What happened to the hope of the new name, and 3D specs by "tommorow" which has passed.
Looks like I wont be able to do much since i'm leaving tommorow.... for a week... So this can be a sorta goodbye... Err... Bye...

This should be good once it comes out...

Specs are coming later tonight. There's nothing stopping you from modeling now.

The non-offficial specs are 1,000 polygon limit and 256x256 uv map. I won't have an exact amount until I test out the LOD system later on today.

OK the first incarnation of the DBP chat client is here. You can download the zip file at http://home.nyc.rr.com/madtek/3dchat/ClientTestRelease.zip

BEFORE YOU RUN
go into the folder and open COMMDATA.TXT, in there change the first two lines to reflect your Nickname and Password, then save and close the file. Don't add white space or blank lines, etc. There should be four lines: Nick, Password, URL(dont edit), Port(dont edit), Connection Timeout(Only edit if you are having trouble connecting). These settings will establish your account on the server so choose your Nick and password carefully - everyone is encouraged to use their existing TGC Forum nicks

RUN EXE
Run the exe, you should see a splash screen, press any key. On the next screen verify the data that is listed and follow instructions.

The Chat
If the login was not successful you'll be prompted. If it was successful you will see a simple text chat screen. Have fun!

If you have been having trouble connecting...
Go down this thread to where I reposted the exe and explained what to fix. It was basically a timeout issue on slower machines/networks...see below.

EDIT: THE KB INPUT IS TEMPORARY, STOP COMPLAINING

Thanks for helping us test this

Yeah, I can only type somewhere around 20 wpm. Could be lag, could be a problem with the prog in general...

Let us know of any errors you encounter. Right now I'm pretty sure it's not lag, the type speed limit is just slow.

yes the typing speed is weird but the next test will have the correct GUI in place which will be windows based controls. Test seemed well so far - had somewhere between 5-10 people all chatting away without any problems. No one said they crashed or locked up so thats a good sign This was more of a test for the client than for the server.

Keep downloading and joining the test.
Thanks

Ok, here's the 3D model specs. There's a few notes I've added to the bottom worth reading.

Notes: I prefer human type figures, but won't mind characters with no limbs etc. If you're thinking about doing a giant eyeball, a fish, or something crazy please let me know here so I can help you out with the animations, and fix things up.

Also, at the moment there's a place to submit the models, but I haven't confirmed it yet. There will be a client coming shortly to you that'll automatically submit your models in. This program should be completed in about a week, so these specs give you a week to work on your model. Until then, hold off on sending me e-mails or asking questions about where to upload.

For some inspiration...

Here's CattleRustler's avatar I did for him.(untextured with basic animation.)

[EDIT] As of July 30,2004. Punch animation frames 181-210 are now to be used for idle frames. Hopefully no one has started animating yet.

hmm, thats strange. any firewall or proxy issues possibly? Usually it will either log you in and allow chat, or post a screen telling you there was a problem. I am assuming you saw a screen like:

(bla bla)

?

Yup. I've had my firewall allow all activity through TCP port 9803 as listed in the required text file. But...would the port happen to be UDP?

[Edit] Added it to allow everything through UDP port 9803 as well. No change.

[Edit 2] I wouldn't need to sign up anywhere beforehand, would I? My username and password are already in in the text file. But maybe its the case. Maybe we can discuss this further on MSN, you can contact me on msn at pcfamily2 *at* epix.net

Cheers,
Preston

Hi Mike,
I'm thinking about doing a floating eyeball as you may or may not know... *cough*myidea*cough*
But I also am debating against wheather to do a floating eyeball, which I'lll probably not be able to model very well-ly, or this humanoid at this thread:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=29395&b=2

I'll probably not be able to see your post..... since i'm leaving.

But suggestions would be appreciated.... or you could just model me a floating eyeball, and I'll do my best to texture it.

Here's a quick eye, all I could do on short notice... Only 192 faces.

When I get back I could make it better and get rid of the spikey things, and put a little vein thing, but no time now, I gotta go.

I'll take suggestions from everyone, but you wont hear my reply in at least a week.

Whatever you can do best would be great, just try to do the best job possible. Whenever you're finished, if you plan on submitting the eyeball, let me know for I can help you out on the animations. Feel free to use more polygons as well to make things as attractive as possible.

Out of context thats quite hysterical! Actually its funny in-context as well

@Preston,
No theres no signup beforehand. I am behind a firewall and not having any issues here. Thats strange...It sounds like the connection is accepted...

Doble check that the text file looks like this:
Nickname
Password
URL
Port

without any extra line breaks, whitespace, or weird characters - edit in notepad, not word (in case you were)

also try pinging the url from a command prompt.
PING url name as it appears in the file

Also, have you tried again?

I dont have msn but I will be in irc for a bit now...

A) Everything in the file is just like it was supposed to be
B) I rarely use word, and when I do, its never for this kind of thing. I've been used to using notepad for things like this for a long while. I'm not an idiot you know

Quote: "also try pinging the url from a command prompt."

Heres what came up:

Its weird that I can ping it, but it won't connect.

Quote: "I dont have msn but I will be in irc for a bit now..."

For the past few months I've tried as hard as I could to stay away from anything relating to the DB IRC chat room. Except for a few slip ups, and a few times I needed to connect to the network to contact someone (like TheDarthster and the devilspawn Lagmaster) I've been succesful in this. Guess I'll just have to miss out on this program.

Cheers,
Preston

Sad to hear that. Not sure why this is happening to you, although those ping times seem a little high...I avg 60ms here.

No one else has mentioned any problems, like this or otherwise - luckily. Maybe if anyone has this issue we will find a way to get to the bottom of it. I am stumped atm.

sorry

Your model, will be your model for your own use.

The problem lies when 100 people have 100 unique models, thus bloating the download sizes for people. There will be some kind of generic character creation system to hopefully keep people from all looking the same.

Magellan, If someone really puts a lot of time into there model, I will recognise that and work something out so they're unique. Perhaps members who spend more time in the DB 3D chat will earn this privilage.

Ocean Runner, do you get the "rconnected" message?

Preston Chaderton, run Telnet and see if you can connect through that, just type: "open <IP> <Port>" - sorry, I can't remember what the IP or Port is at the moment (and I can't download CR's zip to check), but it's the same ones as in the text file.

Also CattleRustler, have you got Debugging enabled for my Winsock plugin? If not, then maybe you should enable it to see if Preston is getting any errors from that.

It connects just fine. Not sure what I'm supposed to do from then on, so I just typed in Anyone there and hit enter.

And it seems I'm not the only one who has these problems.

I'm not sure what you mean HZence. Are you talking about Idle Animations? If so, you have two slots of 60 frames to make an idle animation. Actually though, I might change the 30 frames for punch to idle. That maybe a better idea.

[EDIT] Ok, the former frames used for punch have been changed to IDLE animation frames.(If you still want a punch animation, use the other 120 frames)

Don't worry, it's solved. My guess is the people with those problems don't have the fastest computers, correct?

Basically the client has to wait until it finishes connecting to the server, on fast computers it waited long enough but on slower computers it obviously didn't.

From now on there will be another 'option' in the textfile that sets how long to wait (in Milliseconds) so you can make that larger if it doesn't work.

don't knwo how far you've got on the technical side but I have written an auto patcher system using ftp using md5 filechecks and also a single key encryption system based on tea if you want the source for a head start in those areas.

If you have been having trouble connecting...

Ok the client is now updated to allow you to extend your login timeout value. It is the fifth line in the COMMDATA.TXT file. It is defaulted to 500 milliseconds, which was how it was hard coded. If you have trouble connecting try extending the LAST value in the text file in 500 increments, until you can successfully connect. New exe is below (careful it contains a default commdata.txt that will overwrite yours if you unzip to same place. Retain your name and password from the one you have - this is your account info)
