Oh man... why didn't I ever think of something like your texture generator. It's so BRILLIANT! There are no visible repeats, so no eyehurting problems when you have long corridors. Brilliant idea, Baggers

Yeah, great work Baggers - the looping textures were one of the things I thought looked bad in the previous screenshots.

Oh yeah the grass really does need doing !
Its just a test level made my me (hence the quality!) but pudbwals level which is slowly getting completed will be awesome !
Only thing is the design is so different from mine that i have to re-make the collision system for the main character as it cant deal with the level !

Why don't you attach a link to your site anywhere on your sig or tabs? Kinda annoying to have to hunt in the long thread for that link just to visit your site and see if there's any updates.

note* Re-downloading Jazz2 for old memories.

EDIT: I gota say that level editor is looking mighty usful already. I'm amazed at the amount of work you've pushed out on your own and your dedication to the project. Don't quit anytime soon or I won't like you.

EDIT#2: Can that level editor load lightmapped .x or .dbo landscapes?
(Preferebly .dbo)

It's M-E-G-A-T-O-N. NOT MEGATRON.

Megaton: Dont worry im not going to quit !

Quote: "Can that level editor load lightmapped .x or .dbo landscapes?"

"lightmapped .x":If it cant already i'll make it so it does !
".dbo landscapes": Not yet but i'll read up on it and get it put in...isnt it just another file type for normal objects...if so it should be easy enough.

Quote: "I'm amazed at the amount of work you've pushed out on your own and your dedication to the project"

Thanks !
The editor is coming along well, its just hard going through each bit and adding features and then debugging them and then ..MORE FEATURES !...but hey itll make level creation so damn easy in the end itll be laughable. Literally i can control culling of massive bits of the level through triggers that i can set up with a few clicks of a button... or set up waypoints for moving object in seconds ...its pretty handy.
The static objects side of things is done now, they can be added saved loaded etc...so scenery is a doddle...might have it so they actualy become part of the level mesh ....but not yet !

As for the site link...i'll go add it to my sig pic now.
Thanks man, enjoy jazz2 its awsome !

Sorry bout the bump...i think im at the top at the sec anyway so it wont matter !...just to check the sig link is working.

<EDIT> Good ! yeah it works

Have a pic...ooo he's a protective bunny !

<EDIT>
Full manipulation working on static objects...currently working on triggers.
Triggers are very powerful tools to allow control over your levels, the player never see's them but does see their effects.
Triggers dictate where the level starts and ends, where secret teleporters are, they can be used tohide and show areas of the level (great way to get back fps)...basically a wide range of useful functions...but programming the interface is a pain as each tigger can have up to 4 seperate actions...so 1 trigger may, show another part of the level, teleport you there and hide the part of the level you were at !... its tricky but im getting there.

EDIT
====
I have updated the site with more pics of the editor, click the sig pic to go there.

Also a alpha demo of the editor is up...will be updating it again soon however.
====

DBAlex: Good to see ye here !
Quote: "The level editor looks sweet too!"

Tell ya what, have a little play...its still pretty limited but things are speeding up now as the ground work for the whole thing is done just adding features...heres what works:

Camera Control: Hold down shift to look around and use first and second mouse buttons to move (hold down control aswell to go faster)

Menu System: My totaly home coded system that uses text and images (not sprites !) to handle all the windows...phew i have learnt a bit making that

New Level: Will clear all of the objects except the terrain (i havnt had it clear that yet as i dont have a way of loading the new one in yet !)

Save and Load: Do work but are hidden...and not finished...the buttons wont work but there are keyboard shortcuts...but dont touch !

viewing all object types: Goto the place entity menu and check it out, im gradualy working through adding all the fiddly features...im currently working on Triggers so that wont make much sence at the moment...to be honest that will be the hardest part of the editor to use but the power is the reward
Static objects is done though, have a play !

Edit Entity...you can move, scale, rotate and delete entities (wait maybe not triggers, you cant delete them yet..i'll go do that in a min)

Yeah well thats a brief overview...its gonna make life so easy when this is done !

Ok heres the Demo...its in .rar format as this halfed the size of the file !
http://www.eckhart.da.ru/baggers/Files/Demos/JazzLevelEditorWIP.rar

Hope it's not too buggy or hard to use.
Id love some feedback on it.
Thanks people !

YAY ! Particle saving and loading are now working !
Have a piccy to celebrate. (i havnt updated the download yet though.)

<EDIT>
Thats right folks, more progress... check out the view!

Sorry people had to post again as so much has changed since the last post:
* Triggers are now deletable
* You can test the save and load functions with the "s" and "l" keys respectivly.
* Munchies (items you can eat for extra points) are placable and can be moved rotated etc...
* The sky box is currently unchangable but that feature will be added soon
* The strange landcape is the untextured level being made by Pudbawl...and its gonna be great !

I will be updating the Alpha demo soon

Heres another nice pic of that sky, and the munchies being placed.

<EDIT>
======
Download updated, im working on placing enemies now...and then on moving platforms.

Ok so some great progress today, ive been working flat-out so to speak.

* Enemy placing, manipulating, saving and loading

* Waypoints, 30 paths can be set each with up to 8 waypoints, these paths can be applied to Enemies now...oh and obviously the data is save and loadable !

Hmm doesnt seem so much written down...but i know how much coding went into it !
Any way heres the latest piccy.

Cool! I know what you mean about amount of code for waypoints. I'm just starting a 3D platformer (again). I'm planning for a rayman style and it is going to have waypoints for enemies, lazers, bombs etc. I'm starting on the level editor soon so I'll be going through the same as you!

hehe the bit i had trouble getting to work at first was ... say i made 5 waypoints.

_1___2_3_______4__5
and I deleted number 3, the numbers have to changeor it makes no sence, that was a little tricky...but in the end like most things it gets solved with a clever for i loop !

Wow Baggers! These screens are amazing! Looks like the level editor has payed off The editors looks extremly powerful, shame mines a piece of sh*t then

Have you begun working on the actual game engine yet (ie: gameplay), or are you doing all the editors first and then gameplay?

Anyways, looking better every time I check. You know somebodys doing something right when you can't think of any constructive criticism, because it all looks great as it is! Is that Geecee3's skybox? Fits well

I'll have to get working on Dumbo and Cool again if I want it to be up to this standard Keep up the good work.

Thanks Drew !
Quote: "Have you begun working on the actual game engine yet"

Oh yes thats how i started this project !...i only recently started the editor.
Animated objects, moving scenery, charcter control, particle effects, enemy AI (for 3 of the enemies), shooting (for 5 of the 9 weapons), Waypoint system...pretty much all that is in the editor is working in at least a limited fashion....the real problem for me is media, its just so hard to get stuff made..wish i was skilled in the modeling area as well !
The reason i started the editor a little while back was that i knew it needed doing and i was getting annoyed of having to code in where everything went each time...and im lazy at heart !
Heres a video of current gameplay (it was taken a while back but there hasnt been many changes since then)
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Beta/Beta_Video_2_NS.avi

Quote: "Is that Geecee3's skybox?"

No not used his yet, the ones im using at the moment come from Clueless, but I know im going to need the crazy skys at some point !
Im really looking foreward to using VanBs skyshere creator actualy, as then i can use the sky boxes and a landscape to create a skysphere that matches the style of the game slightly neater than the current skybox.

Quote: "I'll have to get working on Dumbo and Cool again if I want it to be up to this standard"

Thanks but i think your being very hard on yourself! dumbo and cool is a great game, first db one im actualy planning to buy!...oh and that new voice actor of yours did a damn good job !

Peace man !

Damn it, video doesn't work for me

I'll guess I'll wait until the demo release. I'm excited to see what the game plays like, as the levels etc.. are all up to scratch.

I think the skysphere at the moment is good but VanB's one would be good for game / backdrop consistancy if that's what you mean.

Until later

Drew: Yeah thats what i mean !

All:
Just showing the window where you can set make the 'arm' for a rotating platform.
The editable variables are:
Balls: The number of balls in the arm
Gap: The distance between each ball
Warp: How bent the arm is
Hope you like it !

When you finish the game, you should contact the guys who made the original and see what they think of it.

It'll be interested when the landscape is textured - you should do a series of "before (2D) and after (3D) pictures...

One more question, is your avatar of Jazz or is it from the game Gish? Or is it from none of the above?

Well its not the standard piccy but definately is something new...yep Jazz now has online updates !

You can get the Updator here (File size 600kb):
<-removed->

It only gets a few test files at the moment...but i could easily distribute the entire game like this.
Basically ive just made my own 'Steam' but no stupid updates just to get it to waste your time .

I also squashed about 20 editor bugs and the Editor now handle animated scenery just fine !...but it caused serious headaches to get it working.
Anyway enough of my yakking, if you have the time please try the updator and tell me if anything goes wrong.
If anyone wants the code for the updator just ask and ill post it.
Actually i'll put it up tommorow evening

Thanks Drew, im going to add in a feature so it can handle .rar files and unzip them, i think there was a dll for that. This will help with distributing game files and such.
Also a few code optimizations to make sure bugs dont occur.
Right-o im off to look for that dll now !

Hehe thanks !...cant find a free dll for compression, but playng with WinRar's settings you can create self extracting archives that you dont have to accept so i'll get the updator to execute them and viola!...instant compressed media transfer , ideal for sending out lots of media updates !
Im looking forward to getting this going, this would be great alow anyone to make media they would like to see ingame and share it with everyone else....hmm i'll have to ask the guy who made my site to include a media submitting form. Ah potential !
Oh yeah and once ive got this system up to a state i think is suitable I will put it all up on 'Program Announcments' with instructions on how to use it on your own project.

<EDIT> Ive taken down the download link to my updator as im currently making a new version with more features.

Ok we have lift off !
This is the current version of my JazzUpdator, this is what will not only be used to update the files once the game comes out but can distribute the entire game itself, which is probably the way i'll do it.

The system makes use of high compression self extracting archives to transport the media so it is no larger than standard downloads, however it gives me the flexibility to change the code whenever I like and still ensure you get the latest versions.
Also if I ever choose to Update the 'updator' i can send a message down the update link to you telling you a new version is out.

Ok so what do you do?

1) Download this file (600kb)
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Updator/JazzUpdater.zip

2) Unzip the file to a convinient directory

3) Run the file named JazzUpdate.exe

4) The program does the rest ! just check the directory to see whats new.

Well I hope this works for you all, please tell me if you experience any problems or would like to see any new features.
Also once I have established that this system is fully working, I will release the documented version for you to implement into your own games.
Thanks people, happy updates !

Wow, looks great. I, um, didn't have the time to read through 240+ posts , but in case Baggers never found an answer to his problem, you could just have the knights patrolling the area, and they would chase Jazz if he got too close. Jazz'd have to out-run them, or he'd get hurt.

Hehe thanks 'Thinkdigital' it has been a while since that post !

Oh also people the first playable engine test is up.
Not very impressive im afraid, I really need to rewrite the collision code, and as of yet the only enemies in the level (the dragonflys) dont make any noise...but some features are available.

Controls:
Up: Foreward
Down: Backwards
Left: Turn left
Right: Turn right
Space: Jump
Ctrl: Fire weapon
Shift: Run
1-9: Select Weapon (currently only 1,2,5,6 & 8 work)
t: Turn on targeting system
y: turn off targeting system

Character Specials:
Spaz:
click jump, and then click it agin at the top of the jump to perform a double jump
Jazz:
Click Jump, at the peak of the jump press jump again to fly a short way.
Hold 'Alt' and click jump to perform a super jump

To get the demo just run the updator.

Ok well I downloaded the updater(notice you spell it wrong ) and it downloaded some files, then DAP opened and asked me where I wanted some files to go. I downloaded EarlyDemo.exe but I can't find the actual game exe

Edit: Nevermind, I worked it out.

Whats DAP...ive not had this problem myself....the archives are meant to be selfextracting and not ask any questions. strange why yours did. Try running the exe and it should uncompress into the early demo folder.

Wow, a lot has been happening since I last checked here. I like the updater idea. I have yet to try the demo but I will give you my feedback soon.
P.S Good luck with your exams

Ok well I finally downloaded it all and played it, but found one annoying problem. I can't hold alt+space+upkey otherwise Jazz bounces up and down .
