well done for actually doing something about it and not saying "This would be cool" and not doing anything about it.

I have a server / client chat system here all ready! It'll probally be rubbish for handling all the 3D stuff but you could use it as a way to transfer all the text.

I can send you it if your interested, (it supports text and data so you can pretty much send anything through it).

Lol, it doesn't take long to wrap DLL's. I only skimmed through the rest of the posts in this thread so I have no idea what you ended up on deciding to do but if you want me to wrap one of your DLL's then I'd be happy to, it's hardly any trouble at all. I'm sure you would have emailed me by now if you wanted to do that though but I'm just letting you know I would anyway.

Exeat, we may need a vb6 dll wrapped up. We are going with a "non-.net" setup so users wont need the framework. Mnem is coding/setting up the server and Zen and I are doing the DBP client coding

I will email you after I speak to this guys a bit more on some design desicions.

Thanks

It will support many simultaneous users but Mnem could give you the exact number. Zen are Myself building the UI (with support from Exeat) - We may need an artist and a 3d guru a some point down the road

I'd help if I could, but I don't know much about net commands (never used them) and I'm not a very experienced programmer. However, I might be able to contribute a model or something.

I've got too many fish to fry. But when you get to the model/character building stage, I'd love to contribute something as well. Hopefully, you all will have the time to work up a 'style sheet' and modelling guide for everyone to standardize on.

I don't want to speak for Zen but I am pretty sure we are currently not looking for any other outside help at the moment - not until we get to the modelling/3d aspect of the system. We are keeping note of everyone who has offered their help/skills and we will post here when the time comes to make those steps. Thank you to everyone who has responded - we will keep the thread updated!

Define "something fun." Remember the mega team? We had a lot of people from the forums gathering to make a massive RPG. That bombed.

How are you going to manage to user system? If you're gonna leave it to sign up I could come on as, say, Cattle Rustler and proke Raven or vice versa, then again do you think rich will give you access to the DB data forum database?

@Mnemonix
You can use our database for user management if you like. Would work like... you write a piece in the wrapper (or java server) to connect to a script on our site that auths/verifies the user. Our database uses a secondary password for connections like that so people's account security isn't compromised at all. I'd be happy to hook up a script for it if you like

Ng, would we be able to store all our user data in your user management system, without using your other services?, if we can that sounds like a great idea!. How much would it cost, we havent quite figured out the final cost for everything, and we would need this service during the dev period. I assume if i choose to do it this way, im going to have to write the functionality into the server myself, down to communicating with the server directly?. Get back to me on this one.

Yes, absolutely. Well, the user would need a base NG account so I don't have to tear the system apart, lol. Then we could make an expansion module to let you store any additional information about the user you like.

So it'd look like:

front end:
new user -> signup at NG -> base account created

back end:
base account module (protected data) | your module (your data)

Then I'd put together an auth script that allowed you to verify usernames/passwords of the users that logon. The script would dip into that protected data (that you won't be able to access) and return a response. Your server app (java app) or client app (the wrapper) would make a remote request to that special script on the NG server to authorize the user for logon.

(Note: Another script would need to be created to let you freely modify the information stored in your private module/mini-dbase)

From there, it'd be your responsibility to handle the network systems, etc... You'd just be kind of pinging the NG server with account data to make sure it's valid before letting their connection into the avatar/chat world succeed.

So... the network play and user database would be on two separate servers. I'm assuming you'd be using your own server for the network play, although we could provide you with one if need be.

Pricing would come down like this:

If you just want us to auth user data, it's free.

If you also want to store custom user info for each user on the server (private module with script to modify it) we'd be looking at like $10 a month (covers diskspace and potentially a lot of database queries (ie: load)) for everything, not a per person charge, lol.

If you also want a server to handle the network play, then we can arrange something as well, although I'm aware you have this part covered.

Let me know if I missed anything.

megaton, sorry. We havent really decided yet, I think that will be fleshed out when we are ready to start working with some 3d people (modellers/texturers). Right now we are waiting for Mnem to finsish up the server app (hopefully today) and then we are going to extensively test it and the protocol with the text-based client that I have ready and waiting *cough*. I would also imigane that we will want to stress test the server app with many clients connected before moving on to the visual aspects of the project - that will most likely involve a call to these forums for beta testers...

Should be soon - will keep this posted for progress.
Please foward all complaints to Mnemonix

I love the idea, so here's a few suggustions I have.

Few Suggustions

- When you near finish, tell us and maybe we can have users submit character models for themselves, or become downloadable.

- Have a "Fake" currency. Perhaps this currency goes up after time or can be awarded. This would be sort of like a points system.

- Make use of the currency by being able to buy different character models, accesseries, or key cards to private rooms.

- Have billboards everywhere. Perhaps you can even let some users put TGC products or their own creations on them.

- One of the stores can be a jeopardy room where Mnemonix does his irc trivia.

I know it'll be awhile till this is completed, so these are just some things to think about later on or while designing.

@CR,
I'll download it when I get home today! I have off On Fri-Sun all summer, so I should be able to get things in high-gear this weekend.

@mikeS,
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback. CR and I have talked about some similar ideas. I'm not sure if I am supposed to give it away now though, and we don't want to get too dar ahead of ourselves. So, I'll keep zipped for now.

Let's just say we are on the same page!!!

It' good to know that there is an interest arounf the community in something like this.

Ok, I kinda changed what we talked about yesterday due to the logistics of it all... you'll see. The new idea is better.

MikeS: all great suggestions, I can't wait until we get to that point in the development process - but this of course would require a *cough* SERVER from *cough* Mnemonix *cough*. And I don't mean the machine, I mean the app...

LOL at Zen

I forsee the following (in no particular order):
personalized-uploadable 3d avatars (within specification) although we would start with a group of built in generic ones
completely free-roaming 3d environment w/chat
personalized/customizable areas where events could take place like trivia and other games (like mentioned above). Each user could build his or her own area within specification. This is where billboards and the like would be placed.
some sort of "fighting" ability would be nice for when someone pisses you off
Admin/Mod police force that could gang up on unruly users either the fun way by kicking their arse within the scope of the 3d world, or by simply issuing various kick, kick ban commands (which reminds me to add that to the protocol, heh)

plus a million other ideas that you people should continue to post in this thread

There is one idea that i like, dont know whether it can be implemented though due to restrictions of DBP. But it would be good to have a live version of the IRC chat projected on to a big screen in one of the main areas . Although you wouldnt be able to take part, it may be fun to watch.

Mnemonix, great idea. It would be like one of the NY Times Square (or any major city) monitors on the side of a building.

Couldn't help but to start thinking of possibilites myself (here comes the cart before the horse), I was thinking of rooms like in farenheit 451, where the four walls of a room are actually flatscreen tv's.

A room something akin to a hollodeck(? you know that startrek thing) where a virtual environment go from polar caps to the tropics with nothing more than a fade.

yeah like I said getting ahead of myself. I really want to blend futuristic rooms with nature elements. Kind of like living in a space biosphere. Not sure if anyone saw the episodes on discovery about future buildings(super cities) that japan is looking to build. These awesome looking towers. That's the environment I am loooking to build. I'll try to find a pic for anyone who is not familiar with it.

check it out here
http://media.dsc.discovery.com/convergence/engineering/skycity/interactive/interactive.html

Of course our environment want be that big, you would never find anyone. (But the idea may be based off of it like the middle deck and the person rooms like one section at the top), and we could limtit the actual areas you can visit.

Another suggustion

Since I hate walking around in mmorpg's, perhaps a taxi service would be of use.

Let people buy cars/different taxi's with $currency and be able to drive people around to different places. The drivers earn currency and the other people get around faster.
