I heard somewhere that Malcom Young is better, but he gets too drunk and makes a fool out of himself so decided to play rhythm.

Mike McCready.

I have utmost respect for anyone who'll happily improvise halfway through a guitar solo in front of thousands of people. Rearviewmirror is a great example of his mastery.

Head (ex-KoRn) may have gotten a mention if he hadn't gone faggot on us.

I heard Yngwie and Steve made a tour or band of some sort with Joe Satriani called G3, search for it in yahoo and you get anime, lol.

Sounds good, downloading his songs now.

Did you guys hear the Halo 2 theme by Steve Vai? It sounds good; a guitar version of the orchestra original version (was used in the game though) but it sounds kind of easy to play, even I might play it.

OK guys, what about Brad Delson? Lol

EDIT: yes I might like LP, but after I heard more of what rock is all about, turns out he plays good stuff, but im guessing he has no clues about soloing at all, or maybe he did but Mike thought it wouldn't fit into the genre (Nu-Metal) ? Hmm...

yea I also heard rumours that they had some sort of band thing going on at one point >,>... hmm

Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen are in my opinion two of the best in the world, because they pioneered so many techniques that other guitarists use today. if it wasnt for these two i dont believe most of those above would even be around .

I do love jimmy page though as well, not as skilled as the above, (still very skilled though) but he can make his guitar meld into plants voice and sometimes i cant tell where the guitar stops and robert plant begins.

Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist (especially soloist) that I knew, now that there are some new progressive rock guys around, I feel they are beginning to outskill Jimi Hendrix, sadly. Which might call for a new best guitarist...

Since the title of this thread is "Who's your favourite guitarist?" it wouldn't matter much, would it? It's about style and not about speed and technique.

I have to say, either Vai or Satriani, I quite like Eric Sardinas' style too.

I'm looking forward to Satriani's concert on the 18th, should be cool. I saw Vai in October with Sardinas opening it, it was awesome, I got Sardinas' signature!

Hey Guys, was just browsing through this [href]www.vai.com[/href] and I found this

Quote: "
One day there was this band playing at our school. The guys in the band were a year or so older than us but ultra cool. They were the greasers and considered the top of the food chain, they even smoked pot. When I saw them playing in our school, I thought nothing was as cool as they were and to be walking down the same hallway as them was a rare privilege! (God, what a geek I was).

One time they were playing in the music room and my whole grade was watching. They took a break and I went up to one of their guitars that was standing on a stand. I had never played a guitar, just looking at it made me nervous. It was such a sultry and sexy instrument. It was hip and cool and too good for me. This gives you an idea of my lack of confidence at that age, I really had a low self esteem and was embarrassed to be seen even next to the guitar because it was so cool. I'm trying to relay what it felt like from an insecure 12 year old's point of view. I was afraid of the guitar in a weird way.

Anyway, I seemed to go into a trance as I moved towards the guitar on the stand. I was just praying nobody would see me. Finally I was brought back to reality by the voice of one of the snotty school kids, said in a mean sarcastic voice, "Hey Vai, what are you doing near that guitar, what do you think, you could be in this group or something?"

Everyone started to laugh and I just about threw up from embarrassment. Can you imagine?

Anyway, the next day I was at another friend's house, Richard Jankowski, and he had a cheap guitar on the wall of his bedroom. It was very cool, red with a whole lot of buttons. He said he would sell it to me for $5. I don't know how I got the money but I did. I didn't dare tell anybody that I was going to play the guitar.

Frank Stroshol and I decided to take guitar lessons from this wild guy in town named Joe Satriani. He could really play, I mean really play, but that's another story. I dutifully attended lessons and absorbed them. They were my whole life but I still would not dare tell anybody for the fear they would laugh or ridicule me.
"

Turns out Joe Satriani is Steve's mentor! And I thought Steve was the best there was.

Absolutely not! Just over-rated. He's still way better than most guitarist's in the world.

I also forgot to mention The guy from Black Sabbath. Whatshisface Iommi. My sister can play the solo from NIB blindfold. Excellent song. Out of interest, does anyone know how much of Sabbaths greatness was Iommi, and how much was Ozzy Osbourne?

The problem with Jimi Hendrix is that he was a great guitarist but he couldn't sing, so it is painful to listen to him playing the guitar.

Jimmy Page

I don't think his songs need proper singing when they have the guitar parts. And I think Fire's drum part sounds awesome despite its simplicity.

How you didn't know that is beyond me. But Steve and Joe are about the same on my list, because although Steve's licks are great, and his music is emotional, and his styles are never ending, Joe seems to be able to create simpler yet effective melodies and doesnt need the extreme virtuosity (listen to Cryin' by Joe... magnificent). I think these two guitarists surpass just about everyone else, because they made their name and their place without needing to say what they were feeling, they expressed all emotions through the guitar. Not to mention they're fun as well.

Herman Li of Dragonforce is beyond interesting, though. Don't like Dragonforce, but their melodies are fun and quick.

And Malmsteen should fall in a pit with Billie Joe.

Malmsteen has great instrumentals, but all of the songs with vocals suck. I've never been able to get into Joe Satriani or Steve Vai either. It's a shame because I quite like technically good guitarists.

Chris and Michael Amott are excellent too.

Another good guitarist to check out is Nuno Bettencourt from the band Extreme. He's kind of like a modern day Jimi Hendrix, and his style gets you into the music, while still delivered with virtuosity. One of the best bands to walk the earth, IMO.

EDIT: Check out Peacemaker Die from Extreme to get a good gist of them. =)

The majority of left handed guitarists play on a right handed guitar, because its more how you learn than anything. If that impresses you, check out Micheal Angelo Batio.

There are a ton of great guitarists out there, and it looks like most are already listed here except one.

Peter Frampton

They made this awesome song called Fury of the storm, its great, demonstrates awesome lightspeed guitars (the whole song is played at a quick solo's speed) Honestly, the music doesnt exactly come to logic until it reaches the chorus (2 minuites later). Its like, they have awesome skills, but they're making use of it I guess the wrong way (no offence to any fans, just talking about my point of view)I prefer songs with logical melodies, no matter how simple. And is it true that some of the world's best solo pieces are performed randomly? Or are the artists really reciting what they have just read of tabs and chords?

Quote: "Most amazing thing about Hendrix is he was left handed, but played on a right handed guitar.

Yup. Im left handed, and I play the right one, I believe its the left hand (for right handers) that does the hard work, while the right hand (strumming hand) simply strums in a specific pattern, I think it should be right-handed guitars for lefties and left-handed guitars for right handed guys. I couldnt play it upside down though..lol.

Sometimes they just mess around and do things that sound good, if you notice their techniques, you'll hear a lot of the same things in their solos, and one of them just happens to blend a lot better. Sweet Child o Mine for instance, was nothing new for Slash, you can hear that kind of playing in his other solos, but the chord progression and emotion of the song makes it sound so much better. If you make your own lead over Joe Satriani's Cryin', you'll be able to get the same emotion out of your solo (just maybe not as skilled up as his ). Solos are more or less random in that way, but the mindset during it is to attack a certain emotion.

Yeah, my sister could do that when she was 13. Apparently its not actually as hard as it looks. I think the difficult part is changing frets whilst still keeping the guitar balanced.

Quote: "Its like, they have awesome skills, but they're making use of it I guess the wrong way (no offence to any fans, just talking about my point of view)I prefer songs with logical melodies"

They do have logical melodies , just not in that song. The other great thing about dragonforce, though is that the vocals are always really catchy. So even if the guitar riff isn't catchy enough, there are about 3 different verse melodies and at least one chorus each as catchy as the last to make up for it.

EDIT

Quote: "Lol ok. Any of you guys know any solo-writing techniques ?

Some guitarists improvise a solo every time. Others improvise untill they find something that fits. Others will sit down and write it note by note like a book. In my band, we've used all three at some point. It really depends on the song and the guitarist.

Erm, actually I think most people would agree that the difficulty in that is in what is being played.

Hell, I could do it, just don't expect any sort of tune .

It's impressive as hell when they just start playing like that, but perfectly. This is pearl jam, one of the biggest touring groups ever, when you've played a song a million times, playing it behind your head while improvising solos and extensions, and keep with the rest of the group - name 200,000 guitarists that could do that. They can only do that because of the thousands of live performances.

On another note though, IMO most over-rated guitarist ever would be The Edge from U2 - damn I hate that guy, gonna put a landmine under one of his effects pedals.

Well, we have two guitarists. My sister is the better player, the other is the better song writer. We have no snobbery over who writes what, so sometimes the rhythm guitarist will write my sisters solo. It just depends on who choses to do it.

Normally, I think the rhythm guitarist writes with a keyboard and guitar. What ever he (or any of us) comes up with gets recorded to midi on guitar pro. The file then gets sent round to the rest of the band, and we just build on it. The rhythm guitarist takes a slow perfectionist approach, getting every note to sound perfect. My sister will take a different approach, and improvise to the midi, and write her solo that way. It really depends on the song and who's writing it though. We never write as a band because we can't write under pressure. We work better when we're at home on our own with no time limitations.

If my sister hasn't learned the solo in time, she'll improvise a temporary one (which can become permanent) in band practise. Live, she also tends to add in extra slides and run downs here and there too.

I read somewhere that Slash improvises around a set template every time, so evcery time he plays a solo, it will sound similar but slightly different. I think I heard that the guy from sum 41 (not one of my favourite bands, but I'm ashamed to admit that I do have a soft spot for them) writes his note-by-note. Don't quote me on this though, I can't remember where I heard it so it may be complete rubbish.

So there you go. If you want to learn more about guitar solos, ask a guitarist. I'm just an average drummer.

Quote: "On another note though, IMO most over-rated guitarist ever would be The Edge from U2 - damn I hate that guy, gonna put a landmine under one of his effects pedals."

U2 are over-rated full stop.

IceBound Melodic rock/metal band with loads of lead guitar, clean female vocals, and more guitars! What more could you want?
