As much as I fell in love with Unreal Engine 4, I definitely still prefer Unity, if for no other reason than the Web Player. Also, scripting in C# is pretty flippin' cool!
It's too bad a pro license is $1.5k, though...
Guys, I'm so torn. This happens about 4 times a year...
For a couple of months, I just KNOW that I want to spend all of my free time programming and making a cool game, and becoming a relatively well-known game maker. Then I lose motivation, and I just KNOW that I want to spend all of my free time writing screenplays and making films for a living. Then I realize that I can't possibly fit that into my finances and don't really have a shot until I buy more gear, which will take a pretty long time... so then I go back to just KNOWING that I want to spend my free time developing games, and so on and so on...
It's a circle that's been going round and round for the better part of a decade, and is EXACTLY why I haven't gone to school - because if I choose one and then get halfway through only to want to switch, it would cost "hella cash" and I'd hate myself forever. Also, America's financial aid system hates me and my family for whatever reason, as I've been denied EVERY YEAR SINCE I WAS 17.
However, I think I know how I can successfully do BOTH of these hobbies together, and make them into a hybrid career.
If I start a multimedia "company", one that produces videos/films and games, and they were both entertaining, it could be a pretty interesting thing. I know it would be difficult, but luckily I know a lot of talented people who would be able to help and I may even eventually be able to pay! I'm also only two people away from personally meeting George Lucas, so that could even be beneficial. How, you ask? I know one of the make-up artists who helped prototype some stuff for "The Phantom Menace" back in the '90s. He didn't personally meet George Lucas, but the person he worked with did.
I don't know. I'd love to pursue both movies and games as a career, as they both have had integral parts in making me who I am. Arguably, games can be more entertaining and more educational, but certain movies can have the same effect. Both take a lot of work and commitment.
I think it's doable, provided I get the proper help.
