Unless you first dab the sword in some sort of liquid and then use said liquid to write whatever it is you need to write onto a piece of paper. What liquids do swords commonly come into contact with? I forget, but I presume that one could use any sort of liquid, most likely in congealed form, to write down whatever they needed to.
