Quite a bit of vapor activity on (and over) Mount St. Helens today.

I've made a small animation.

Enjoy.

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

Err, I live right next to it, it isnt likely to blow says the guys who study volcanoes. Its lava dome will continue to grow for about 3-4 years, and then it will explode. We better worry about Yellowstone though.....

edit: Plus your talking about Washington, one of the rainiest places I know of=P (Quite comparable to england perhaps..lots of dreary weather)

I'm with Steve here, not enough people know about the Caldera at Yellowstone, and more people need to be informed about that. If that puppy explodes, it will have a global impact that will effect global economies and the governmental, social, and economic stability of the United States... in a nutshell, it would be the worst natural disaster in recorded history, effecting billions of people around the world. Ice ages tend to do that If you guys don't know about Yellowstone's volcano yet, go learn about it. Now.

You don't need to know anything about Yellowstone. If it happens, you probably still won't know anything about it.

Of course you're all assuming it's a caldera, and not an ancient alien landing site

Most people who get the Discovery (or Science) Channel know this, it's on at least once a month.

That's not as bad as you think you said.

Wow, good thing I'm not near enough to be worried too much about a volcanoe. But this place is the rainiest places I've been to. Then again, I should leave the western states some time. (Cali, Oregon, Idaho)

If you live in Seattle, then I would worry. Reiner is a super volcano, just like the one in Yellowstone, and if it blows it will fill the entire Seattle region, because it is in a valley. Yay for the Pacific Volcano ring!

It isnt. The reality of it all is that carbon dioxide is caused by global warming. More closely, it is probably a trend. We are probably close to a new ice age, and experiencing the rise before the fall. (Like a wave) Infact, Washington just got one of the coldest winters in 2 years I think, and a blizzard.

Yeah, Discovery are all over it for ages. Personally I watched it on the top 10 volcanoes. Isn't it the biggest in the world or somesuch (and nobody noticed it until they took photos from a plane or something like that)?

Cheers

Interestingly enough, global warming has caused an overall rise in the Earth's temperature, and apparently a massive eruption from one of the previously mentioned caldera's would cause a drop of several degrees in temperature. Seems like the perfect counter-measure for global warming, I vote to set it off intentionally... sure, they reckon it will wipe out most of North America, but sacrifices have to be made!

Apparently there is a big fault line in St.Louis, the news was going on and on about it about a year ago how only like a few hundred buildings in St.Louis where earth quake ready etc etc etc....

also;

...try again. Global Warming is caused by carbon dioxide, it makes less than no sense the other way around.

I know there's this whole does it exist/doesn't it and so on debate, but does anyone think that the argument is just really unhelpful? The scientists that claim it doesn't exist surely still think we should switch to renewable energy don't they?

I just think it's funny, whether you believe that global warming is true or not, everyone must realize that pumping loads and loads of waste gases etc into the atmosphere must at least be unhealthy for humans, so why people are still opposing environmental changes is beyond me.

No doubt. But a worldwide average rise in temperature of 1 to 2 degrees over 100 years is absolutely nothing. Given another hundred years that average may drop 3 or 4 degrees. After all, we don't know what the average has been for the last 4000 years. Who's to say it wasn't hotter back then, maybe we are in a state of global cooling and it's finally getting back up to temperature?

But isn't it quite likely that pumping gases into the air accelerates that unnaturally? Sure, it was gonna happen anyway, but if it took longer, would there not be more time for low lying countries to build up dams and dikes to stop thousands of people from drowning?

Are they doing it now? Nope. Will they be more prepared in 5 years time than they are now? Nope. How about 10? No again.
The thing about global warming is even "if" humans are accelerating it unnaturally right now, there are many single NATURAL events that could have more of an impact than what we have contributed to the process in the history of the human race.
I agree that we should be more "green". But more for the sake of our oceans and wild-life than the temperature of our planet.

A few million years ago, global warming occured. It caused a rapid rise in temp thanks to methane gas previously not there (hidden below ice), to rise. How are you to say the same cant have happened with Co?

Ouch.. That's it I'm not buying any more vegemite or watching another Crocodile Dundee movie.

As for fault lines, there is one here. several years ago we had the "biggest" earthquake ever recorded in my area, my band was practicing and I thought I hit a really sweet chord when it happened . Was not till I read the paper the next day I even knew it was an earthquake. Guess I was giving Mesa Boogie to much credit.

millions of years ago != a discussion about evolution.

Broad readings like that would make it impossible to discuss anything on the board because in some abstract way it could be equated to something against the AUP. Lighten up.

I don't know that it's anything like Yellowstone, but it would definitely devistate the Pacific Northwest area. I think it was NGC that said it would rock everything from Northern BC to Northern California, blanketing everything in ash and wrecking some percentage of the US's economy for a couple of years... bad stuff, but I don't know if it would quite have the global impact of Yellowstone. Discovery and NGC both painted a pretty grim picture... ice age, aftershocks in the middle of the Atlantic, tsunamis around the world, famine, pestilence... you know, all the worst parts of the bible

Quote: "omgz its teh globalz warmingz!!!!!!1111one11!"

Everyone discussing Global Warming should see the movie "An Inconvenient Truth." It's got all of the actual scientific facts about Global Warming that anyone could ever need. And they do show the alleged "global warming" that happened in the past, but it's nothing compared to what's happening now. A lot of people refuse to watch that movie because they think it has some political message... it doesn't. Go rent it, I beg all of you.

well despite your rather spurious date calculations the fact still stands that CO2 wasn't created by global warming, It makes no sense that a naturally occurring gas is produced by an implied phenomenon.

Read what you wrote, and try again.

Wow, thanks for not taking implied meanings. It is a result of global warming I should say. The same way in which a few million years ago, a trend occured. It got slightly hot enough to melt some of the ice (perhaps like now), and caused a huge rise in Methane (C02 now), which killed animals, plants, ect. And rose temps more. I am saying that Global Warming, started as a similar trend. It was cold, and it is getting warmer/normal, but in doing so, it causes ice sheets to melt, which lets trapped gases escape. In this case, I am saying it is C02. Good enough explanation?
