We have a Wii in ourhousehold, that means I'm hip and cool, that means I've finally moved into next gen gaming. Despite what some people say, it's pretty cool - I don't care about next gen graphics on the thing. We only have The Simpsons, Resident Evil and WiiSports at the moment, but I'm impressed by the little thing.

I know people prefer the PS3 and 360, but I might get one of those as well when I have the cash.

What games are really worth playing? Though I'm poor, but you never know might get some money over Christmas and buy a game or two, I'm mighty tempted by Zelda but what do people say?

I've played Wii Sports and Resident Evil on the Wii, and I was pretty impressed too. It's certainly different.

Zelda is probably the best game on the Wii; it's awesomeness made me cry. Metroid 3 and Super Mario Galaxy are also extremely good games.

That's not as bad as you think you said.

Metroid Prime 3 for sure.

Also, you might consider Medal of Honor Heroes 2. Not the greatest shooter ever, but the controls are pretty cool with the WiiMote, plus it has 32 man multiplayer as well.

Rayman Raving Rabbids is good if you like single player / mini-game stuff.

Ummm... Zelda is pretty good as well Smash Brothers Brawl is coming out soon. There's Guitar Hero 3... Lot's of fun ones!

I recommend (in order):

1.Metroid Prime 3
2.Zelda: Twighlight Princess
3.Smash Brothers Brawl
4.Super Mario Galaxy

Productivity on Hassassin has increased tenfold.

Funny though Xeno, Brawl isn't out yet and Galaxies is. I'm getting Galaxies for Christmas. You mean I shouldn't play it for 2 more months!?

Ooh Smash Brothers, play that one once...soon realised I was the other player...the one losing.

Quote: "It's certainly different."

Indeed beats the eye toy, I looked like an idiot playing that...but yes it's different and a good source of exercise for gamers.

If Zelda made someone cry, sounds like a good choice - hopefully I'd be able to pick it up cheap somewhere...shame I can't take it back to Uni with me but hey I got Oblivion at Uni.

Also Metriod was fun on the DS, might be interesting to see the Wii take on it, though I doubt I could get over the DS version.

Hey, that's pretty cool mate. Wii's pack alot of fun. I do recommend Super Mario Galaxy as it's 85% fun and 15% even more fun.

Oh and since i'm a huge fan of metriod, i recommend that one too. But don't listen to me, i'm biased.

I did the shopping for my mom ^_^ It wasn't MY idea. My brothers asked for it and my mom sent me out to do it! I swear!

I don't have any clue what I'm getting. I didn't even give my parents a list so it should be interesting this year.

Hate to tell you but the Wii is not a true "next-gen" console

Anyways, the absolute best game on the Wii, and which certainly had the most playtime on my system, is Super Mario Galaxy. Hands down it's my favourite platformer of all time.

Also, consider getting Medal of Honour Heroes 2, simply because my friends worked on it!

Oh and lest I forget, Geometry Wars Galaxies is awesome! Just make sure you have a classic controller for it, as it's dreadful with the Wii-mote and nunchuk.

Yeah, if you consider what next gen might actually mean.

If it means the next generation of graphics then fair enough, the Wii is lacking compared to 360 and PS3.

But if you consider next gen to mean the next generation of gamers, then the Wii is the only true next gen console! - no other console has attracted non-gamers like the Wii has. I mean there must be a decent percentage of Wii owners who have never owned a console before, most 360 and PS3 owners had the previous consoles.

If next gen only accounts for graphics then what a very shallow industry gaming has turned out to be. I've probably spent more than £200 on 360 games in the last couple of months (GH3, CoD4, Mass Effect, Kane and Lynch, Assassins Creed), yet I still play the DS more than I've played all these games put together - Geometry Wars especially rocks . I'm boycotting 360 games for the time being, I think... well I'll try at least .

I'd recommend Guitar Hero 3 above any other Wii game, it's reasonably priced too (not like the 360 version - I had to buy 3!). There's pretty slim pickings on the Wii, so you'll end up buying Zelda, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid before long anyway.

Another push for GH3! Although I prefer GH2 and 80s.

BTW, I heard that Okami was coming out on Wii. If you haven't played that on a PS2 then using the remote to draw is probably gonna be fun. Also the Wii have more power and thus probably less lag. (Yeah, I picked up Okami again this weekend, replaying from the beginning).

@Jeku, I call it a next Gen console because it's better than the ones I have, plus it's an advance in gameplay - yeah graphics aren't top notch, doesn't really matter for the little thing.

DA, might be tempted by Guitar Hero, for a laugh and to live in the fantasy that I'm a good guitarist.

Sounds like Zelda and Mario is winning here, I'll see if amazon has any 'buy two for...' offers - though probably not the best time to look at Amazon, for goodness sakes the DS Lites are £150 on there right now.

Okami would be nice---- if it were out yet

Also, I wouldn't recommend GHIII just yet, as the sound is mono on the Wii (a fairly large bug, as you can't hear some of the audio tracks properly). They're going to be replacing the discs free of charge, but still...

Depends though - if we're talking next gen _gameplay_ as opposed to graphics, then the Wii certainly blows the PS3 and 360 out of the water in terms of possibilities.

I'd call it "Side-Gen". It's not last gen, and it's not following the standard progression to next gen. Instead, it's taken a side route to success.
I must say I love the Wii remote. It's great as while it's not the world's best gamepad, wheel or flight stick, it does a pretty good job of all three and is easier to fit in a laptop bag than any of the three. It's often cheaper, too.
The Wii itself I can't recommend, as the disc drive is far inferior to that of the Gamecube. It's noisier and makes far more mistakes. And the poor cooling causes frequent crashes.

The Wii's stuck in the past. Regardless of graphics, gaming is becoming an art form, yet the Wii holds this back with its design ethos: "we just want to make games that are fun."

Speaks for itself, doesn't it?

Games were meant to be fun...

Just because Nintendo have 'fun' in mind doesn't mean the 'art' form as you like to call it is held back...All this artistic have their fun alternative...And what's so artsy about games like Doom 3, the game play isn't special, the plot is crap and the only good this is the graphics when it was released...Not very 'arty'

I think the Wii's tiny cooling fan is more than a little inadequate. No other console I know of makes car-esque pops and pings through heat stress after being turned off.

That's unavoidable in practically any electrical appliance, seeing as though there is no such thing as a 100% efficient cooling mechanism. It's just every so often one of these 'pings' will be audible.

Every time I turn it off after more than half an hour or so of play, it creaks and pops and makes ping noises. It also has bizarre crashes in which the screen goes red with overlaid bits of static. It's well ventilated, on its side with an inch of clearance for the intake and with a wall three inches from the vent. Hot air from the vent can go upwards, though. It gets hotter than my PC, and the power supply has mood swings when it crashes. I.e. it stops working at all for the best part of ten minutes.

The sound doesn't annoy me, it's just worrying. I dunno, the 360 melts its own solder, the Wii's incapable of keeping itself running for more than an hour, and the PS3... well, it's very big. And noisy. I think that frankly all these next-gen consoles are mere shadows of their ancestors.

My Wii makes noises too.

Quote: "Depends though - if we're talking next gen _gameplay_ as opposed to graphics, then the Wii certainly blows the PS3 and 360 out of the water in terms of possibilities."

And this is another thing I'm going to comment on. The *possibilities* are there, yes. But not a single game has been released on the Wii with "revolutionary" controls. Everyone always talks about the Wii's controls as being next-gen, back to the basics, etc. etc. But honestly, I just played through the best Wii game (Mario Galaxy) and didn't see the absolute need for a Wii-mote.

Wii Sports' controls are kinda fun, for a faked gesture game (and I say faked because you can just wiggle the controller and your character will do its thing). There's yet to be a game where the control mechanism is like "Hot fiery hell this game's controls are revolutionary!!"

So far the Wii has been a clearing house for crap mini-game compilations (Carnival, anyone?) and ported PS2 games where the Wii controls were nothing more than an afterthought (Tomb Raider Anniversary). My honest opinion is the Wii fad will end faster than the other two consoles and Nintendo will make a Wii 2 with next-gen graphics and waggle capability.

I hate to be so negative--- I mean, I love SMG and yes, Kororinpa. But honestly, why are we all raving about our 90 year old grandmothers enjoying our console? Shouldn't there be something wrong with that??

And where's the hot games that would only work well on the Wii? The best games, SMG, Metroid Prime 3, etc. worked perfectly fine with a standard dual analog stick last generation.

EDIT:

Okay, I'd better shut up now as I'm working on a Wii title as we speak

In my opinion, the same problem is there with the graphics on PS3 + 360. "Where's the beef?"

Quote: "But honestly, why are we all raving about our 90 year old grandmothers enjoying our console? Shouldn't there be something wrong with that?? "

What is wrong with that? Are you one of these people who hates things as soon as they become popular or something?

I think the video games industry is driving itself into the ground, by closing itself into a small corner and demographic of people. The Wii is the inverse - the fact they have many demographics of people playing games is most definitely a good thing - for one, it means more people to play, but namely, it means the success of more (currently) 'outside' genres is likely to be more so.

More than an hour?

Our Wii has been running since 15:00, it's now 22:15 - I think you need to get yours checked out - you might have a faulty one.

Jeku, well I think the consoles fulfill their purpose really, I'm glad there are these differences - it means there are more people to appeal to with consoles and different moods to appeal, lets admit you're not going to please everybody - so having different philosophies and game types/control types pleases more people. My Dad hates consoles (Desktop gaming was what he normally does) but the Wii has satisfied him.

Well, it's fine on the main menu - but whilst playing Far Cry (the controls of which are pretty good) or TP, freezes are unsettlingly frequent. It seems to have trouble reading some GameCube games, too. I've tried two Melee discs, and both run into errors on Pokemon Stadium. Only when with the standard music though.
Odd.
Here's a capture of a crash it did about a week ago. It's only done this once. The rest of the time, I'm given white text on a black background.

I'd love to update it, but it hates my wifi. There's a YouTube video http://youtube.com/watch?v=rEUTWy_61aA here. It was a gift, so I have no receipt, and I've moved house since having it. I've lost the warranty card somewhere. It's a bit better if I place it near something really, really cold. Putting it on top of the Sky box is a no-no. Driver hung on the loading screen repeatedly.

Yeah Nex, your Wii is having issues apparently. Ours is on I'd say about 7 hours over the course of a day every day between all my siblings. We never have issues.

And Jeku, how revolutionary can you get the controls? They're pretty awesome as it is, what would you change for instance in a game like Metroid Prime, or Medal of Honor Heroes 2. It's crazy awesome to be able to throw your grenades, pump a shotgun and buttsmash someone all with realistic gestures.

BTW, it's a HUGE improvement over analog sticks LOL. I wish Halo 3 were on the Wii, all the analog pad users would be so screwed. Oh wait, they have auto aiming to make up for it. Lolz.

And as far as fun gaming goes, I'm looking forward to Steven Spielberg's Blocks. Nothing totally revolutionary going on, but it's a giant puzzle game based around physics. I think it's going to be a great casual game to challenge you while sitting on the couch. I look forward to it.

Bummer to hear about the Mono only on the Wii. I didn't know that. I'll have to get the disc replaced ASAP when we get the game for Christmas.

Nope, not at all. I'm one of those people who don't want to see half a dozen bowling, shuffleboard and darts games on my game console. Coming soon--- Wii-Knitting with free cross stitch mini-game

Basically my point is that I'm all for revolutionary controls, but I've yet to see any proof of a game using them in a way that's, well, revolutionary. Some people might like pumping their hands up and down as fast as they can to make Sonic run fast, but to me that's a lazy controls tack-on. I mean--- damn.

I like casual games, actually. But I'm sick and tired of seeing lazy ports and mini-game compilations. The Wii has some of the worst rated games from any console since the N-Gage. It also has two highly rated games, but definitely not as many as there should be.

Developers and publishers are seeing it with $$$ because it a.) takes less work to develop something and b.) people buy up Wii games regardless of content. Hello, Wii Play is still on the top sellers list. Revolutionary? No.

Yeah, I had left my Wii on for two days straight without noticing it haha and it was fine. It sounds like yours is having internal issues.
