If I wanted to live in the USA, how would I do that on legal terms?

The only information I have read, tells me I have to be born there, or marry an American citizen and then have to wait 3-5 years before I can become a citizen myself.

So I'm just asking, if any one knows how you can live in the USA, legally?

Well to become a citizen you have to do what you said. You may want to call immigration for a greencard to live until you become a citizen. I dont know much more than that.

I believe this matter was greatly covered by a song from Rammstein.

I knew I should have titled it some thing else

Steve, what do green cards allow you to do? Can you get a job and buy a home?

I'm not entirely sure how you would go about doing it... i know it's possible to get a work visa and stay for a number of years doing that... but i don't know how you would become a permanent citizen (besides maybe finding some random American girl and marrying her lol)

There is stacks of info on doing this online. But only trust what it says on actual Government web sites, like this one:

Yes, watch out for the scam sites.

You can live in the US without being a citizen. In addition to obtaining permission to live here by virtue of marraige, most legal immigrants secure permission by the employment route. About 50,000 people a year can be admitted to residency on a lottery, but UK citizens are not eligible for the lottery. There is also political asylum, but that would be a hard sell for a UK resident. The employment route is your best bet.

You can get a visa to live here, go to school here etc. If you are employed you can stay quite awhile and after 7 years in the states no matter if you marry a current citizen or not you can apply to become naturalized. If you are a UK citizen it should be very easy to get a visa we near about consider you semi-citizens already. I have known, and worked with quite a few people from the UK, and they seemed to have a pretty easy time of extending visas.

Getting into America? I want to get out. I live in the US but I don't really enjoy it. Trust me, I love all the freedoms, but I'd rather live in Europe. I'm sick of politics and the way we handle wars. When I finish college here (a long time from now...), I'm going to try to get a programming job in the UK or Germany.

@Jeku: Well you see, most Americans today have no pride for us. I say kick them out if they want to leave, send em to the worst country we can find, let them see how much better our standards are.

@Kaurotu: Would you happen to live in the west (California, Oregon, Washington), because this area has a huge amount of unpatriots...the Western Socialist Bloc they are=P. And you will find that politics is universal, and many countries handle war a lot worse than we do (ie: France).

That would be quite easy as well.

My vote would be to come in on a work VISA and then marry an American girl. There are so many single ones that you don't even have to settle for random

That's a bit undifferentiated.
There are quite a few politicians (and certain media, mainly one big tabloid) trying to enforce that ban (on a national base) after that incident a few months ago. At this point I don't see that happening, though.

You could become an illegal immigrant, works a lot for the Polish (I kid, I kid, I am not against immigration)

I can't blame you for wanting to move to America, it's so much cheaper there.

Quote: "but I'd rather live in Europe. I'm sick of politics and the way we handle wars. When I finish college here (a long time from now...), I'm going to try to get a programming job in the UK or Germany."

I wouldn't come to the UK, it's becoming more like America by the day, political correctness, government making the country worse, the youth becoming more and more rebellious, I mean we were talking to our Philosophy teacher in lesson today, none of us would have ever dreamed acting like kids do in school now, I mean we had a student excluded for swearing at a teacher, now they do it all of the time. I got a detention for saying 'crap'. And misbehaviour, I would have been in a whole leap of trouble for being too disruptive (And in Maths I did, but I was no where near to the extent of they are not, I mean Chris and Josh, the two worst behaved kids in our year look well behaved in comparison) I personally think England is finding harder to control the youth and you'll get tied up in as much politics as you would in the USA, just lower crime rates and more tax and NHS health care.

You'll find similarities in a lot of countries in the European Union, shame really I really would have loved to move back to Germany, where I lived was so laid back and happy, wonderful (wunderschon!)

I do want to move out the UK myself, after uni of course, Sweden, Canada or the nicest parts of Japan hit my fancies.

Definetively not on the same scale

@ Kaurotu

Try Sweden, man that's a great country. I go there every year just to be there, lol.

Well.....also to shop for various liquids for less than half what it costs in Norway.

Ditto to Sweden, I know I mentioned it already, although cold, but from what I've seen, a wonderful country, who could argue with that as they're given us Opeth.

US politics is simple, people of the party opposite of the one in power talk about how bad things are, how the administration stinks etc. The average us citizen is naught but mindless cattle that believe whatever they are told by those they follw.

Yes, Japan......who can argue with a country so uniqe (in a good way). I'm and planning om staying there some months or hopefully a year or two. Same with St. Petersburg later.

Will be wierd for me, the population of St. Petersburg is more then the entire population of my own country. Well that goes for many cities but still.....wierd.

btw, Sweden isn't really that cold. It's just a bad rumor the country has gotten somehow. The summers are too hot for me over there, then again it's probably because i come from a colder place....

btw 2. Seppuku Arts, if you go to Japan and find a nice place, let me know, i'll may come along if you don't mind

Edit: @ Steve J

Yeah agreed, perspective is a peculiar thing. Poor France though lol, everyone mocks them.

So if I got a US work permit, would I be able to live there for how ever long the visa allows me?

The only employment I could look for and enjoy, would be photography. How many options in photography does America have? If any one knows.

For photography you'd probably try and work for a magazine or newspaper, and since you'd be new here, I'd try and live in a small community area, and apply there. Also, do you have any family members living here? If so, go to where they live, I'd imagine it'd be difficult to save enough money to live off of while finding a job and place to stay.

Honestly, I don't truly like living in California. It's nice and all, but like others earlier mentioned (Steve J, etc) people aren't too patriotic, especially where I live. I mean, I love my country and all, just not the demographics(in terms of them not being patriotic). The United States has a lot of opportunity, and pit falls, so if I were you I'd be sure to fully look over this future option you're considering. Anyway, good luck on your choices and that you'll eventually find where you'd like to live.

Well, from experience you can't work in the U.S. unless you can prove you're not taking away a job from an American. You have to do a job that they can't do, according to them. Therefore you most likely need a degree and work in a trade. I don't know enough about photography, but like most arts there's probably a dime a dozen, too many locals to compete with.

Good luck anyways.

I live about two hours east of Chicago. But, yes I understand it's all relative. Depending on where you live in the US. I don't know, I just find Europe an interesting place. My dad has German friends and they are the coolest guys ever. One of them even has a Ph.D in Computer Science. The highest degree of geek! LOL, yeah they are just super nice and intellegent. Germany's schools are also some of the best in the world. And best of all, college is basicly free.

But it's all going to come down to where I can get a good job or not when I get older.

Why don't you just come over here as a student? Experience things here for awhile, then head over to Germany for a bit of schooling (I used to ride the Strasse by the University of Mannheim all the time....saw a couple of guys wearing their Kilts).

I want to live in Japan... At least when it was all country.. And when the shinsingumi and choshu (Along with other warriors) ran through the streets doing battle to bring about the Meiji era in Japan (The choshu and other warriors fighting for the new era, the shinsingumi fighting against it). Then maybe I could meet Kawakami Gensai

*I'm an American, which makes my above comment relavent, except for the reason why I want to live in Japan*

Wow Seppuku Arts,
I haden't known that UK schools would be that strict
Lol, it's become normal to here of shootings, or suicides, then more suicides triggered by the first in schools. And getting in trouble for saying "crap?" Wow. If that were the case in America, the schools would be a LOT more behaved... becasue everyone would be expelled the first hour for cursing in more then a few ways!

To tell you the truth, I agree that America is headed on a crash course. But unlike most people, I don't blame it on the president
Instead, I see it becasue of a moral downfall. As Mel Gibson clearly stated in his new movie, Apoclypto, for an empire to fall (America for example) it must first be destroyed from within itself.

However, it makes me mad to see poeple leaving this still great country, when in truth, they are to lazy to actually "do" anything about the many problems of today. So unlike some poeple, I'm going down with this ship, because as a citizen, I too am a captain of sorts, and I would hate to see the American dream die.

I'd bet a large sum of money that France helped the US win the revolutionary war, something that has long since been forgotten by many neocons in our day. Without France there would be no USA.

If you have a skill, like a trade or something that is in decent demand (IT is usually a good option), then you should be fine.

Don't go over there unless you can get a job, seriously, even if you plan to marry some internet strumpet - I know 2 guys who did that, both of them are back over here in blighty, despite having American wives.

And without the help of the US there would be no democratic France (French Revolution), no modern France (WW1 Help, AND WW2 Liberation)... so score 1 for french help, score 3 for US help.

True some french officers did come to help train the militia during the revolutionary war, however they were not sent by the French government, they came for personal reasons. The French did enter the war and supply naval support once it was basically over (kind of like the marines at the end of Missing in Action 3, they all run in to help once Chuck Noriis's character has killed everyone off), and limited the British retreat keeping them from regrouping.

On topic, Higgins did you have any idea what part of the country you wanted to move to?

Some where within California, Hobgoblin.

To who ever asked me why I want to travel but to get full citizen ship to America, I dont know why, maybe because I think its the only legal way to stay there a while. Unless they allow you to stay as a tourist for many, many years? But I always thought you were only allowed to stay some where as a tourist for a set time, say 3-5 months.

Just as well, I don't mind a bit of cold, I've seen what Sweden is like, its great, at least there is some good wilderness if I wanted to do a bit of back packing as I would. I have been thinking about moving there after uni or something for a little while, heck I've even looked for software on learning Swedish. If I don't live there, I would at least hope to visit there.
