Hi all,

Just popping in to clear a few things up, it was a joint decision by TGC to remove the mod status, we are not upset with Clonkex as a community member if we did we could have just banned him rather than just remove his mod status. I want to be clear we certainly don't have an issue with anyone talking about "competitors" products, even though we don't count Unity/Unreal as a direct competitor, TGC has always allowed free discussion on gaming/development news on the off-topic boards and this won't change. The fact that Unity/Unreal has gone free is an amazing step forward for helping more people get into game development and something to be celebrated.

Clonkex was told when he was made a mod it was as a trial thing to watch over this thread in-particular, as part of that we have been watching him as we do with all new mods.

The decision was made to remove his mod status for what some saw as a unprofessional actions around the forums and also abuse of mod abilities, for example flagging his own post as offensive.

All mods have been told this but TGC are trying very hard to create a professional and customer focused image from their moderators and support staff with new products launching on Steam and it was felt it was best to end Clonkex's trial period to avoid issues that some saw may arise in the future. There has been a refresh of the mods on the GameGuru forums and many old mods were removed, please don't take this personally many have had roles changed or have been contacted to change things they are doing.

All the best
Jason

What about Page? Can I have that?

Clonkex, don't be too hard on yourself there buddy. These things happen, I've seen mods come and go here before. Honestly I'd probably feel relieved, you don't have to worry about being responsible for much anymore!

Er so the moderators posting all that nonsense in that locked thread a while back wasn't unprofessional?

@Seditious

Kindly link me and we will have a look for sure, we can't see everything, a thread marked as offensive sure does stand out though. We don't single anyone out.

Please remember however that decisions like this are not up for debate, the decision was made by TGC staff and is final.

Good, 'cuz you'd be failing if you were competing directly with those giants!

A trial? Oh wait, yeah I guess you did say that... kinda forgot... then again I guess I assumed I was past the "being watched" stage

Quote: "The decision was made to remove his mod status for what some saw as a unprofessional actions around the forums"

Not to cause more trouble, but I genuinely want to know what I did wrong. Would it possible to link the specific posts/threads? Even if in PM.

Quote: "and also abuse of mod abilities, for example flagging his own post as offensive."

That was once and only because I wanted to draw attention to the news, not my thread. I was overly excited. I honestly didn't realise it was such a big deal because this thread is marked the same way. Admittedly if I'd realised that thread was created by Rick himself I might have thought twice, but I didn't notice...

I'm annoyed with myself, now. If I'd realised we as mods were supposed to be aiding the professional image of TGC (it seems so very obvious in hind sight...) I would have been much, much more careful with everything I did. I have a nasty habit of not realising the importance of stuff until it's too late. Rather annoying, to say the least. I mean, if I'd just watched my own actions more carefully I would still be a mod (probably)!

Additionally, I've just realised I owe TGC an apology as well. You may have removed my mod status once I did a couple of silly things, but I still did those things as a mod before you got to me. So I apologise for presenting a bad image for TGC while I was still a mod.

Quote: "Please remember however that decisions like this are not up for debate, the decision was made by TGC staff and is final."

We know We're just making sure we're all on the same page (given this is the post-comp: pun not intended) and that we all understand each other.

EDIT:

Quote: "Honestly I'd probably feel relieved, you don't have to worry about being responsible for much anymore!"

I'm torn between feeling that way and feeling slightly disappointed at losing the ability to approve noob-posts... they need to invent a semi-mod status for trusted users that somehow has some of the mod powers but not all That'd be awesome

@Those that PM'd me - all replied

EDIT2: All who participate in the Posting Competition must bow down and worship me, for through my foolish actions I have given this thread a greatly-needed boost towards the fabled 50,000-post mark. BOW DOWN, I SAY!

Makes sense, except that it doesn't seem that he was told first. Why not provide the opportunity to act differently before removing his mod abilities. It couldn't have been that much of a hurry could it ?

Alright, you want an honest answer; well here it is! No, I don't think you held the position very well. That's probably why you were my favorite mod! I really don't think it was just that thread that did you in. Overall, you failed to carry the professional demeanor that almost every mod here carries. Like Thraxas and I think BiggAdd were talking about, there has to be a change in the paradigm with which one behaves on the forums when they become a moderator. So many times while I was talking to you, I completely forgot that you were a mod. You just never did come across as a mod, so that necessary paradigm change didn't happen. That said, as you were indeed on your watch period (which was going to be a long one -- you became a mod with only a few members' promotion and a desperate situation [to save the Posting Competition]), you didn't need to make a very big mistake to get booted off of the team.

To continue being honest, I doubted the longevity of your moderator status for a long time. When you posted that thread the other day, I was probably the first one to predict that you would lose your position over it. Remember that first post I made in that thread? That was my kind way of saying that you had gone too far. A few posts ago, you explained how you were promoting the news and not your thread, which seems totally legit. Unfortunately, it doesn't come across that way at first.

At first, I disagreed with your demotion. But to be honest, while I wouldn't have personally chosen to boot you off the team, I see exactly why TGC did.

So that's the honest truth of how I saw things; I hope you are right in saying that you don't offend easily.

Also I would imagine TGC wasn't thrilled that you posted pictures of the tools they use as moderators. That was probably one of the "abuses of power" as The Next put it.

But rest assured Clonkex, we all still love you. You're a great member of these forums and you're friendly!

That was my goal, actually. I didn't want to seem like a mod. Maybe it was stupid if I wanted to keep my position, but there was no way I was going to change my everyday posting behaviour (you know, my Land Rover posts, my random post-comp posts, my multicopter posts) just because I was a mod. I wore two different hats: my everyday hat, where I behaved just like a normal community member; and my mod hat, where I was serious and kept iffy posts in check.

Quote: "I doubted the longevity of your moderator status for a long time."

As did I, if I'm honest.

Quote: "Remember that first post I made in that thread? That was my kind way of saying that you had gone too far."

I never would have guessed that because I was totally blind to how everyone else saw the thread.

As do I.

Thank you, it was very helpful

Of course I'm right. I'm always right.

They might not have been. Hang on... well, they haven't removed the images yet, so... guess they mustn't care that much. That or they don't want to be too controlling and decided it might seem too much to start editing my posts as well...

Quote: "That was probably one of the "abuses of power" as The Next put it."

Oh, I suppose it could have been. Didn't think of that.

(Just in case someone reading this doesn't know and thinks I'm being serious, "Half-Life 3 confirmed" is an ongoing joke across the internet, usually mentioned in relation to some rumour about Valve)

Let me see... was I 18? Or 19? Either way I'll be 20 on Sunday. Gotta book that driving test for my black license!

This forum was a lot less serious back then. This is what I wanted it to be like when I became a mod, where the mods powers weren't some great secret. Ah, I really have to stop talking about this; probably getting on everyone's nerves by now!

The forum was also a lot quieter and TGC wasn't as well know back then (I'm pretty sure).

As The Next has said, there is a big push to change the way mods are viewed and TGC is viewed. So:

I've noticed something: the forum has been loud today! Probably surrounding the loss of a mod, but today's probably seen three or four times the posting volume of an average day.

Yeah, this is the most activity I've seen in several weeks.

If only it would stay this active! Be more interesting, everyone, that's an order!

In other news I restarted Skyrim, became a Dark Elf, and am focusing on using nothing but swords/axes/daggers/arrows and light armor, and am joining the Imperial Legion, just to be a jerk to the Stormcloaks because they whine a tad too much.

Also I'm going to build up a reputation of being a great guy, always helping everyone, and then just when everyone thinks they have me figured BAM!, I shall do the Thieves Guilde questline, and if that isn't bad enough then I'll do the Assasin's Guild line... hahahahaha

Then I'll do the main quest, save everyone from Alduin, and hide out in a cave somewhere until I'm strong enough to go into Whiterun and kill everyone and break the game...

Haven't been here for ages since my internet hasn't been working! What's new?

I noticed the post a few pages back about the Mega Mac. I have a challenge people. Go to maccas where a Mega Mac is available, and ask "Can I have a Mega Mac with 3-1?" (pronounced 'Three to One'). It'll cost you about $20 AU for the small meal lol. Just do it it's worth it for the story

Probably, it feels like longer.

Quote: "TGC wasn't as well know back then (I'm pretty sure)."

In my view it's fluctuated. TGC started out not very well-known, but by about 2004 DarkBASIC had become reasonably well-known, and FPSC was on the horizon. By 2006, DarkBASIC Professional was extremely popular and FPSC was doing well. By 2008 DBPro was fully mature and maintaining popularity, and FPSC was just about reaching maturity through the community's effort. In the last couple of years it feels like TGC has gone on a nasty down-slope of popularity. Hopefully Reloa- err- GameGuru will help things pick up again

It was really weird. Not sure why my brain would do that to me.

Thinking about trying Unity 5 instead of using Unreal Engine, Unreal is great but honestly it feels very cluttered, plus Blueprints (while awesome) take a lot of screen real estate to manage and I don't want to program in C++.

I suppose I shall download Unity 5 and see what happens.

They're so... gooey. Does anyone else here pronounce 'GUI' as 'gooey'? I personally pronounce the letters, but my dad, a programmer for a rather large software company, has always called it a gooey.

American's say Gooey, everyone else seems to say G.U.I.

As long as you don't pronounce "URL" as "erl" we're fine.
