Oops, what was I thinking--- not Blue-Ray.

The cheapo PS3 will be without WiFi, HDMI and memory card support. And no, you can *never* upgrade the HDMI aspect--- so you can't run a truly digital connection to your HDTV. Pity, really.

And that, dear Jake, is the very first thing that anyone has told me about the PS3, in this forum or otherwise, that has made me upset about hte PS3. In fact, that's more bothersome than the batarang controllers (if they didn't scrap them, I was actually going to buy a third party controller, and as many of you know, I refuse to use them because I'm anal-retentive ). I don't care about WiFi as much... I can live without it, but no 1080i? Screw it, I'll buy the expensive one

But yes, I'm still a hardcore sony elitist fanboy lol.

I don´t think that´s the main problem. From what I´ve read blu ray discs will have the possibility of dropping the resolution to sub hd standards if a HDMI connector isn´t connected. Actually what are all these resolution things anyway? 720i 720abc,1080z,100000000etc.....p

Need path finding in your games? Have a look at the tutorials on www.telefonica.net/web2/paskyprog/.

Yea, without HDMI the resolution will be dropped to ED... Barely above 480p from what I've read.

Well, Xbox 360 will have Forza Motorsports 2, which is maybe even better than Gran Turismo(in my opinion, of course). So I don't know if Gran Turismo will give Xbox 360 the hardest competition.

And that thing about GTA outselling Halo... Of course, Halo was only for Xbox and pc, while GTA was for both Xbox, pc AND PS2.

And maybe off topic:

Quote: "I can live without it, but no 1080i?"

I just bought a new 32" HDTV, and I was wondering which resolution is the best for games. My TV can run 720p or 1080i, but I've read that that this 'interlaced'-thing is supposed to be more blurry. My own experience is, that 1080i is maybe a little blurred, but this doesn't really annoy me, unless I'm playing some fast paced game. 720p is not blurred, but is of course not as high resolution.

What on earth is wrong with 480p?
HD outlines the flaws and nothing else. It's like taking a magnifying glass to a supermodel.

Quote: "And that thing about GTA outselling Halo... Of course, Halo was only for Xbox and pc, while GTA was for both Xbox, pc AND PS2"

Those numbers are for the PS2 version alone (keep in mind that all of the GTA games have been released on PS2 first, almost a full year before their xbox/ pc releases, and xbox only got SA because Take 2 went over Rockstar's heads). Combined on all platforms the GTA series is the most successful series in history... which frightens me, because (and please don't take this out of context people) the GTA series isn't exactly known for its incredible story depth and character development. But that's me... always expecting more out of games than they ever care to present, lol. To most people, GTA is a fun way to blow crap up. For me, it's the puzzle of finding all of the hidden stuff and trying to get 100% while killing as few people as would be necessary. One of my proudest achievements in history was nailing 100% on Vice City without killing a single pedestrian/ civilian and without using a single cheat code (because in my opinion using a cheat code is like fastforwarding through a movie just to see the end).

I think the lack of HDMI in the cheaper playstation might be of benefit to some people who can't afford a hi-def TV... after thinking about it, I actually commend them on that.

edit: I can see it already... someone's going to attack me for saying the GTA series has crappy story development

Lack of a HDMI port for the cheaper ps3 is really no big deal unless your a video freak, here is why.

360 doesn't have HDMI either but my dvd player/burner does.
I hook my 360 to my 42" 3-lcd sony wega through HD-composite video cables. I hook my dvd player/burner to my tv through HDMI. Running 1080i top resolution of the 360 although not true HD since is actually

1360x768
Mega pixels 1.04
Width / Height 1.77
Aspect Ratio 16:9

Looks great however it is equally impressive running it at 720p the difference is not noticeable to the naked eye.

Same with my HDMI ported dvd player/burner it up scales the signal 720p to 1080i through the monster HDMI cable after leaving the burner, however the difference from viewing a composite ran 720p dvd from the 360 drive vs a 1080i up scaled from the burner is minimum, the HDMI connection does give a slight noticeable increase to the image however does it justify the $150 buck monster HDMI cable? For me yes since im a movie buff but to most people i would say the difference wouldn't be worth $150 bucks for a single cable connection. The sony system even without HDMI ports can still out port 1080p through the composite HD video cables the image will be dumbed down just a bit compared to if it was on a HDMI connection but probably not enough to really make a difference to the majority of peoples eyes so the lack of HDMI wouldn't be a major concern.

The problem with the cheaper PS3 is you don't have the option of upgrading in a few years when you decide to shell out on a HDTV.

Quote: "keep in mind that all of the GTA games have been released on PS2 first"

Wrong---- GTA 1 & 2 were released on PC first.

That is true but you can still connect a ps3 to a HD tv using the HD component video cables, and the jump from component to HDMI is not very much at all. Its not a requirement for the connection to be HDMI only to get 1080p, either HD component connection or HDMI connection will still look amazingly crisp just the HDMI will have a small advantage, the real problem is so far sony isn't even taking advantage of 1080p in any of there developing games.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/707/707540p1.html

edit: With the price gap between HD component and HDMI being about $100 for the cable i think HDTVs will be keeping both ports available for awhile since the picture quality difference doesn't really justify the cost yet.

Link to a site selling a 1080p component video cable if anyone is interested.

Didn't Kojima announce MGS4 as being the PS3's first 1080 game? Maybe I misread or misheard that though.

Quote: "Wrong---- GTA 1 & 2 were released on PC first."

I meant 3/ vc/ sa... good point though. Were those first titles released on any consoles other than the PS1?

Quote: "Wrong again. Did you forget about the Sims?"

Quote: "I believe Diablo II and Super Mario Bros both outsold GTA. Might be wrong ofcourse."

The Sims sold 22 million units, The Sims 2 sold 18 millions units, that's 40 million units total. But I don't know if those figures include all of the expansion packs or the console version, which could make it a close contest.
Diablo 1 and 2 combined sold 9 million units, so it isn't even close, no offense
GTA 1, GTA 2, and GTA London combined sold 2 million and change, GTA 3 sold 8 million, GTA VC sold 20 million, GTA SA sold 22 million, and Liberty City Stories (only available on PSP and the PS2) has sold a measily 2 million units, equalling 52 million units (on every platform available combined). Again, this is from Game Developer and who knows who they got it from or if it's right.
Super Mario Brothers though, that's a HUGE franchise and you're probably right on that one (I hate admitting when I'm wrong), but if you don't count the NES or SNES titles I'll bet GTA outsells them

That's not a very fair comparison; you compared 2 The Sims titles against 7 GTA titles.

XBOX 360, no question for me.

It isn't the PS3's price that I despise. It's Sony's insane approach to the "packages". Who sells a console with a version that can't be upgraded!?

You just don't do that. You just--don't. I mean, the lower version doesn't even have Wi-Fi, and you can't buy an upgrade for it.

I don't even like the 360 hugely, but I'm getting one for RE5, and maybe Banjo X ()--of course, there are other games too. The PS3 looks good, but seriously--Sony needs to get some sleep, because it's talking crap.

EDIT: Geez, I hate multi-page threads. I really have to start noticing when there is more than one page!

Hey, don't blame me! Will Wright needs to get more active and Sam/ Dan Houser & Leslie Benzies need to slow the $#@% down I'm comparing the entire series against the other entire series. How many Mario games have their been? A lot more than 7, lol, but we're counting Mario in this as well, aren't we?

Quote: "Alright, that's why I specificially said "I might be wrong ofcourse" so that when you prove me wrong you wouldn't instantly hop onto your high horse. For Christ's sake... "

Jeesh Megaton, take your ritalin bud I didn't mean that to be offensive, I just meant it to be informative, hence me saying "no offense" so you wouldn't explode at me like that

Quote: "Huh? What is the point of that? So you're basiclly saying "Okay find me a series that outsells the GTA series, but I'll cut a few games from it so it still falls short of GTA" Yes, we're including every mario game. "

Please note the face at the end of that sentence... that was meant to be a joke. Jeesh Megaton, don't you start ganging up on me too

I'm willing to bet that Mario is really on the top of the list because of market inflation. You have to consider how many units were sold then, compared to how little the game industry was back then, and then compare that to the game industry today. Back then, the movie industry would have laughed hysterically if you tried to inform them that the game industry would grow to be several times the strength of said movie industry; no one back then thought it was possible. 36 Million Units of the NES were sold during it's eleven year production run, from 1985 to 1996 (that's counting the "new" NES). The SNES sold 49 million units (also including the second edition of the console). Compare those to the PS2, last generation's pound-for-pound top-selling console, which sold twice as many at 90 million units (which makes it the most popular console in history). With market inflation, the NES and SNES are around the same in sales at the PS2. Anyway, with market inflation the Mario Brothers series is easily #1, but without it it's pretty close, I'd wager.

Yah dude, I have GTA 2 on my trusty Dreamcast

On a side note, the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace is so lovely--- I love being able to download demos of a bunch of games. There's even a few free one's I've noticed. Rockstar released GTA 1 & 2 for free from their site a long time ago-- it would be so cool if they put it on Live so we could play them on the 360

Of course that's a dream, but you never know!

There are Freddy... I didn't think to include those in the earlier numbers, hence me being wrong How many were there actually? House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Makin' Magic, the pets one, the hollywood one... I know I'm missing a few. And for Sims 2 there was University and Open for Business (which I REALLY want to play one of these days) but I can't think of any other expansion packs. Then again I'm not a *hardcore* sims buff... I'm more of a casual fan who plays it now and again.

Speaking of Expansion Packs, and this is totally off-topic, but does anyone know the release date of the new Movies expansion pack?

The original Super Mario Brothers has a lot of different figures when you try to find actual figures for it, because a lot of NES systems were released with SMB packaged with it, and that doesn't rightly count toward sales. Distribution-wise I'm sure it's close to 30 million units, but sales-wise it's most assuredly lower, like 1 million or maybe even less (why would people buy it when most had already gotten it for free, know what I mean?) I know that of the Mario series, Mario 3 was the highest seller before the N64 came out. But that's seller and doesn't count free packaged distribution with the NES console.

Whatever--- you can't just make up rules as you go along A sale is a sale--- they were selling PS2s here with San Andreas--- did you count those? Give me a break.

SMB sold 40 million copies, and not every NES came with the game. After all, most NES' that came with SMB also came with Duck Hunt--- you don't see Duck Hunt in the top 10, do you? Your logic is flawed.

The Pokemon series sold 83.85 million copies on the Gameboy alone. Do you really want me to insert the other console copies into that already crushing number?

Full List:

Quote: "By franchise

* Mario (257.3 million) [81]
* Pokémon (143 million) [82]
* Final Fantasy (63 million) [83]
* Grand Theft Auto (50.1 million) [84]
* The Legend of Zelda (47 million) [85]"

As you can see, GTA series is not the most successful.

And to add insult to injury, when the new Zeldas come out for the Wii and DS, it will plummet GTA to 5th place untill another GTA is released.

And:

"It should also be noted that The Legend of Zelda series does not include Four Swords for Game Boy Advance, Four Swords Adventures for GameCube, and all CD-i games."

Ouch.

@ megaton: Why are the numbers in square brackets in the 80's? Does that mean there are 80 franchises that sold more? Because that would be impossible.

Either way, it looks like GTA has been truely crushed.

Your source is the Inquirer... that's like trusting Fox News to honestly report on a democratic convention or trusting your life in the hands of astrology This guy's "scoop" allegedly came from a passenger on an airplane who may or may not actually work for Sony. Their dev kit says "no, this isn't a typo?" Why am I having a hard time believing that? Oh! Probably because developers are lining up around the block to use it and because nothing bad about the dev kits have been reported by any of the people that have used it so far... except for it's price tag (which is right around the same price as the PS2's devkit when it was first released).

This guy who wrote the article is an obsessed xbox fanboy... nothing more. He doesn't name any of his sources or even attempt to write this article from a non-biased viewpoint, making it the worst source for information that you could have used. All of the Informer is pretty much like that... biased, one-sided editorials from one person or another who rarely, if ever, try to get their hands wrapped around facts. Come on Jeku, you can do better than that

I'm still at a loss as to why you all hate the Playstation series so much. You can't all be that bitter that it's won every round of the console wars since it's creation without contest.

Both the first Playstations are awsome - I'm just not seeing a good enough reason to get the third. I have only one friend who wants to get it, and that's because he's a hardcore MGS fan. Yeah, he's getting a $600 system just for one game...how lame is that for the PS?

Quote: "I'm still at a loss as to why you all hate the Playstation series so much"

Actually, I rather liked the ps1. It had spyro on it, and that game was awesome. It even was the first system to have Tony hawk, one of my all-time favorite games franchises. The ps2 though, when it first came out gave me the impression that Sony wanted to rape games until they were something so horrible that I'd never consider buying a consol again. Unfortunately I was right, and even though I saw some great consol games come out, I turned my back on them because what Sony had done to consol gaming was just so disgusting. I've never even bought Halo for the pc because it reminds me too much of the ps2, even though it came out for the Xbox. I turned inward to computer games, where gamers were still treated with respect and didn't always feel like they were being raped. The Wii not only introduces something new to gaming, but also brings back a quality to consoles which I thought may have been lost. Let’s face it, the GC which was the closest thing to that feeling wasn't exactly inspiring.

And considering most of us here are game devs, it’s no surprise the majority of us here like the Wii. The Virtual consol will possibly let all developers with a good product sell it on the wii, with or without a publisher (or so says ign.com). The Wii simply looks the best of the three next gen consoles. If you can't see that you're either willfully ignorant or too much of a fanboy to admit your company made a mistake. I don't see how you could think the ps3 will win the war, especially when people do a PRICE COMPARISON. This time, people will have to choose between a consol that costs the most and comes out last featuring the least games (ps1 and ps2 games don't count, as not everyone has them. With the Wii, you can buy the retro games specifically for the Wii, so they are launch titles). On the other hand, for the same price they could get a consol that looks graphically identical without careful observation, as well as a new innovative small consol that looks sexy and has tons of games for it right off the bat.

You're defense of Sony just doesn't work. Please feel free to critique this entire post. I'm very tired, and I enjoy reading your responses.

Edit: While I love the gta games themselves, I hate them for causing so many developers to bevieve every game had to be about real life and punk gangsters, and have massive open ended worlds which were cool but often times completely mis-used.

The only consoel-pc games I've ever bought are the ones that have nothing to do with reality and were not for the ps2, such as Fable. Sometimes I feel like Sony has personaly insulted me.

Yes.

I meant... I have no clue what I meant. I was very tired when I wrote it. But it looks like I knew what I meant when I wrote it, so maybe someone else here will figure it out.

Blue skies.

Games grew up, and dumbed down. (Good and bad things at the same time). Sony did a wonderful job of making games less geeky, and opening wide the 17-25 male demographic - people who want blood and gore and cool explosions - to be made god of the control pad. This is a Good Thing. However, in doing so, they neglected the other demographics - the people who played The Sims or WoW on PC, or 3d platformers on the Gamecube. (The PS1 had a very healthy range of platformers (thanks for Crash Bandicoot, Sony - it was ace) but the PS2 aimed 'hardcore').

XBox 360 has started by aiming for the same demographic as Sony did with the PS2 - the hardcore FPS loving crowd. Wii has left them to fight that one out themselves. (The 360 may diversify, that's up to Microsoft, their marketing guys and their wallets).

I think I understood the Tired-Bizar Guy. The 'rape' was the dumbing down of games to appeal to the basest instincts - move-fire-blood-gore-kill-kill-kill!!! There are certainly games that didn't (Ico, Katamari Damaci, DDRs, sports/car games etc), but the famous ones (and yes - the ones that people bought, Sony just cater to the market) were all about the mainstream bloodlust.

I'm as guilty as many here - and guiltier than almost all of you. But that's why the Wii represents a shining beacon of hope for me. One day, I want to make games for the Wii - games that aren't the gaming equivalent of a fight after the football match. I want that very much.

Maybe I understand the rape of games in the PS2. I see good games, and improving all of the time. Black is amazing, and is a deffinate progression in terms of Graphic Power. Ps1,Ps2, follow the same pattern, they give you the games that you want, with improved graphics, and power. Wipeout improved, Lara Croft improved. All games improved.

Nintendo actually have fewer assortments of characters. They stick with mario, and gang most of the time. They improve the same game over, and over, probably more than Sony, because they bring out 6 mario titles one after another for the same console quite quickly.

So they both rape games....but..

The Wii has a new controller. So the rape of games is played in a new way......but..

They will still be mostly Mario Games. I have a nintendo Gamecube, and I have Mario Karts 2. It is great!!! But most of my other games are not great.

Sony games are nearly all pretty good. I have lots of good Sony games. I want to play them all with improved graphics again. I want to play Wipeout Super Duper edition. Lara Croft's amazing super bra extravaganza. Destruction Derby's Amazing Rotting Rust Abuse.

So.....When you point your Wii at the screen, will you be pointing it at Mario, or would you rather be pointing it at Lara Croft???

Eyuk...Talk about raping games.....

Pincho - Funny

I would also like to work on a Wii game in the future--- hopefully near future. Would be even better to work on original IP, not just a port of another game with a tacked on "wii" mode that adds nothing.

Original IP would be very nice - but a liscenced game with the freedom to make it great would be better. Tony Hawkes style (liscenced game, but excellent one at that). But being stuck making a Wii game that's just a straight port would suck.

Matt, this is very old, but cut me a break, I've been on vacation and didn't want to pay their BS $10 fee for 2 minutes of satelite internet.

You are not holding up to your liberal standards in defending the PS3. Liberals are supportive of change, and conservatives support conserving the current state of things. The current state of things is that Sony makes everyone else bend over and submit to their will. Supporting Wii is supporting change, which is being liberal. You seem to have mistaken the term "liberal" with "that one guy who just likes to disagree with everyone else".

One last thing in general,
Wider demographics=more money
Casual games make more money than hardcore games. Wii=money.

lol I have a gamecube,ps1,ps2,xbox and the 360 already now im just waiting for the ps3 which I think is supposed to be out in November not really sure what the date was.

And just for the heck of it I have to say that I personally think Oblivion for the 360 has to be one of the best games i've ever played. right now im 75 hours into the game and just can't believe the amount of quests and detail that is put into this game and not to mention the graphics are something else.

I don't understand how someone could say that the PS2 rapes games, but the Xbox doesn't

Quote: " don't see how you could think the ps3 will win the war, especially when people do a PRICE COMPARISON. "

Probably because more people are looking forward to the PS3 than both of the other consoles combined? Or maybe because history always repeats itself? To say it won't win and to say it doesn't have a chance is far more ignorant than anything I've read on here.

Quote: "ps1 and ps2 games don't count, as not everyone has them"

Unless you count the 80 million PS1 owners or the 90 million PS2 owners who made those two consoles the highest selling consoles in history

Quote: "While I love the gta games themselves, I hate them for causing so many developers to bevieve every game had to be about real life and punk gangsters, and have massive open ended worlds which were cool but often times completely mis-used.
"

On THAT, and only THAT, I agree with you whole-heartedly

@ Tinkergirl: I sort of see your point, but I've read countless reports that say that the PS1 made gaming a mainstream thing in almost every demographic you could think of (except females... for some reason we needed the Sims to bring them in in greater numbers). And if we're going to discuss dumbed-down games, I could spend an hour or two talking about NES titles that were huge sellers and marketed toward non-gamers in the hopes of roping them in... games that did an exceptional job at it as well. I don't think it's the fault of Sony as much as it's the fault of the developers. I didn't see any more groundbreaking titles coming out of the N64 at that time.

Quote: "Lara Croft's amazing super bra extravaganza"

Finally! someone else acknowledges that her breasts keep growing larger and larger and larger! You need a second screen to play the third game I don't think that's sexy in any way... if she took off that sea-green shirt she'll probably have granny-style "over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders" on

Quote: "You seem to have mistaken the term "liberal" with "that one guy who just likes to disagree with everyone else". "

This isn't a liberal arguement for me, it's a matter of taste. Now, if someone had said that we should all buy a Wii because George Bush likes it... well... in that case, you should all put on some flame-retardant clothing But I'm not really trying to support liberalism in this thread as much as I'm trying to (A) support Sony as a company that I love, (B) support the PS3 as a franchise that I love (and I'm the only person defending them, which sucks), and (C) prove my point that the PS3 is going to dominate this round of the console wars as always. If everyone was a PS3 fan and they were all ganging up on the Wii, I wouldn't support the Wii just to argue. Trust me, after being in these forums I know that any arguement I get into is a losing one (well, 2 out of 3 times anyway) and I don't get into them if I don't have to When are you going to Rochester, anyway?

Lets not talk about it as if it's already a statistic...

But if you insist, there here are the numbers grabbed from large polls are random:

CNET News

Quote: "Xbox 360: 46%
Sony Playstation 3: 37%
Nintendo "Revolution": 17%"

Joystiq:

GameFaq:

Quote: "Which of the three next-gen consoles do you think you'll own by this time next year?
All three 6.62% 6257
PS3 and Wii 16.69% 15774
PS3 and 360 5.28% 4986
Wii and 360 13.18% 12455
Just a 360 5.31% 5022
Just a PS3 17.03% 16093
Just a Wii 27.57% 26052
None of them 8.32% 7865
TOTAL VOTES 94504"

3rdedition:

Quote: "What next gen console are you getting?
I'm gonna get a Wii
42%
42% [ 9 ]
I'm gonna get a PS3
4%
4% [ 1 ]
I'm gonna get/have an Xbox 360
14%
14% [ 3 ]
I'm buying more than one
4%
4% [ 1 ]
I'm not buying a new console
33%
33% [ 7 ]"

PS3 lost each one I found. And the Cnet poll is old, hence why they it's still the "Revolution". The Wii has not yet been unleashed on the public.

Give it up. You don't speak for every console consumer out there.

Haha, nice work So far Matt is sounding more like a fanboy than anything else--- almost everything he's said about the Sony "fanbase" has been incorrect.
