very hard to predict how dangerous a city is just by watching the news or looking at statistics, because you'll still get mugged in any city if you walk up to groups of people and act like an ass*hole.

It's very true. The only time I ever really, honestly felt un-safe was actually in Wyoming. This girl at a restaurant said something to the effect of "you talk funny" and I said "I live in New York" and for whatever reason everyone in the restaurant was staring at me for the rest of my meal... I very much didn't feel safe. I felt like some kind of circus freak lol. To this day I don't understand why they were all staring at me like that... had they never seen someone from outside of their little crappy town? Did I have something on my chin? UGH! I almost want to drive back out there just to ask lol. My mom thinks they were probably expecting me to hold the place up, because that's how people generalize my whole friggin' state, as a bunch of criminals

Yeah, not a good example to follow at all. There are people who lead much more difficult and demanding lives in 3rd world countries, live in cities with high crime rates, poor government, and lack of employment support. Etc,

Using biased logic, you could say these people are 10 times tougher then any New Yorker. See my point?

of course they are, New York isnt all that bad... I dont see why people are all scared of it. Any citizen of Ethiopia has it crappier than any of the USA. Most any other country actually, though there are some below it on the Human Development Index.

I think it's just the thought of 11 million + people being crammed into a space not really suited for a million, I think that's what scares people. NYC has always had this illusion of being a scary place, and when I was a kid and Dinkins was mayor it really was a pretty horrible place (but that's what you get when you let some jerk from New Jersey run the city ). There was this cool special on the Discovery Times Channel about the NYPD last year where they talked about the association between fear and the Big Apple, and some psychology person said something to the effect of people thinking NYC is a dangerous place because it was the place where most of the country's immigrants came from, and people were afraid of going to a new world, and crime was rampant... and somehow that's still imbeded in people. I think that's total crap lol, how many people actually know who their ancestors in the early 1800's were? I'm betting it isn't many, and I don't believe that things like that can be imbeded in a person, but hey, I'm no scientist

Good luck Megaton,
I've never been the NewYork and can't really find it on a map. But I feel left out of this thread so I'm going to give you some advice based on TV, stereotypes and halusanations.

1) Whatch out for Hillbillies, I hear theres alot of them down there. Apparently their like Hosers with shotguns.

2) Don't drink the beer I hear it's terrible.

3) All african-americans are just misunderstood, even tough one might be trying to hijack your car.

4) It's OK to be gay there, so if you or a freind feels like comming out, this would be the time to do it.

5) The electric chair is an americans idea of fun. Don't turn your back on any of them or they'll strap you in.

I truly hope you come back in one peice.

yep, mostly wannabes though
Quote: "2) Don't drink the beer I hear it's terrible."
uh, you have plenty of choices down here
Quote: "3) All african-americans are just misunderstood, even tough one might be trying to hijack your car."
that was only slightly racist

if by "OK" you mean legal, sure, but if you mean socially acceptable, then no (unless youre in the cities, which i think you will be.)

Dont be silly, they said that was inhumane, we use a needle now, but theres a big viewing window.

What, so if someone is carjacking you he needs to be black? Man, you need to stop watching television.

Most of the country hates gay people. That was proven by the 2004 election. And this is the part where I'm lynched for saying most of America is homophobic, even though it's a fact. And if we WERE ok with being gay in the US, what's the problem with that? They should have the same right to lose 50% of their earnings as the rest of the population, imo.

Hey, not all of us support the death penalty. Some of us *know* it's total crap.

You'll enjoy america Megaton. Where else can you get a cheeseburger with FOUR all-beef patties piled atop each other (like the BK stacker)? Where else can you sue a fast food chain for "making" you fat? America is the land of the free and the home of the brave, so long as you aren't trying to be free by bravely sneaking over a border It's a nation where you can become the President even with a "C" average in college and a former drug habit while dodging the draft... even former B-role movie stars can achieve such stature! lol but in all seriousness, I hope your trip goes well. I mean, you live in Toronto, how much different can the US possibly be?

A Matt Rock fact is actually an opinion. Fundamental groups are homophobic. America is becoming much more tolerant. Lots of people just don't care if other people are gay. I don't care if people are gay, it doesn't affect me in the slightest. They can get married, buy houses, whatever. People just need to stop being morons.
