Welcome.. train yourself in the powers of normal map

Now i am sure this is gonna be the tutorial..

Make sure you have gimp version 2.4 or it dont work..
Download the normal map plugin from : http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/normalmap/.

Do not place the bin dll files in that folder place it in the normal
bin folder of gimp.

@Dark Jaguar Flame

Yeah well done, this is a good tutorial and the results in your final pic speak for themselves.

I hadn't tried using that shader on normal mapped entities before so I guess thats 1 problem out of the way and quite a big one at that.

However I've definately tried using that shader with a normal mapped segment and it fell over like when trying with the bump and bumpent shaders.

Have you tried this technique for segments yet and had any success (by success I mean seeing the kind of quality effect from your drums on floors, walls and ceilings for segments at the same time)?

I think you would be automatically pic of the month winner if you demonstrated a screenshot of those drums in a normal mapped segment with similar quality.

This is definately worthy of praise indeed though.

LOL. Neither do I. By drums I mean barrels.

Please post a pic. I tried this again with a segment and still had same issues.

Ok I've had a go with your tutorial except I used crazybump for the normal map instead of Gimp with the plugin.

It produced a good result especially when you pickup the barrel and move it around the light source although didn't quite nail it like you did. Maybe I should try Gimp.

Here is the same barrel and normal map in FPSC X10

The normal map appears to show up better in X10 and rendered smoother

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear more from you on the segment side of things.

Don't feel too bad about the segments. Unless someone releases a better shader than the stock bump.fx thats what tends to happen.

Anyway, following the success of getting some of these additional maps to work thanks to your tutorial, I made a specular map to go with the normal map I made earlier for my barrel.

I was pleased with the results. Whilst you've provided a good solution for improving FPSC X9 entities, it seems they've been able to do a better job with per pixel lighting when using normal and specular maps with FPSC X10 as the attached pic shows.

Nice tutorial, seems to be useful for many.

I'm surprised so few people knew about the bumpcubereflectalpha-trick, I've used it for pretty much all my X9-entities.

Nice work.

These do look very nice especially for FPSC X9.

If only this process could be used on segments. I guess thats kind of a problem though given the fact entities and lights need to be made dynamic for this to work.

You've done well here Dark Jaguar Flame. Now start working on segments and see if you can succeed where so many have failed (including myself)
