Same here. It would be an unfortunate end to 4+ years here.

Quote: "To lose a now-sizable chunk of the community's (at least in GC) participation due to the inability of certain users to adhere to the AUP feels backwards to me."
Agreed well, and this is where my idea of restricting this thread to users who can handle it comes from. In further support of my idea, I like to look at it this way: being able to post random, off topic content on a forum, especially a forum that serves as advertisement for a company, is quite the privilege. Therefore, it makes sense to limit that privilege to those who can handle it, instead of allowing those who can't to take the privilege away from everybody.

Sure, banning specific users from a specific thread seems barbaric, but if looked at from that particular point of view, maybe it has some value?

But, above all, we do indeed have Clonkex, who is dedicated to keeping things chill around here. For that, we can be pretty thankful. The man is a savior to this thread. Clonkex for Forum President June 2015!!!!

Honestly it's pretty sad that the reason people stick around is just for the Posting Competition.

TGC hasn't given up on everything, they're just too busy trying to support too many things at once. FPSC, AppGameKit V2, and *maybe* a secret DarkBASIC Elite program.

Remember when this thread was locked the first time, suddenly a LOT more threads appeared in Geek Culture? One was by me, another by TheComet, and a few other random ones. Sure, I understand the appeal of this thread, and I'm not saying it should definitely be locked, I was just agreeing that it seems likes there's been more issues with it lately than in the past.

I do agree with Clonkex's last post though, particularly the penultimate sentence.

Sad how? Sad that I don't want to throw away 6 years of being part of this community? I may not use any of TGC's products at the moment, but if a new Dark Basic came out that fixed some of the underlying problems that DBP as a language suffered from, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. I just have no interest in AppGameKit or FPSC Reloaded. *shrug*

My dream new DBP would have proper support for structs(function passing, etc) and would compile down to LLVM/GCC bytecode rather than straight to machine code. As well as a bunch of other stuff, but this is the more important stuff.

Yeah, me too, which is why I suggest removal of the user rather than the thread.

Yeah, but they won't stay long. You'll get a few threads initially, but then people will get bored of creating new threads that have to have a topic and start to move away. It will be sad.

It might stimulate more activity in old boards like DBP and even produce more activity in the AppGameKit boards.

But who knows, some people might disappear forever, like Grandma, Alucard94, Venge, Omega Game 89, and Bizar Guy. I miss those people, they made this thread fun

EDIT:

Already having way more fun in AppGameKit than I've had with Unity in a long time. Playing around with the gravity example is proving to be not only easy, but ridiculously entertaining as well!

DA CODEZ:

lol just realized I'm getting the sprite's y position but storing in a variable named curPositionX.

As others have stated, the posting comp is the biggest reason I stay around, mostly because I am now on linux and can't use any TGC products. I like the mix of random nonsense and usefull discussions, sure, it's annoying when you have to go through 2 pages of nonsense to get to something usefull but it's better than the thread falling down the list. Also, there have been lots of times where I have wanted to discuss something or get help with C++ where my topic is to slim to make a new thread for. I mostly see this thread as a chat where people post whatever is on their mind.

To me it seems like most people who post AUP breaking things in here are repeated offenders so banning them from this thread would be a good sollution IMO.

It would drop down the GC board due to inactivity. Our discussions are pretty brief and sporadic without a defined scope. Sure, due to the decreased traffic to GC as a whole it might stick around the top page for a week or so but if it's not blue often then people won't click on it.

@Aaron Miller I want to talk to you about some matters relating to this thread, but I would like to do so over email. I'm not ready to talk about it quite yet, but I was wondering if you may PM me an email address by which I can contact you?

I bet some folks wonder what this is about... Nothing crazy, just an idea that I want to take up with Aaron before I mention it here.

I didn't know that word until I listened to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories (which is a truly excellent album!), specifically Giorgio by Moroder.

Incidentally, my money's on a massive point deduction of some kind for AUP-breaking posts

Trealy ruly it would, it would!

For the record, TheComet did actually create a Programming Competition thread a while back for non-TGC-programming-specific discussions.

How does Seppuku do it? How can he join a discussion, no matter how fragile, without ever causing a stirrup? He's always that guy who posts a long, meaningful post and everyone reads it, nods at it, agrees with it, and somehow becomes relaxed.

At least that's how I feel about it. I'm not referring to any specific post of his, but the thought came to me when I was heavily ranting in the other thread.

Incredibly true! I find myself saying and spelling things like a Brit all the time. People often ask me why I speak like I do, to which I reply, "Oh, it's just that forum I am on."

I wonder if other people tell their friends about this forum as much as I do. They all think this forum is weird for how small and niche it is, but I just tell them that there's something special about this forum. As we all know, it's hard to understand unless you've been around here for a couple years.

Seppuku really is an impressive person, just from what I have seen of him on the forums. He is rather soft I would say, but a good soft, and he seems to have a great wise head on his shoulders. He reminds me a lot of my mum (yeah, British way of saying 'mom' there), who is an incredibly special person. Seppuku for Forum President June 2015!!! Right, I already nominated Clonkex... There is something incredibly special about this forum that no other place can ever hope to reproduce. I really wish I knew it was!

Maybe it's because some of us have kind of grown up together in terms of learning programming? We feel like family? It's something along those lines, as cliched as that sounds.

I know I was sort of advocating the permanent locking of this thread, but now that we've managed to have polite, useful, civil discussion across a couple of pages, and people have pointed out just how truly useful this thread is, I no longer think it should be locked. However, in the future, should this thread encounter more problems it may end up locked anyway. :\

It's too bad you can't sticky individual pages/posts in a particular thread, we could highlight these last few pages as what the Posting Competition is capable of!

My programming has always been lax, and I have hardly ever associated with the forums here while programming, and yet I still feel the specialty of the forum. I think it is the fact that the forum is small, weird (let's be honest), somewhat traditional, and full of funny, intelligent, and generally loyal members.

No no, I agree!

Just thought this was interesting. See how the DBPro board has more threads, but less posts, than the GC board, and the GC board has more posts, but less threads, than the DBPro board:
