I would run a VM of Windows XP, only trouble is I don't have an XP disk. I could buy one, but at the moment, it's much cheaper to emulate it in Linux. Come to think of it, I wonder if I can download XP Mode for Win 8 Pro? I had it on Win 7 Pro - though I found Virtual PC wasn't very good. I know there's better VM software out there (maybe the VMplayer you mentioned is better).
But for other things I do use DOSBox and SCUMMVM.
However, I am perfectly content in dual booting Windows 8 Pro and Ubuntu and running PlayOnLinux and Wine. Plus, boot times are pretty quick on both OS's.

Plus it gives Linux more of a purpose than being a backup OS should anything go wrong and I need to recover my data.

Apparently GOG has made it Windows 8 compatible, at least judging from the listed compatible OS's.
