Still loving Windows 8...but I am disappointed that MS does drop support for some things at every OS upgrade. Trying to run Neverwinter Nights ended up being really sluggish, to be fair, never tried it in Windows 7, but I'm using the GOG.com version now, which is supposed to be Windows 7 friendly, so I am taking this as a natural assumption that it would have work for me in Win 7. The other conclusion would be drivers.

But tried running it on Wine in Ubuntu? Runs damn good, glitchy sometimes, but I know how to wipe the glitches whenever they do appear (which isn't very often). Never thought I'd boot up Linux for the extra compatibility.

So far, Neverwinter Nights is the only old game in my collection I've had trouble running. Dunno what to try next...Shogun? Not sure if my disk even works anymore. Last time I played it I was still running Windows 98

Your compatibility issue may be solveable without rebooting, depending on your hardware. There's an application call VMPlayer (it's a virtual machine, a PC emulator). It's simple and easy to use. You just create a new vm, shove your XP (or other old os) disc in the drive (you can install from an iso too) and then you install, reboot and run. It's memeworthy really: Yo dawg I here you like PCs so I put a PC in your PC... I use VMs a lot for testing apps and for inspecting new versions/flavours of Linux, ReactOS, etc. I actually took my win8 tour on a VM to save me the hassle of installing and uninstalling it (which I did quite soon as you know). VMs are really great for running older games (although I use DOSBOX for the really old stuff because it's low-footprint), provided your machine has the specs. I havent played Neverwinter Nights but seem to recall it being around some time in the early 2000s so I would think any gaming PC could easily run it VMed. Also VMs can be given an internet connection and physical peripherals can be connected to the VM via a "go-betweener" that VMPlayer uses. You may need to download VM Tools too but it won't take long.

I would run a VM of Windows XP, only trouble is I don't have an XP disk. I could buy one, but at the moment, it's much cheaper to emulate it in Linux. Come to think of it, I wonder if I can download XP Mode for Win 8 Pro? I had it on Win 7 Pro - though I found Virtual PC wasn't very good. I know there's better VM software out there (maybe the VMplayer you mentioned is better).

But for other things I do use DOSBox and SCUMMVM.

However, I am perfectly content in dual booting Windows 8 Pro and Ubuntu and running PlayOnLinux and Wine. Plus, boot times are pretty quick on both OS's. Plus it gives Linux more of a purpose than being a backup OS should anything go wrong and I need to recover my data.

Apparently GOG has made it Windows 8 compatible, at least judging from the listed compatible OS's.

I don't know if they release the patches, but I doubt it. I ended up biting the bullet and paying for Neverwinter Nights again, but through GOG, just because I can't find the original disks, I've found my expansion packs though.

However, GOG.com isn't that expensive, definitely worth it for some of the awesome titles on there.

None of the VM software is good for 3D stuff, though VirtualBox's 2D is decent IIRC. VMWare's Workstation software is the best in the industry, but I've never tried to run a 3D game on it.

Ah, yes, I keep forgetting what that's like as I have slow boot times so I find it a hassle. I actually want my next PC to have a high-speed SSD. Unfortunately I'm stuck with a laptop atm and it's not worth upgrading it when I can rather save up to build a nice desktop.

What happened to that awesome-looking PonyCraft sig? The artwork was awesome^awesome (That's a high factor of awesomeness but the English language lacks adequate descriptors so it must be expressed in this manner).

Hehe, I know your pain. I've had the whole issue of boot times plenty of times before. Particularly on 98, XP and Vista. 7, 8 and Ubuntu on the other hand, never had that issue - I'm sure it'd be faster on a desktop, but I am pretty happy with the boot times I've had.

Planetside 2 is pretty dang fun! Uses Call of Duty style gameplay with RTS strategy elements. Huge battles, pretty good vehicle combat and fairly well-balanced.

I'm playing just because of the pure scale of the game. Each hex tile is about the size of a medium Call of Duty map, and there at least 40, probably more, hex tiles on a continent.
