Quote: "Anyway, rifles are important in America. But handguns? I wish the founding fathers had been a little more specific when they drew up the constitution, it's a great idea that is rooted in practicality but has been so broadly interpreted that it has created a society where we don't feel safe without a deadly weapon. I wish everyone just had pepper spray, then if I drew on the wrong person neither of us would end up dead, just really pissed off."

Yes, but back then, most areas had a local militia, so everyone had one. Now, there aren't as many militias.

Hey guys, you can own a gun in the UK and do clay pigeon (and real pigeon!) shooting. I live in the countryside and shotgun shooting is quite common, the difference is in the ease of aquiring a gun, and more specifically live rounds. Also, in the cadets we were given rifles (I don't know what kind, they looked like SA80s), and normally used blanks when we were practicing section attacks and stuff, but occasionally we had live rounds for open ranges and stuff.

But, the main thing is we AREN'T allowed to take the law into our own hands! That's what the police do!

All these people saying there's no hunting in the UK are townies! There's plenty of hunting in the countryside.

Jeku, serious hunters and serious sport shooters would not be effected if they had the UK's gun laws in America (and it would seem that gun crime would go down, based on the evidence I have seen).

For the most part Americans aren't allowed either

I really can't speak for Americans as I don't have a clue what their gun laws are.

In Canada, half my dad's family were hunters and trappers for their living. My grandpa has had to hand over several of his rifles simply because their makes and models were used in a crime somewhere. This certainly affects "serious hunters".

I understand that gun possession is in our constitution but that doesn't make it right - America was a very different place when that was important. Now we need guns because everyone else has a gun. I don't feel safe in America."

How was it different? The right to bear arms is in the constitution to protect ourselves from invading forces and from local hostility. (Criminals, mobs, natives, hostile dissenters, etc...)

Sure it's easy to laugh and say "How can you protect yourself against an invasion with a little handgun". My concern isn't an invading force, it's the looters who are fleeing alongside you

If you ask me, the US and the UK have become nations of pacifists. I think if we took a harsher stance against crime, there'd be a lot less of it. Face it, the human race is not "nice", no matter how much you wish it were.

That really doesn't make much sense. They were arguing against handguns. They weren't laughing and saying "How can you protect yourself an invasion with a little handgun." It's not easy to laugh and say that at all actually. Handguns are just as deadly, but the purpose for handguns is even more deadly. Unless I'm reading your post incorrectly.

My point was that one of the reasons our founding fathers put that in the constitution in order for us to protect ourselves from an invasion force. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't happen. (Yes I know it wasn't brought up as a counter argument. I'm just thwarting the common counterargument)

Of course, there are more immediate uses for guns, such as protecting yourself from other citizens

I disagree with handguns and semi automatic guns, because from what I've seen, they have no use with hunting and are designed to kill other people. But then again, I know nothing about guns.
