Here's my desktop. Thanks again to Jeff for the awesome Vista skin. It's beautiful. Basically what I've been looking for for a long time, lol.

@Gahoo - Time to take a one year break. There is no such thing as free speech on the Internet. As long as you're on this forum you have to obey the rules of the admins and moderators.

@Flashing Snail - Funny how Gahoo photoshopped my avatar into the background image I deleted. Either he saved it before I deleted it, or that is your alt account. If I find out, I won't be happy

@Jeff & Agent Dink, Thanks I to installed NextLevel AT. One question though. After I changed it, I seem to have lost the ability to set transparency levels on the window handle and the taskbar. Is it one or the other???

And Agent Dink, How did you get your Firefox to look like that. [all black addr bar, and links bar], was it from the theme, or did you change that elsewhere?

Not a big deal--- somebody had a background that was going to start a political flame so I deleted it. Then someone else, a new user (conveniently... hmmm) posted a rant calling me a fascist and photoshopped my avatar into the offending background. I don't really have to post in a thread when I delete a message, but I do just to leave a little bit of a reminder to the forum

Well firstly, you need the Glasser plugin for Firefox. This allows other menu bars in Firefox to go transparent like the titlebar of windows. Secondly I am using the 'rein' skin. Makes for a very nice combination with the new Windows skin that Jeff linked us too.

I had the same problem you were having with the Windows skin at first Zennassem. Both NEXTLevel and the NEXTLevel AT folders need to be in Windows/Resources/Themes. If you extracted them straight from the ZIP file to the Themes directory they will both be inside a folder called NEXTLevel for Vista. The transparency does not work if it's like that. Both folders must be in the Themes directory rather than inside the 'NEXTLevel for Vista' folder.

If that doesn't solve it I'm not sure whats up. Good luck

I'm using RocketDock, it's the 'StackDocklet' I think you can get it for ObjectDock as well.

As for my desktop, I dunno where I got it. I usually just do a google image search for abstract desktops and search for extra large images only.

Well most of us appreciate the posts (when something was modded). I saw that image (the original post), and you were on it pretty quick. So I guess we know who the "new" user was.

And please organize your files Jeku. How can you stand to have pics on the desktop like that? It's killing me.

I have dev folders on my desktop for easy access. There's a few zillion other ones in the "work" folder as well, but I always put whatever I'm currently working on on my desktop. It's easier that way for me personally, rather than having to sort through however many folders it'd be otherwise.

Hey Jeku, what are your impressions of OSX in general so far? (I've got a 24" / 3.06GHz / 4GB iMac on order, due to arrive on the 29th - so hopefully it's good )

So far it's exceeded my expectations. I too use a 24" screen and most of the software I need is there. I'm using the top Mac Mini available now--- it's pretty fast for how big the unit is. It's a bit of a pain switching all the wires and restarting when I want to go back to my PC, but I saved a lot of money (total cost was around $700 IIRC).

I'm just using it primarily for iPhone development as the iPhone SDK only works with OSX and I didn't want to mess around and install it on my PC. Why are you getting one? To mess around with too?

There are a few weird things that I'm not used to. With my keyboard all the standard Ctrl functions work (i.e. CTRL-C, CTRL-V, CTRL-S, etc.) but you have to substitute the CTRL key with your Windows key. It will feel odd at first but you'll get used to it soon.

Also I haven't found a good way to maximize a window. If you can do this, let me know.

When you ALT-TAB it only shows 1 of every program, so if I have 3 Firefox windows open I can't ALT-TAB between them all.

Also it's interesting how most programs you download come as a DMG file which you mount as a drive. When you've installed a program most of the time it's just 1 icon in your Applications folder, so you don't have to mess around with things like registries, program files, etc.

The "it just works" is BS. I've plugged in 2 different webcams (a cheapie and an expensive one), neither of which just worked. They didn't even have native or 3rd party drivers, but you can hardly blame Apple for that I guess.

Also it's weird when you close a program's main window it will probably stay open so you have to CTRL-Q to shut it down for good. I'm having a hard time getting used to the way the Menu Bar is at the top of the desktop instead of the window itself. Bizarre.

One more thing, does anyone know how to get the END and HOME keys working like they do in Windows editors? I'm using XCode for iPhone stuff and I expect HOME, END, CTRL-HOME, and CTRL-END to work like they do in Windows.

I'm loving the various function-key abilities--- F11 is great

Anyways, that's probably a much larger response than you wanted

So as with anything I suppose, it's decent but with a few oddities. And yeah, I am sort of messing about too - but I'm planning to use it as my main coding machine along with a virtual machine of XP to host compiler/debugging/testing etc. since nothing I make is especially visually strenuous, and I don't play many games - so I thought a mac might 'fit the bill' so to speak (I've also been wanting to try OSX for ages).

I had the same arrangement inside Linux a while ago with virtual box - but this machine has a far weaker processor, and by the looks of it, VMware fusion etc. are far more polished in terms of specific features for the Mac, so it should be much more 'enjoyable' to run a VM. I suspected the "just works" thing was BS also - although I'm wondering whether the lack of webcam drivers is a deliberate ploy to force iSight upon everyone

Quote: "Also it's weird when you close a program's main window it will probably stay open so you have to CTRL-Q to shut it down for good."

That's also something that's really inconsistently explained by Apple / Apple's site, which makes me wonder whether it'll gradually become an annoyance working with a lot of programs / windows

What OSX does when you click the green "maximation" button on the top of windows is scale it by how big the webpage is, so you don't have to waste any space. I prefer this, as you save a lot of space, you'll get used to it eventually.

Quote: "Also it's weird when you close a program's main window it will probably stay open so you have to CTRL-Q to shut it down for good"

That's actually in my opinion pretty useful for most apps, as for example when you have multiple windows open in a web browser you can close them all and then just open a new one without having to start the application again, which makes it a lot quicker.
Then again, each to his own.

When it comes to OSX, don´t forget to try this:
Ctrl + Command (or the Windows key) + Alt + 8.

I think that was it, believe me, you will know if it is !

Just do the hide icons thing, it makes it so much prettier. My desktop is fludded with folders, so if I made them visable, I wouldnt be able to see anything.
if you rightclick on your desktop, then go to view/arrange Icons by, and then show desktop icons... I cant really remember the exact stuff for XP, ive moved onto Vista.... and all its might.
