I finally finished Darkest Island over the weekend, and was able to give it to my friends and family as a late Christmas present. My little brother was very adamant about releasing this game online for people to play by the end of the year, so here it is. I have decided to make the game a free download. This was my practice run in making a large scale video game, and it is a little rough around the edges. But it is still really fun, and I hope everyone gives it a try.

The minimum system requirements are a 1.2 ghz processor with 512 MB RAM and a video card with 128 MB of video RAM. It also requires the latest DirectX drivers dated December 2006 which can be downloaded here. It will run better on higher specs of course.

Darkest Island is the story of a man named Daniel who wakes up in a bloody hospital bed on a remote island with no knowledge of how he got there. A girl's voice echoes in his mind, begging for him to come and rescue her, and promising to help him get off the island. Daniel finds that this hospital is actually a research facility, and the inhabitants are no longer human. These zombie-like creatures are not the only enemies that Daniel makes. Soon he has armed soldiers hunting him as well. The story of the facility unfolds as Daniel makes his way into the dark center of the island.

And here is the link to the download (236 MB):

Ok, the beginning is very impressive, but how do you get out of the first room?

Edit: Oops, I was using ENTER to use instead of 'F'.

Well I've just completed part 1 and it's without doubt the best FPSC game I've ever come across! It's amazing!

There is one small error; at the start of the second level, the door behind is transparent (see attached). Is this door at the edge of the map? I bet it is, it's a little bugette with FPSC, any doors placed at the edge of the map go a bit funny, try bringing it in one segment and that should do the trick.

I urge everyone to download this and play it, trust me, you'll want to!

This is how an FPSC game should be made! I just finished about 10 minutes ago and i am amazed. The charecter development throughout the game is great and the way the story progresses keeps it moving without ever getting boring. I love it. 10/10

First try restarting your computer. Then make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers and drivers for your video card.

I changed the M logo, so it does not match theirs anymore, and it is hard to see on that smaller pic, but it says Luke314pi instead of ESRB.

I used to have the same problem, until I downloaded the current Direct X patch (December's).

You need to fix the opening scene. It drags the game horribly. I was able to play it from the game folder.

The cinamatic elements are wonderful. The fact your one of the few members around to make a game that uses not one piece of TGC media makes this a breath of fresh air(media like cursors/splash/buttons/load/etc).

Where the game falls is the use of the hospital type texture. That white tile is played to death.

I like the use of the media and the story zone kick. The voice acting actually isn't to bad for being indie.

I like the story and it's flow

Theres a section where the hospital wall texture goes to the stock scifi corridor ones, and to me it dose not make the transition well. I'd lose um.

I only tell you these things to help.
Over all a good game, but could be great

Use 'F' to open doors.

Locrian, I appreciate your comments. My next game will use no TGC media at all. This is partly inspired by you.

Luke,
I have downloaded the game but I haven't played it yet.
But I will shortly...
The screenies look nice and I am sure that you have done a good job on this based on what I have seen from you in the past.
I will get back to you and let you how how it plays.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I know you put a lot of time and effort in the extras and it shows. I can also see where you were rushed but overall a good game. It's got a good story and you stayed true to to it. I like the idea of giving the player options as it make for repeat game play.

Thanks for letting us play. Happy New Year!

BTW: Angela is HOT!

Nice work on the game and is one of the better ones ive played, the logo at the start takes a long time before getting to the main menu so that could be better.

Level 2 seems to crash sometimes and the ai on some of the char freeze at times but altogther it kept me playing to the end.

This was a good game well done.

Played the full game now, and what a game it was! The video sequences were a bit choppy for me but that didn't spoil it one bit.

There should be a sticky with the best games so newcomers (and others) can see just what can be done with a little thought and effort.

I'd love to see a screen shot of your map, (obviously long after everyone's played it, don't want to be giving the game away) to see how you planned out your game.

The very, very ending took me by surprise

Like Aydan, I'm certainly looking forward to your next game, well done.

I have to say that this is a pretty good game and one I’ll play again. There were a couple of minor issues with speed and doors opening into the outside when they shouldn’t have. All in all it was well finished and had a nice style, which gave you the feel of Farcry or even with a bit of Half Life in the mix. I think if Luke314pi were to bring out another game I would play it, just because of the professionalism he showed in the game design and the story line. I hope to see more of his work in the near future.

Overall a very good game. My only complaints would be that the levels are to short and the bad A.I. which is not really your fault. And those darn FPSC footsteps get on your nerves. But was impressed with the storyline and all the extras you put into it. Nicely done and looking forward to more of your work. 6/10

9/10

only because now my head hurts from bumping it on the ceiling to many times.

great game man, one problem though, when I got to that fat guy on level 3, this is what happened (look at screenie).

I'm going to finish it later because it crashed the game and now I have to start over.

Luke314pi,

Greetings. Downloaded "Darkest Island", and I must say that you did an outstanding job!

The gameplay is good. The storyline is fresh and exciting. It is on par with most retail games that are on shelves. Very polished!

Weak points are the splash screens, and the main game menu screen...at least on my computer.

The splash screens seemed to take a long time to load and fade. I'd like to see these load and fade faster, or for you to introduce a slideshow effect, to breakup the lengthy load time.

The main game menu did not display any radio buttons. I had to randomly click around with the cursor, and search for the "buttons". I do have the latest DirectX update installed.

I rate this game a solid 9.98/10.00. I'd love to see you develop a third part...a sequel, if you will.

Work out the minor bugs, and I whole-heartedly believe that you have a title that could be offered as retail...

Thanks,

Seth Black

Thanks for your comments!

The menu worked fine on the three computers I tested this on. Did anyone else have a problem with the buttons not showing up?

I didn't have any problems with buttons, but I do have a problem when going to level 4. The one where the loading screen says you collapse? Well, I start and can't see any walls or anything. I can see the skybox and the outside level (pic attached). If I move around, I fall and die and restart in an elevator shaft (pic of that next post). I've tried it twice. Any help?

I must say I had no errors, menu buttons worked fine and so did level 4, the only thing I found was the transparent door (see my earlier post).

I have to play this game now that I have read the rave reviews.
