Pearl Jam were good until Vitalogy, that album just wasn't good, after that, they couldn't make anything else that could match the early stuff.
The first three Metallica albums are the only good ones, after that, they became sell-outs.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Ten is still, by far, Pearl Jam's best album, and Master of Puppets is probably Metallica's best.

I love Ten, not only is it their best album, but one of my favorites in general. My favorite Metallica album will always be Kill 'em All. That album has great riffs, a lot of energy, and a classic sound.

Yeah, I really like Ten too. It's one of the albums I can listen to from beginning to end, over and over again haha.

I used to be really into Darkest Hour, At The Gates, Killswitch, Shadows Fall, all that - still like them but I don't listen to them much any more to be honest.

I'm listening to that John Butler Trio track at the moment. Sounds really good so far - so mellow...

Also worth a peek
Andy Mckee - Rylynn
Man's a legend. Trying to learn Drifting by him but it's tough going. Prefer Rylynn but at least Drifting's in an almost respectable DADGAD tuning and doesn't use any funky capos or anything.

EDIT for incorrect capitalisation. Well that wasn't what the edit was for, the edit was to correct it obviously. I didn't think "oh this all looks somewhat too pristine, let me JuST go pLay HAVoc with acCepTED rules of ENGLiSH."

Yeah I really love Skillet, their tunes are awesome, some great riffs and even solos in some songs. Nice positive lyrics in the hardrock genre for once, refreshing after listening to all that depressing stuff.

Shame they don't do gigs in the UK, i'd love to see them live.

Metal music is part of my consciousness. I listen to it, I play it, I even think it. At first, I was into stuff like Black Sabath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. But once Thrash Metal came into being, Metallica, Exodus, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, and countless others became everything I lived for. The 90s was kind of a Dark Age for good heavy metal, everything seemed to turn into Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Groove Metal, and more Death Metal. I can't begin to convey how sick I am of Death Metal. This past decade has slowly been getting better, though. There are actually new bands that play true Thrash Metal, rather than just Thrash influenced Death Metal.

To this day, I have not grown tired of head banging to the classics like Reign in Blood, Bonded by Blood, Among the Living, Eternal Nightmare, etc. In fact, I am listening to Testament's "The Legacy" right now as I write this.

I'm working on Swordfight again! Come tell me what you think!

Yeah, I got:

Anathema's Hindsight
Emperor's Equilibrium
Pink Punk's Zombie God Delicious
Sigur Ros' Hvarf/Heim
Finntroll's Nattfodd

Songs from the Above albums:

Anathema - Angelica

Emperor - Curse you all men

Pink Punk - Advertising (Not music, well it has music, but it's spoken word track)

Sigur Ros - Staralfur

Finntroll - Trollhammeren

So I got a range in flavours. Hence I normally say, "my taste in music goes from Sigur Ros to Gorgoroth".

Well budokaiman, you should!
Because those old metalbands set the standard of how metal should sound, and they STILL do. Slayer set the standard for Trash, Emperor for Black Metal, Morbid Angel for Death Metal. Bands like Korn and Tool where influenced by Slayer and Metallica.

Oh, btw, here are some other bands that i like: Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Vader, The Berzerker, Cadaver Inc, Entombed, Anata, Oceano, Mortiis, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Ceremonial Embrace, Deeds Of Flesh, Phobia, Deformity, Marduk, Mayhem, Napalm Death, Anorexia Nervosa, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Saxon, Manowar, Dissection, Malevolent Creation, Dismember, Carcass, Venom, Obituary,...and the list goes on and on...

It's now about ten years that i play the guitar. I learned it by myself. When i was about 8 years old, i had some music lessons to play keyboard. After that i started to play the drums. But my neighbours went crazy whenever i played the drums! Now i make music (metal) with my guitar and FL Studio. Do you want a little example of me playing?

Slayer was pretty good back in the day. Their first three were the best, they're all classics, but their newer stuff is still pretty good.

As for the other bands you mentioned, most of them are a bit too much on the Death Metal side for me. And, as I said, I'm fed up with Death Metal. It's just one variant of Thrash Metal, and it's not even the best.

Metallica and Venom are awesome. I used to be able to listen to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but they're a little too cheesy for me now.

I'm curious, what do you think of Warbringer? I think they're great, but a friend of mine (who only ever listens to extreme over the top Death Metal) said that they're not Death Metal enough for him.

Sure! I also write, play, and sometimes (when I overcome my own laziness) record metal music on my guitar. But I actually had lessons from an experienced guitarist, when I initially began playing. I started playing in my early teens (wow, I feel old thinking about it), and I still play the same songs my mentor taught me to warm up before I start thrashing.

Sounds good, you might want to mix the drums a little lower, as they over power the other instruments a lot. In the DS002 file, I'd recommend ending the second part of the riff with a pinch harmonic instead of a power chord, I think that would have an interesting sound.

It's good, I definitely hear the old-school thrash influence, I feel that pinch harmonics would add a newer, Zakk Wylde/disturbed sound to it. Also, maybe an acoustic, arpeggiated intro, to bring it together. Ending with semi-clean bends with some small riffs between, at a slower tempo. That sentence isn't worded very properly, do you understand what I mean though?

Yeah, i think. You like brutal metal, with old_school trash influences, like Slayer, Testament, Coroner, but also with a modern touch, correct?

Quote: "It's good, I definitely hear the old-school thrash influence"

Well, i am already 41 years old, so yeah, i've been influenced alot by those old-school bands, but i also like death and black metal with keyboards and special effects, so i try to mix al those genres together and give it a special touch. My first musical influences and lessons where purely classical.

Have you ever listened to Behemoth? Or Mayhem? They're both extreme black metal bands that i like.

I'm not a big fan of Slayer either, I can respect them for what music they've influenced that I like, but to listen to them...I can enjoy them given the right moment.

I suppose when you think of the influences in music Elvis and The Beatles have had...I'll refuse to listen to either.

I'll download those songs and tell you what I think in a little bit.

Quote: "Have you heared their last 'World Painted Blood'? It sounds like their old work (Divine Intervention)."

Not yet, I've been saving every last penny I can manage for a new PC, but after that I'm going to do a lot of catching with a lot of things (music, games, etc). The new Heathen album is coming out in a few days, and I just learned about a new Overkill album currently scheduled for February, so I'm really excited.

Quote: "I like Testament, can't stand Slayer (sorry), I'm more of a Megadeth/Anthrax person, when it comes to thrash."

So am I, but I can still listen to Slayer. Hell, I can listen to Kreator (Pleasure to Kill) and Sepultura (Beneath the Remains).

Quote: "I'm not a big fan of Slayer either, I can respect them for what music they've influenced that I like, but to listen to them...I can enjoy them given the right moment."

Well, if you want to be technical, Slayer was heavily influenced by Metallica and Exodus. But then they were influenced by bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Venom, and you could even trace it back to Black Sabath. So it's kind of pointless to judge a band based on it's influences, just appreciate it for what it is.

Alright, I've listened to both songs, and here's what I think:

Overall, I think the drums are a little over the top, but not by too much. The guitars need to be a little higher in the mix, but other than that the overall sound is pretty awesome.

DS001: Nice heavy chugging riffs with a cool Slayer style twang. The final chord of the song needed to hit a little harder, perhaps if there was a final drumbeat with it. Overall pretty awesome.

DS002: The guitars sound a little weak on the low end, but the riffs are very well written. I've never been a big fan of completely computer generated sound effects, so that really took away from the song for me personally. Other than that, another awesome song. If you fixed the two problems I mentioned (although one of them isn't really a problem, just my personal tastes), it would be better than DS001.

Good job overall. I may prefer more Exodus influenced Thrash myself, rather than Slayer influenced Death Metal, but these songs are still pretty cool for what they are. Now I feel inspired to go record something!

Well, for those of you who find Slayer (or ANY metalband) crap, i'd say that you're NOT really into metal, or have NO idea of what metal IS, or STANDS for. Everybody has his/her favorite band(s), but to say that a band is crap, is childish. I like metal in general. From AC/DC to the most extreme black metal bands like Behemoth. When you go to a metal-concert with several different styles of metalbands, are you just headbanging when your favorite band plays??? I don't think so. End of discussion.

Slayer rules!!! Yeaaah, man!

I don't know - if a band's playing that I don't really like I'll walk out for a bit, come back in when someone better's on later (e.g. Arch Enemy before Opeth - watched most of the set but then went out for a bit until Opeth came on, also saw Buried Inside & Tombs the other day but there was a bit of a rubbish band on after so I went and propped up the bar instead).

And crap is possibly the wrong word - it would be better just to say you didn't like it, but to say that if someone says anything bad about any metal band they don't like metal at all and are not equal to you in your supreme appreciation and knowledge of all things metal is a bit harsh

And there is some metal I would classify as crap
