Why should Microsoft dictate how you manage your projects? Store libs and headers where you want, it doesn't matter apart from in the case of Linux dorks that force everyone to compile their software instead of just providing a binary.

As for conventions on where applications and data should be placed, yes such documents exist, though it takes a bit of searching to find them. If people had followed conventions there wouldn't have been so much fuss when UAC was implemented.

Could you elaborate on that?"

Because of permissions, you can't write to "Program Files [(x86)]" without jumping through an MS-hoop. So it's becoming a trend to install older stuff to "%userprofile%/MyApp/" for example. As you said in your most recent post "had people followed the spec..." but people's behavior is always undefined.

Look, Linux isn't ideal or necessarily always consistent. However I it hides it better because of package management and db/config files. Consequently, removing software completely is much more easily achievable without affecting other components, behavior is more predictable, integration is easier, etc.

Personally I think that shared objects are redundant because modern hardware has the capacity to store 10 copies of the same D3D libs, 1 for each game. I'm all for full modularity: big-ass apps that eat disk space because they keep all their dependencies in their directory. I also like the idea of "jailing" apps. Modular systems would be great but I do acknowledge the argument about bloat, too.

Remember to vote nASA as we're the most elaborate party!

Only losers vote for other parties. Don't be a loser; vote nASA and save yourself the humiliation of being labeled a loser.

But that's exactly the problem all package managers solve. The only reason this is even an issue is because Windows is a useless pile of crap when it comes to managing dependencies.

If you install a game on Linux, the package manager builds a dependency tree and installs everything the game requires without fuss.

Windows does this awkward thing where the majority of all software is shipped with all dependencies packaged into an installer. The result is that they are usually humongous in size.

So my argument is: Shared objects are great in an ideal world where everything declares its dependencies, and I think that's a much better solution to work towards than packaging redundant software.

[EDIT] If anyone here happens to be developing a cross platform multi-player RTS game using the lockstepping network model, you may want to check this out: http://gafferongames.com/networking-for-game-programmers/floating-point-determinism/

If you're getting software from a repository, and you're not on Gentoo, then you're getting a binary. If it's outside of the repository, then it's quite hard to provide binaries due to the different versions of libs that the application relies on. A commonly run into problem is that libc or X.Org is not new enough or old enough for the application to run as it is expecting a certain version.

Basically if you stick to the repositories you'll almost never have to deal with compiling from source. And even if you do compile from source it's rarely more than './configure' followed by a 'make install' or 'make all'.

Now if you want to gripe about Linux, there's nothing quite as bad as dealing with video drivers. Especially the proprietary ones. Such a pain in my ***.

I have never seen anyone voted anything else!! Perhaps you could be voted a valued member, or maybe even a community leader? I'm sure the site admins wouldn't mind putting a badge on you if you did get voted into one of those positions.

Well I don't think it would be so much a matter of the mods' agreement. If a majority of regular forum folk voted you to that status, the mods would be morally obliged to give you the badge. I think.

So you're getting it backwards. UAC is a problem for people because they aren't following standards (and are writing to protected directories), not the other way around.

It really would be if it was more flexible and open. In fact years back, before I got into Linux, I was considering it for the better security model. I'm glad I got into Linux though, I learned more having to do things the hard way and I also discovered the joys (and costs) of building your own system. There's probably an alternate universe where I only own a Mac.

Quote: " So my argument is: Shared objects are great in an ideal world where everything declares its dependencies... "

And it's an argument I agree with. However, this is not a perfect world. We're at a point where storage is no issue. Modularity has other benefits: libanana6 need not have legacy support for libanana3, for example. You may find that OpenGL, for example, would have a lot less bloat if they didn't try and maintain compatibility.

Quote: "Now if you want to gripe about Linux, there's nothing quite as bad as dealing with video drivers."

And wireless drivers and soundcard drivers.

Quote: " So you're getting it backwards. UAC is a problem for people because they aren't following standards..."

Which is exactly what I said and why I said that if Xenix had been favoured over MSDOS, it wouldn't have been an issue.

Hi I'm new here. I didn't know where to post a greeting thread bcoz there isn't a place like on other forums. Anyway i just wanted to say hi and introduce myself and this seems to be a thread to post anything you want so i think it's safe here.
So hello everyone. I'm a beginner programmer and i only use windows but i see hear you all hate it. I agree windows 8 is dreadful but i really love 7. For me 7 is the best ever and i don't think i will change. Mac is too expensive and linux is not user friendly at all, even ubuntu and linux mint.

Guys this is a new surprise, Fallout 2 works WAY BETTER on Windows 8.1 than 7. I don't even have to download the monotonous unofficial patches and replay the game. I think Microsoft is listening to us gamers.

I find it really weird that some older games work better on an unofficial windows "emulator" than on a new version of windows

Hi wasp, your posts won't show up immedietly while you are on post moderation. The system is there to avoid spam but if you post normally, the moderation will be turned off soon.

The posting competition is pretty simple. Every 10 posts give you points (next one is 41,830 then 41840). You get more points for posts that are divisible by 50 give more points, posts divisible by 100 gives even more and so on. If you doublepost, you will loose half of your points so try not to do that. Every 50 posts counts as a page and can be claimed. The first person to make a post containing the word "page" after 50 posts will get some extra points

I completely disagree with you on that statement and it's highly offensive. GTFO (the F stands for "Frick" in this forum).

Also, why am I stuck waiting for a bus nearly an hour after arriving when there's supposed to be one each 20 minutes? Logically there should have been 3. Is this a grand bus conspiracy against me? There's a creepy kid staring at me, too. If I stared like that at him I'd be locked up. You go figure.

Edit: My bad, it's been ~45 minutes, I arrived 9ish.

Yes I do. But it ain't a bus stop, it's a station. City of Cape Town wanted to have better public transport. They can't afford an underground -- or any decent trains -- so they brought in the Rapid Transport system which are buses with their own lanes. There are stops and stations and it runs off cards.

Guys, the best Anime character is quite clearly Viral, Haruka Harahura, Simon the Digger, or Spike Spiegel.

Or Faye Valentine...Nonon Jakuzure...Nui Harime...

I got into Anime during my hiatus, please don't hurt me! xD

I really liked Viral as an enemy turned friend, but it's that little moment where you see his dream world of a wife and kid that really sets his character apart for me. Especially with his immortality.

When Kamina died, I was...well, very, very sad. A little worse with Kittan due to how incredibly epic his outro was.

No you're totally right. I only like ponies. I sit in my mom's basement wearing a fedora and sip a glass of red wine while I enjoy the latest episode, wondering how anyone could ever watch anything else other than My Little Pony and why I have such class. Girls love neck beards and mine is as fluffy as ever.

[/sarcasm]

Nah man, I like loads of things other than ponies. Ponies is simply a huge focal point of mine because I like controversial things.

I just finished watching Redline, I love over dramatic animation. It's on the same level as Kill La Kill as far as animation goes.
