I guess there is one character like that, and there's also a character who I swear is Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.

Oh man, my criteria is anything as good as Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann, or Kill la Kill. Basically anything with quality.

Gurren Lagann is one of the few things I've watched that ends so damn well. Not in a Hollywood happily-ever-after, tidy away the loose ends way, but a genuinely bittersweet way that really tugged at the heartstrings. (That wedding!)

I believe the inclusion of a Spike Spiegel and Nui Harime has sold me Comet, I shall watch Redline. xD

Cowboy Bebop is pretty good. I plan on purchasing the movie. I wish they had it on Netflix. Have you ever seen Ninja Scroll?

Why has no one written a Python wrapper for DBP yet?

@Seditious
Quote: "Why should Microsoft dictate how you manage your projects?"

Because otherwise there would be total chaos and all devs would be in a world of pain where no project is coherent with any other!

Oh wait... Good golly, that's actually the case if you're a Windows developer! I wonder why?

Quote: "Store libs and headers where you want, it doesn't matter apart from in the case of Linux dorks that force everyone to compile their software instead of just providing a binary."

What? Linux package managers only supply binaries. You never have to compile anything yourself on linux unless you're a developer. And even then you can download binary versions of your dependencies.

I'm sorry, but throwing headers and libs wherever you want is asking for trouble and is retarded. Go and compile some software on both OSs and see for yourself why Windows sucks before you make claims like that.

I have only had to compile 4 things myself on linux and those are diffirent graphics engines which I wanted newer versions of than those in the ubuntu repos.

I have been tempted to compile wine myself to allow me to have many diffirent versions of it running but playonlinux handles that for me instead

PyOGRE (I think it got canned though it will make a comeback) and PyGame (built on SDL but I'm sure there'll be an SDL2 ver if there isn't already). Ren'Py that Visual Novel software I posted the IDE of in your "Post your IDE(S)" thread is based on PyGame, iirc. Now Python (when not compiled -- which it originally was not, being an interpreted language) is potential overhead. Can you imagine a DBPro app being bottlenecked even further by an arbitrator between the py scripts and the DBPro core libs.

Buuuut, if you want, start a git for it with Dark GDK since DGDK is allegedly now open source or abandoned or whatever. I'm not too offey with Python because I gave it a bash years back before it was cool and quit, telling my one mate (who's a Linux sysadmin) "I can't make proper games and apps with this". We don't talk about that now I have begun relearning Python on/off lately (it has changed a lot) since I'm gonna be using Ren'Py -- eventually -- and it allows Python scripts alongside its R'py scripts.

*shudder*

Hmm, well then maybe a python plugin for exposing DBP functions to Python. I think that would be pretty awesome. I've never written a plugin before but I'm tempted to do that.

I'm sorry but if you can't remember where you store your own project files you shouldn't be using a computer let alone programming on it.

Wrong, so wrong. In my time using Linux I have had to (attempt to) compile many things myself, mostly non-mainstream stuff instead of text editors, calculators, and music players, though.

Lol then you're doing it wrong. And even if you did have to compile software, it's 3 commands and that's it ("configure", "make", "make install"). If that's too hard for you then consider me impressed.

Quote: "I'm sorry but if you can't remember where you store your own project files you shouldn't be using a computer let alone programming on it."

You're missing the point entirely.

This is about global coherence, not about your ability to remember where you stored things on your computer. If the way software is built is standardised, it's extremely easy to set up automated building and test and integration servers that plug directly into version control. And let's not forget it's easier for other developers to understand what you're doing as well.

See those 3 commands above? That only works because every software package agreed on certain standards.

Why doesn't that exist for Windows? Because Microsoft hasn't clearly defined how to build software.

I guess I'm just really frustrated at Windows because I'm trying to automate the build process of my project and Windows is making this nearly impossible to do. The dependency tree is:

On linux this can be done in an hour or so, on Windows I've relentlessly been trying to get it to work for a week or so now.

And then it complains that it's missing X, so you try installing X and this breaks something else and gives more errors, etc. etc. It's just much better to provide a binary and then we don't have these issues.

It wasn't my favorite to be honest. The plot was very complicated and I felt the movie didn't have enough time to flesh it all out which resulted it it feeling a little abrupt/rushed through. But this is how I end up feeling about most movies I watch. I'm a series person for that reason. It's also hard to rate it fairly because what I saw was an English dub and the voice acting was crap. I can't stand dubs of foreign film. It's off-putting. I'd rather deal with the worst fansubs than a dub. If you like ninja/samurai/etc anime of yester times, you'd probably enjoy Kenshin, too (the original mini series). If you want something modern, check out Sword of the Stranger. Animation is very pretty.

Quote: "Kill la Kill"

I must be the only person who has not seen this series. But I'm probably the only person who's seen "NHK ni Youkuso" (Welcome to the NHK?) which is really worth a watch. It's hated by most people but IMHO it was very deep and really delves into human (esp geek) psychology with a few good laughs... Actually, I could list loads of series that I'd bet points not one person here has seen since I like the obscure stuff

You guys are busy here even on the weekends! Maybe i still have away to go before being a real geek (tell that to my parents though).

Quote: "Btw, Kamina > Simon, IMHO. Viral was cool, too. Haruka was cool, but Lucy is better. Mikasa is pretty cool too.
"

Simon won ultimately. Yes kamina was cool but I think simon became stronger.
Haruka is annoying. I said that already i think. She's not a very decent person either. She uses people to get what she wants. She only lives for herself.
Lucy, i don't like because she's a psycho. She's the bad guy no matter how you look at it. What she did was unforgivable and if you had the power to kill someone like that who did that in front of you then you would.
Mikasa is okay. She isn't very strong as a character until near the end. She's a bit like a robot.

Quote: "No you're totally right. I only like ponies. I sit in my mom's basement wearing a fedora and sip a glass of red wine while I enjoy the latest episode, wondering how anyone could ever watch anything else other than My Little Pony and why I have such class. Girls love neck beards and mine is as fluffy as ever."

Ha ha ha ha ha. Sorry, i didn't actually mean it like that. I was just surprised because i met a few bronies before and they all seemed to think mlp was the only show worth watching. There was a guy who said he'd watched both seasons 3 times. I think maybe some of them are like how you described. I watched the first 2 episodes and then i just thought it's not for me. Maybe i was put off already or maybe i just found it too childish.

Quote: "@all - Thoughts on Attack on Titan?"

Wasp, you're delusional. Lucy is a Goddess, the embodiment of the most exquisite pain, love and violence known to the anime world. You should read the manga, it is much better than the series. Also, Erren is not emo. He gets filled with rage and determination. If you want emo, see Shinji.

In other news I was inspired to set my terminal transparent by the one and only Comet in the IDE thread. I'm liking it already, especially wirh no borders, window decorations, scrollbar or menu bar.

I have no idea what's going on.

As for transparent terminals, I've always liked it that way, that's how I've setup console2. I just wish that I could get console2 to be the default cmd on windows.

All this talk about IDEs and programming lately has made me want to get back into coding. Just as a hobby, not a full-time interest.

So, I've decided to learn Python, because it's a language I've been interested in for ages and it kind of feels similar to my early days of programming in DarkBASIC.

I've found this site to be quite useful, and I'll probably use it for C# as well.

Also, I'm using Jetbrains' "PyCharm" IDE, which is brilliant. I absolutely love it.

I've really never been able to get into Linux - maybe one day.

Also, I'm writing a game in C++ that I hope will have awesome multiplayer (co-op and versus); If anyone has experience of building a 'game engine' of sorts - ie, an abstraction of graphics, input, sound, physics and networking libraries into game objects and the likes - do you think it's better to design the entire engine around multiplayer networking and have it built right into the core, or write it as singleplayer and write the multiplayer component afterwards?

The former, definitely. You can abstract a lot of it away so you write the SP as if it were MP, and it's much simpler to manage.

@Yodaman Jer - Awesome choice for a language! Python is the most elegant and powerful scripting language I've ever come across. I highly recommend reading through this here: http://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/

Especially "4 Python Tutorial in PDF" - it gives you a great overview of everything you need to know.

Use an existing engine and don't re-invent the wheel. http://urho3d.github.io/

Urho3D has physics, navmesh pathfinding, audio, input, etc. all wrapped into a easy to use scripting front end.

Where's the fun? To be honest I'm more interested in writing the engine than I am the actual game. I want some experience with tying all these components together whilst keeping them independent of one another.

This was my thought too, I figure if I can make a co-op campaign for example, the single player would be exactly the same except without the networking.
