only the one LED lights up still, no alternation, could it be because of the capacitor not working correctly? I have two though and have switched them out...

It could be because you didn't page

[EDIT] Also try using a larger capacitor. Currently you have 10k and 100nF which means the LED would blink at over 500 Hz. Your eye can't see that.

but you were post 50...

Hmm this is oddbin tbh it should be working already...

Time for night rest and try again tomorrow... I suspect those capacitors are not working, but I cannot test them to be sure...

EDIT

One thing to note, I think I may have been given the wrong resistors, as he book mentions completely different marking codes...

http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/LM/LM555.pdf

Page 5 Figure 7 is a rough diagram for you to choose a suitable capacitor and resistor based on the target frequency you want. Since you're talking about seeing things blink, this frequency is going to be under 50 Hz or the human eye will not see it.

I suggest a 1uF capacitor and about 100k resistor (that is, your 10k should be replaced by a 100k and your 1k should be replaced by a 10k).

Page 7 gives you the exact formula for frequency calculation, which should be:

1/((RA + 2*RB) * C * ln(2))

If we plug in the values you chose for your circuit, you get 1.2kHz. That's not visible to the human eye and will be perceived as a constant light source.

Eve if it is supposed to alternate between the two LEDs?

No idea.

EDIT: WOW changing the number of messages per page makes a huge difference to the number of pages! I changed to 50 from the default 40 and the number of pages went from 1075 to 860!! Needless to say I prefer the default and changed it back, but still...

The Posting Competition has 50 posts per page. People can only claim pages every 50 posts. This ancient rule was put in place millenniums ago by the powers that be in order to protect mere mortals from the page patriarchy.

So I've discovered why people hate using Java for UIs and stuff. It's verbose and can be incredibly complicated. It's like C++ RTTI but it's used in everything. If you only get a reference to a generic Object, you have to make sure it's the right class or you get an exception and your stack is all messed up.

It can get downright pedantic:

Of course, I'm relatively new to Java so I might be doing this wrong. *shrug*

Generally, if you ever find yourself trying to identify the class type of an object in OOP, you're doing something wrong.

If I don't, then I can't do any type of UI event handling. Every Swing callback/delegate/listener object takes a special event class that only holds a generic java.lang.Object reference. And since a UI element, especially a JPanel, can propagate events from multiple elements that are different I have to check which UI element the event is coming from. I suppose I could have a specific listener for each element and force certain assumptions on the event arguments but that is just as much code if not more.

It's just bleh. I'm open to suggestions though as I have to maintain this application and I'd like to make it as painless as possible.

I'd need to see more code, but shouldn't you be handling the event in the class it belongs to? Then there would be no need to know what type of class it is because you're already in it.

Sometimes I really hate my job.

Last night, there was an incident at a register with a customer. She kept insisting that a promotional paper (in which it stated that it would print a $10 coupon with her receipt to use on her NEXT order) was a coupon, and kept demanding that the "$10 credit" be "applied" to her purchase. I very calmly and politely pointed out to her that what she had was essentially an ad, promising that as long as she spent a certain amount in her current purchase, when her receipt printed a $10 coupon would follow. She didn't understand, and was holding up the line. The cashier pretty much didn't know what to say, so I had to speak quite a bit. Finally I lost my cool a little bit (because I had explained it to her every way imaginable), and she demanded our manager on duty. Finally, he showed up, and told her the same exact thing, only for some reason THEN she acted like she understood. She wrote her check, then immediately went back to demanding the $10 off that purchase, even though she had already written the check...

She was there for about 20 minutes until they finally got her to understand, then when the coupon printed she went back around the store buying more stuff....

I still don't know how they got her to understand...

@Dar13

You're doing a lot of redundant checks. Firstly, you don't have to check the class type because the object can identify itself through inheritance. Secondly, event.getSource() returns an object which can be directly compared to other objects. Improved version:

Also note Java coding conventions specify the following:
* Class names always begin with capital letters and are camel case (no underscores).
* Object names, method names and variable names always begin with a non-capital letter and are camel case (no underscores).

That'll work for the majority of my cases I suppose. I would need to hold the references to those UI elements but I do that anyways for the most part. I guess I was just a little too afraid of incurring an InvalidClassException when I didn't even need to do that cast.

That was a simple code example, not an example of the coding standard used (especially for that class name). And since Java is a C-like language, it's better for me to use the C/C++ conventions already defined by my company/project/boss than change them entirely since we rarely use Java in the first place. So my hands are kinda tied on that one.

My friend says, if you don't want to hold a reference to each object you can also use anonymous classes:

Since ActionListener is an interface, you can implement it directly.

Java programmers will run away screaming if they see code like that, according to my friend

Which part is so horrifying? The naming style? Or the redundancy? I'll see if I can scrub an example file enough to show you some realish code.

As for the anonymous classes, I need to keep the references anyways because I need to pull data from them when a user uses another menu. So anonymous classes wouldn't help that much though I do use them when appropriate.

So far my best experience with making UIs has been using C# and WPF... Gives you a UI designer and .NET... Which I've used to integrate with C++ one time when I was making a mini level editor. Of course .Net is really best for windows platforms. Go Java swing if you want to be multi-platform.

I've mostly found myself using Java in FRC, programming robots in my team. As well as when I took AP Comp Sci way back when.

And now I find myself back in C++ with Unreal Engine 4...

Oh and Dar13 I think TheComet was referring to the naming conventions Really I think in any OOP language you want to eliminate redundancy as much as possible... (making code re-usable via polymorphism) Although with naming I always find myself breaking the rules on that one

You handled that all wrong. I have learned to follow the "customer is always right" philosophy, but I also believe it is tongue-in-cheek (which is the only way we can get back at annoying customers ) and really means the customer always THINKS they are right and will kick up a fuss and waste your time if you argue with them. I would have just printed the coupon and scanned it there and then (or if that is not possible, credit her with the $10 and stick the coupon in the till with a note explaining the situation). Then if you explained to her that normally she would just get the coupon for her NEXT shop I'm sure she would be in "listening mode".

When people are angry or feel they are being scammed they wont listen to reason, they have to calm down first. I once had a woman on the phone who was really rude, I asked to call her back when I had tried to fix her problem and when I called her back she was very apologetic.

It's not worth the hassle to stick rigidly to the rules. What good does it do anyone to hold up business for twenty minutes trying to explain a needlessly complicated marketing ploy? I have never heard of getting a coupon for paying a certain amount to use NEXT time you pay a certain amount. Sticking to the letter of policy doesn't help the company in a lot of situations. Maybe you are not in a senior enough position to make those calls though. If not then call your manager as soon as someone starts wasting your time.
