If it's worth pointing out...Roomwar was one of the very few games were you weren't trying to kill/beat the alien, but rather he's a good guy.

Yellow- I think they were a bit stressed for time on this competition. The delayed the deadline and then Rich is going away cut short there judging time. Also they can't stop working on darkbasic pro all together. I've been around for alot of these competitions and it's rare that they have the time to write something for each game. Judging 60 games is not an easy task.

@QuothTheRaven
My game featured the alien as a young green good guy. You are also fighting evil ones which are red, but still...

I can look at the other entries and for the most part I see why they were picked. However, that does little to help me learn from this experience. It only helps me learn how to lower the quality and originality of my work next time so that it will be more readily accepted by the mainstream.

My game was quoted as "quirky" (I see it as creative) and "disorienting" (I see it as 'an intended feel and atmosphere'), which was intended, but they were stated like negatives in my review. This is the primary reason for my disappointment. I just don't see eye to eye with the judges is all. This is the conclusion I arrived upon.

Perhaps it was my error not to include the actual underlying purpose of the game- It is a trainer for improving your aim on FPS games. No, not a hack, I mean a little game that mimics many of the same decision trees one is faced with while playing a live FPS game. I assumed this would be blaringly obvious to anyone who played the game more than 5 minutes. However, since I wanted the game to stand on its own right, and since I didn't think it was relevant to the theme, I didn't bother to state it. If this would have had any effect on how I did, then I am ready to admit it was my fault.

By the way, my game (Soul Defender) has had 15 downloads (WHOPEEEE! j/k), so if anyone else has played it and would be so kind as to offer me feedback on the Soul Defender thread in the Program announcements board I would be most appreciative.

guruchild.....just......chill. i understand you put a lot of effort into your game. that's fantastic. we all did. but your posts are just constant whining.

you think your game was original and interesting, I'm sure many people agree with you (I personally thought it was pretty fun, but a little repetitive).. unfortunately the judges thought differently.

I thought the originality of my game was great, but it didn't get me anywhere. and now that I think about it, although it's an interesting idea, and a great programming excerisize, my game's really not that fun. so it was a great learning experience. that's enough for me.

Guruchild think about this for a moment.

What is the most downloaded & played game from the alienware competition and which has generated the most feedback to it's authors?

This is afterall why a lot of freeware authors make their games. Without wishing to sound totally shallow it probably is not Room War. With only 598 downloads from the showcase and limited download exposure.

Probably the most played game from the competition is my one. Not because it is the best, but because I have a huge user base from my web site and anything I put out is guaranteed many thousands of downloads. I did not generate all that much publicity for Extranjero but it has had a few thousand downloads all the same.

It's far from the best game in the competition. Doesnt that just make you sick?

A quick check of last nights stats shows the lead is fairly slender, with my game running at just over 2000 downloads plus the little amount from the showcase with roomwar gaining a little every day - we'll see how that settles down...

In short what I am saying is: Life aint fair, so suck it or lump it.

God created the world in 7 days, but we're still waiting for the patch.

I see you have a problem when people express emotion in their writing. And I don't know where you went wrong but this was not a penis size contest so pull your pants back up.

So, in short, "suck it or lump it."

What would really help is if people could comment on your game inside the showcase page, I know very few people actually do this, but usually if someone has a problem or feels that the game could be easily improved then they might post a comment.

Perhaps Rich could tie all the showcases together (Retro comp, Alienware, and standard showcase) and add some comment options we would find it easier to optimise our games playability.

If I enter another competition, then I won't be wasting time on levels that people never see - I mean has anyone completed Jetpac2003 or OIE? - I doubt it, everyone except me - so there's little point in taking that route with compo entries (wish I'd known that sooner). I'm thinking that insane and gorgeous blasters make the biggest impression, like not even levels - just continuous gameplay like some console games.

My last note on the compo grumbles...

Retro comp:
Re-create a retro classic and bring it upto date (i.e better graphics/sound etc).
Winner Diam Diam - Really basic graphics, pretty much just Boulderdash in DB (you could say it had great playability, true - but so did the original).

Alienware comp:
Using the supplied alien, create a playable game that makes good use of the alien model.
Winner Roomwar - Awesome graphics, but limited playability and limited use of the model.

That's me - finished grumbling .

That's a great idea and I know I sure as hell would use it but unfortunately that's not going to happen. Rich is away and by the time he gets back very few people will still be trying out the games and those that wanted to give feedback will probably be too lazy then. I guess you could still email, but I'd rather just post a comment.

@Guruchild

I'll say it again.

Whatever people might say about the results, having played the winning and "losing" entries, the best games won. Your game, wasn't in the top ten because it wasn't as good as the ones that were. It's not that it was bad, just that their games were better. Simple as that.

My time of mourning is up - I'm fine now.

I think that Andy explained it best. My game didn't have enough Wow in the first 5 minutes.

And like Van B, I also put lots of work into later levels - mainly level 3. It would take the game player 15-40 minutes to reach that level, and by that time the judges have probably moved on to the next entry.

I will compete again, and I have learned some valuable things. Next time, I won't put in quite so much time or effort. 120 hours was probably too much, because when I didn't even place, I felt that the time investment didn't justify the outcome enough. Next time I will only spend maybe 10-50 hours on the project. That way, if I don't place, I won't take it so bad. I'll lighten up a little.

Perhaps future competitions could have different categories, such as:

Games that were done in 3D Studio Max / Games that were not done with 3D Studio max. That way, all of the graphically dazzling entries wouldn't take anything away from the other entries that had everything to offer except for breath-taking eye candy.

Games done by professional programmers / Games that were done by beginning level programmers. This way, other games that were done by beginners might get a little more attention.

Congratulations to all the winners, and I will surely see you all again at the next contest!

it not just max it a lot of programs that give you an egad. but if you do`t now how to ues then there no good.

i do`t think i`l get that better models out of 3D Studio max as i do out of Anim8or. some one whos a good modeler can get a lot better modeler from 3D Studio max then Anim8or.

so buy £100(for 3D Studio max) or £2000(for Maya) of softwear will to make you win.
