Is it true that PS3s aren't selling out their shipments in the US? And that Wiis are impossible to find?!?

I had always assumed that PS3s were going as soon as they came, and still going for loads on eBay?

It's all a bit weird for Europeans... we've just got so used to 360 being the best console, PS3 still seems kind of unreal...

Wii is massively popular as well, very hard to get still (but it's only been out for a few weeks and it was Christmas).

I have seen 2-3 ps3's at a few shops, but most shops have them sold out.

Where I live, it's impossible to get PS3's. A friend of mine ordered a PS3 and won't be getting it until January, or so the store says. But then they have Wiis at several of the stores around here and there's no problem finding them. But from what I understand, it's different depending on where you go. In some locations, Wiis outnumber PS3s, in other locations it's opposite. But if anyone needs a Wii, I can just go to the store and buy one for you... if you pay me obviously And maybe you could help me get my PS3!

I friend of mine has the PS3. I it running side by side with an XBox. I don't care about blue-ray, and otherwise it looked about the same (except that the lighting / normal mapping in Gears of War on the 360 was amazing). So, the 360 gets my hands down support.

In my area PS3 is on all the shelves, a kid from my class works at gamestop and told me that they have about 30 in stock and can not sell them, Best Buy near me had a case full of them 4 days before christmas and they still had them this morning when I went to use a gift card. Wii's on the other hand got hard to find a few weeks ago, places keep getting them in but sell out quick.

My best guess is that people who wanted to pay launch price for a PS3 have already, others who will eventually get it are now waiting for a price drop (good luck).

Maybe people think that paying $600 for a PS3 is outrageous when you could get the 360,Gears of War,and a couple of other games or a Wii and quite a few games for the same price or less.

Well, I personally have not seen any advertisement for the PS3, at all, anywhere! I've seen loads of ads for the Wii on the tele, showing off the nunchucka especially, and I remember seeing 360 adds (albeit not that many) on tele back when that was first released. Seen adds on hotmail ad bar, google etc too .... but NOTHING for the PS3. I didn't even know it was released, although not really into my consoles so I haven't been looking for it.

Either way, unless Sony are planning to do something in the new year, their marketing campaign (in the UK at least) has been crap. Even if it's not released in the UK yet, there should be some promotion.

Basically Sony didn't advertise the heck out of the PS3 because, in their utmost wisdom (or arrogance?) they thought people would sell their first-borns for a PS3 regardless of, well, anything of substance.

Looking around in stores here you will see PS3s on the shelves. Go figure

Hmm I guess it is regional...

Still, I wouldn't have guessed that demand would fall behind supply (in general) after only 1 million consoles...

I think Nintendo should release a Wii/DS compo pack for a slightly cut down price (officially repackaged), along with a firmware update that added a load of DS functionality (touchpad typing + wiimote pointing = awesome-to-the-max). That would sell like free money.

From reading Kotaku and Digg, it seems that while in some places you can't find PS3's in the shops in the US, in other places, there are PS3's sitting on shelves not being sold. There was even someone saying that they worked in a big department store somewhere and they put out announcements every day saying they had some PS3s in, but they still wouldn't shift.

Other people are telling stories of scalpers taking their PS3s back to the shops they bought them in to get refunds, because they can't even sell them on ebay for above retail price any more.

For those who actually want one, Ebay might be the answer - I took a peek and there seems to be a lot of auctions starting as low as $0.01, and some with no reserve still at £0.99.

I live in central Wisconsin, so this is what I've seen.

I can't find a single Wii or PS3. I guess we don't get very many. I'm trying to find a Wii, but no luck yet. I think I'll be able to get one after next week when I go back to school, in western Wisconsin. They seem to have more there. I'm laughing my head off at Sony, they pretty much shot themselves. Over. And over. And over. They made a system with power that no one will take advantage of and with features that are bad copies of better ones (they didn't do the motion sensitive thing until the Wii was announced, right?). And then they go and charge a ridiculous amount for it. The Wii isn't as powerful, but who really cares? The innovation is there. Developers want to use it. I can't wait until the next generation of all the Mario games, it's going to be awesome. No developer is going to make a game for the Wii, the PS3, and the Xbox 360, but spend more time/money and take advantage of the hardware of the PS3 anymore than the Xbox 360.

To me, it seems like Sony stood in the toilet and pulled the handle. The only thing that is keeping them from going down the drain is their big fat head.

The reason is quite simply, Nintendo appealed to everyone with their console. I was riding in the car the other day with my step sister and her grandma was driving, and she was raving about how she couldn't find one for her and her son (she tried it when my step brother and I were playing it at her house). My point? Everyone is trying to get the wii. As for the ps3, its main audience was the so called "Sony fan-boys". That's really it. While most of the hardcore gamers probably opted for the ps3, everyone else, and that is a BIG amount of people, opted for the wii.

Also note, by what I read, the ps3 cost more to produce then it retails for, so if your expecting a price drop, don't expect one for quite some time. And I do mean QUITE some time.

As Sony knew they would only start with a tiny amount of PS3s, why didn't they make it so you could only get them from Sony.com by mail order.

Firstly, they would make more money, because they would sell them for $599, not whatever they sell them to shops for (~$550?), and secondly they would have saved all that launch crap.

$50 more profit ($50 less loss ) per console is $50,000,000 in total...

Hmmm maybe it would have been unrealistic.

There are a few stores here in Cali with PS3 and PS3 bundles, but not a single Wii to be found. Quite odd, I thought the PS3 would sell better than that, regardless of their multiple mistakes.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all had very good christmas sales.

I think unfortunately for Sony, the problem is that their Playstation 3 console just hasn't lived up to reputation. The games available just aren't the crowd pullers it needs. Price against the competition is a serious blow, along with a very poor advertising campaign. All in all, it has been a monumental flop as far as release goes. They still have a few months until the European release (Sony lingo = Not Japan or USA), so we'll see how well it really fairs then especially with a couple more titles one or two that are quite anticipated.

As for the PSP though, it has done fairly well for itself. Sold out in a couple of regions here in the UK.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been able to also sell out quite well over November and December, which is impressive given it's still at full price. Microsoft are set to drop their hardware prices soon with the announcement of some new accessory releases, games have already seen a small price drop (£50 > £40) in the leading months to christmas which was quite a smart plan on Microsoft's part. Their advertising campaign has been quite fresh and memorable as well (my favourite was of all the game titles being used to create the 360 unit).

Nintendo on the hand to everyone has just been in their own league. They've not had "good" sales, they've had phenominal sales. Both of their consoles have become sold out almost everywhere; overnight. With constant restocking of suppliers trying to meet demand.

If anyone had a good Christmas had a very merry holiday, it'll be Nintendo. Their advertising campaign really did help with that no end. An area that Nintendo usually fall far behind with, and their adverts were very provocative. You saw what the console did, how to use it but only a glimpse that left you wanting more.

I'd say that Nintendo have done something this christmas that both Microsoft and Sony didn't expect. That was become serious competition... I hope to hell there are some Sony execs. who are very worried right now!

Lol the Wii has sold over 3.9 Million units in one month...thats damn good if you ask me...and with 70% of people buying Zelda along with it their doing pretty good if you ask me.

Lets hope that the price stays where it is, they stay on the shelves and sony lose their foothold on the gaming industry, some things require quality, not the giant, overpriced paperwieght sony sent out.

Playstation 3, how uncreative... It just goes to show that Microsoft and Nintendo can atleast think up some decent names for their brilliant machines.

I would rather buy a Wii, an Xbox 360 and a game for each than that overpriced peice of junk.

Fanboy alert.

I don't know even one gamer who considers the PS3 a "piece of junk". If anything it's probably a technical showcase, much like the 360. The game support thus far, and the price, reminds me of the 3DO. But that's to be expected

I don't think the PS3 is a piece of junk.
I do think that it is overpriced.
I also think that Sony has had an arrogant attitude towards the Playstation customers for a while just from the way they handled the launch to the fact that they have the "you will buy this no matter what" attitude.
Maybe they should take a page out of Nintendo's book.
Not only did they develop the wii with the largest consumer market in mind but Nintendo also tried to market the fun you can have with it,included a game (wii sports) and the Nintendo virtual console and made it affordable.
At least on Microsoft's end they have XBox Live.
It is possible that Sony fanboys may be wonering what to do with ther BetaMax...I mean,blu-ray players soon.
I am not a Sony hater.I have a PS2 and a boatload of games and accessories for it...
But come on...$600 just for the PS3 (no game and no love)?
Some of us are on this thing called a budget.

A similiar thing happened to me too.

I let out a massive burst of laughter when they had that bumbling Genji guy explaining how you had to flip the crab, and then it just cut to Phil Harrison sincerely clapping in a blowing-my-mind kind of way.

Obviously that was a very harse cut by whoever made the video - but it was hilariously done.

Has anyone here gone over the technical specifications for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 yet?
I mean properly taken the designs apart, and thought about what could be realistically what could be achieved?

The Playstation 3 on the whole confuses me.
To me the design of both consoles is like development teams...

The Xbox 360 is like a small independant development team. Sure you have no one who can really stand out in terms of potencial, however the way that everyone pulls together and works as a team you can often end up with a damn good result.

Where-as the Playstation 3 is like an EA development team. There are far more people employeed than really necessary, some of which you have no idea why they're even there as they don't seem to do much all day. There are a few big players with enormous talent behind them, but unfortunately each dept is kept fairly seperate meaning that each dept does their thing then has to wait for the others to do theirs before continuing. The final products are often very reasonable, but not something that will ever truely stand out; and because of time restrictions the whole team ends up getting a lower product that what could've been done with one that is very closely knit and smaller.

I mean that's just how I see it from my perspective anyway.
No doubt people can take this analogy much futher than I honestly care to, but seriously take a look at the differences between the systems. I'd say that Sony have taken a very bizzare move, why complicate a game/entertainment system with desktop aspects?

Don't under-estimate the PS3, or Sony for that matter. I agree that the console is both over-priced AND under-supported as far as games go right now, but it's only a matter of time before both of those factors change - and when they do it will be a whole different ball game out there.

I own a Wii and a PS2. I'm seriously considering buying a 360 too, but it has taken until now for me to do so because the games just didn't interest me - only now do the likes of GoW, Crackdown and Halo 3 capture my interest. The PS3 is no different, until there are some games that really rock no-one will care much. Of course the other big difference is that the 360 is so cheap now you can get them free with mobile phone contracts!

I got a ps3 for Christmas by luck. My mom got the last one on the shelf! The lineup of games is not that great but resistence fall of man is a very good game! The physics are great. I can shout pool balls on a pool table in one part of the game as well as close refrigerator doors break tables and glass bottles realistic glass shattering and particle effects. Not only this but playing with 40 people online with huge maps and my bluetooth headset is awesome and the weapons are really good. I believe the ps3 has alot of potenial I just hope it gets used. overall I believe blu ray is good for games as I want good games to last me longer and to have larger more interactive worlds which will in my piion will be next gen. Can see lots og games benefiting from this.(ex:GTA) As for movies I can take it or leave it. Overall I like it and can't wait to see what kind of games comeout for it in the future.

Yes, the zune software automatically finds all the music/album art/etc... as well as playlists from other programs including iTunes and brings all of that information into zune. It also finds pictures and videos. Then you just plug in the zune, click sync and wait for your thousands of media files to get transfered (this takes a while for me seeing as I have over 1500 songs and every episode of Red vs. Blue and several robot chicken episodes).

note : as of now the zune software doesn't support some codecs that other programs do. This doesn't effect a lot of stuff, but a couple songs didn't work.

But yeah I have a Wii60 . I'm happy with that. The PS3 is just too expensive and doesn't have any games I want. Maybe when the next generation begins they'll be cheap enough to get, or maybe they'll come out with a string of completely awesome games. But until either of those factors come to fruition there is just no way I'm getting one. Also those E3 videos make me laugh... and laugh... and laugh...

Fanboy alert.

I don't know even one gamer who considers the PS3 a "piece of junk". If anything it's probably a technical showcase, much like the 360. The game support thus far, and the price, reminds me of the 3DO. But that's to be expected"


I am entitled to my opinion in the same way that everyone else is.
You may call me a "Fanboy" but at least I'm backing the people that don’t immediately steal other company’s ideas the moment they are announced.(Note: from the "Xbox360 hardware" forum of GameFAQs, go there for the evidence of my previous statement, the topic is almost a year old but if your really that bothered I suggest that you start looking)

Sony simply takes all the ideas from other companies and sticks them together into an overall piece of [insert "mod edit" message here because I can't actually say any word more offensive than "heck" without risking violation of the forum rules] that breaks after a couple of years

You do now Jeku, infact you know five since everyone in my family hates them for their own reasons and once the PS3 game lineup continues to be, well less than under-average and the price stays where it is and the sony fanboy purchase them and go broke because they WASTED £525 on some thing of little or no use...(imo, infact to avoid being insulted via the internet imo to everything I say in this topic)

but this rant is futile since I have contradicted myself by saying that everyone is entitled to their opinion...DAMN!

Technical show piece = crud console.

I mean, when is the last time you tried a techdemo for a game that was fun? Saying a console is a technical show piece is the equivalent of saying it's a techdemo - it's all tech but no game.

I'm not a fanboy for any console out there, and I actually hate consoles most of the time. But I'm a supporter of fun, original concepts - and in that respect, the Wii has my complete and utter support. Roughly ~10 years ago (or more) no one gave a damn about graphics - you could boast about your poly count all day, but it would never make the game better.

Now people are enticed by powerful processors and glitzy graphics, with no real thought for substance. This is most definitely a change for the worse. I want fun, not a cell processor.

well, since PS3 lost 1 of its big sellers(AKA GTA4) I dont think it will sell as much as the 360 since they have GTA4 and its cheaper.

WTF....what was that for???

There's no logic at all that states a cell processor cannot power a game that provides fun and entertainment.

I agree that it's "all about the graphics" these days. But the PS3 isn't the only culprit here - I mean god damn, look at the direction companies like NVIDIA and Microsoft are heading - exactly the same place. PC and 360 gaming is absolutely no different at all I'm afraid.

Evil Star - All 5 people in your family hates the PS3 because of the launch line-up? I've got to ask then - why the hell did they buy one? Were you expecting some miracle selection of alternative games the day after release or something? Were the hundreds of videos of game footage not enough to give you an informed buying decision as to exactly what would be on offer from the start?

£500+ wasted? for now, sure. Your own fault? Absolutely.

Anybody should know what launch titles a system comes with before they buy it.

I wasn't implying that a cell processor was unable to give a decent entertainment experience - but the only 'cool thing' which is being pushed loads by Sony with the PS3 are the graphics and the cell processor. Although they could be used to create a fun game, they cannot create fun in their own right, nor are they particularly interesting to a consumers point of view. Heaven for developers I suppose, but still....

And yes, this trend is beyond the PS3, and I'm not specifically frying the PS3. The 'grpahics before game' approach makes me sick

Please read posts in detail, for you missed the two vital facts that are:

1. I have never in this topic posted that I owned a PS3

2. Your post leads me to believe that you think that ALL
of my family's reasons are one, that one reason being

If you have been bothered to read my evidence based drivel for God only knows how long, then I can assure you that I'm laughing my head off at the numerous people that are wasting there lives discussing the seemingly slow sales of the Sony PS3. Admittedly I am one of those people but oh well, most people reading this are to!

P.S Sony released images of the PS4 controller, if you look in the URL it says PS3 but I can assure you that in the middle of the controller it say PS4, even though the writing is barely legible

Ok. So then you, and your family (as you stated above (but seemed to have some brain fart and forget about)) hates the PS3 but, wait for it, you don't even own one, so have never actually gamed on one for any serious amount of time.
