I was like that too, but then i got bored installed ubuntu.. Saw that i had many room for eye candy and even for video desktop and played around

The video desktop does not distract me.. Its because of the low transparency. You could also have video desktop that is just relaxing (Imagine forest with swinging leaves and grass and so on..)
But yeah i also made hotkey to disable video and all window effects when im playing or need more speed =)
