Unless your essay is about the relationship between programmers and God, you might want to look up some more statistics for a wider demographic.

As a group, programmers are much more unlikely to believe in God than the general population - maybe something to do with wondering if God could have maybe debugged His code a bit more?

For America

For the World

For the UK (plus a bit about Jedis)

I'm from Norway, and I guess I'd be something in between an agnostic and a freethinker: "I'm really uncertain wether gods exist or not, but there's got to be a scientific way of proving it. Until then, I don't give a damn about choosing a belief."

Agnosticism:
Quote: "Agnostics claim either that it is not possible to have absolute or certain knowledge of the existence or nonexistence of God or gods; or, alternatively, that while individual certainty may be possible, they personally have no knowledge. Agnosticism in both cases involves some form of skepticism."

Freethought:
Quote: "Freethought is a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic and not be compromised by emotion, authority, tradition, or any dogma. The cognitive application of freethought is known as freethinking, and practitioners of freethought are known as freethinkers."

Atheist, England.

I'll put why, if that's ok:
I'd rather not believe in anything as important and life-changing as a deity without some fairly solid proof. If such proof were to appear, I'd be a theist (god-believer). But that would only happen if God exists (obviously), and if God does exist then he probably won't make the fact blatantly obvious because that would destroy the idea of faith. So technically I'm an agnostic (since I don't completely write off the possibility of a God) but since I doubt I'll ever find any proof, I jump to the end of the spectrum and label myself an atheist.

If anyone finds this post offensive or anything, just say and I'll edit it away. I don't want a flame war

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

Not sure what to put down really, as people have different ideas about what Atheist really means...

Some people consider Atheism "Believing there is no god", while others consider it "A lack of belief in (a) god". I'm more of the second type, personally.

Well not sure tbh, it has it's own relgion code here 869
So it's officially seen as a seperate religion, however I'm not entirely sure on if it is seen in the eyes of the law as it's own religion.

@gbark: Wiki says...
Quote: "Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods[1] or rejects theism.[2] When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities,[3] alternatively called nontheism.[4] Although atheism is often equated with irreligion, some religious philosophies, such as secular theology and some varieties of Theravada Buddhism, also lack belief in a personal god.

Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism[5] and naturalism,[6] there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.[7]

The term atheism originated as a pejorative epithet applied to any person or belief in conflict with established religion.[8] With the spread of freethought, scientific skepticism, and criticism of religion, the term began to gather a more specific meaning and was sometimes used as a self-description by atheists."

I read the Jedi article, I think that's awesome, whose to say Jedi is any less of a religion than the others.
If you can base a religion on a book, you can base one on a film

But I don't think "International Tolerance Day" should be renamed "Interstellar Tolerance Day" because for a start we don't know of any life in other solar systems so there isn't a lot to tolerate

I think using 'Jew' is probably a derogatory way of putting it, like I guess calling a Polish guy a Pole or a Pakistani a, I won't say it, but I'm sure you get the idea. (heck 'Jew' is a word on our 'not to say on air' list. )

Okay... how about a three-page online Rocksim Bible, written October 2nd 2004? It was posted on my crappy Geocities website until February 2006, when I cut back on everything and only left the "Rants" up. And since then I haven't made a single update to the website, and haven't even looked at it until just now, lol. So I guess you can safely say this is the "Dead Sea Scrolls" of Rockism. Anyway, between me and Sagetech there's 2 people on TGC. That means we're more predominant on TGC than the Jewish, Muslim, Satanist, or Jedi faiths. We demand recognition in your poll!
