Wow, England did awesome.

Paraguay did good but I was wanting Trinidad to win. Not sure why, just did. One of The announcers was British, and he kept referring to the Britain game lol.

Hmm....well that sucked. Englands goals were great though. I can't believe Cole's went in. But come on! What on earth was that at the end!? Awful defending.

Hopefully sorting out the defence, and playing Gerrard with Wayne and Hargreaves in midfield might solve some problems. The midfield was very good yesterday.

Well, Owen's out. I don't know what Sven was thinking when he was picking the side though. My Granddad reckons he's mentally ill. I reckon he's just having a laugh in his last tournament as England manager.

The following info is stuff I've picked up over the last few weeks. I'm not a football fan normally, so some of it may be wrong.

Owen-6 hours of football all season, no way he was going to be math fit.
Crouch-No. Just no. Played rubbish in all 3 games, scores one goal and hailed as a hero...
Rooney-Injured, hasn't played in a while. He's good, but not on top form.
Theo whatsisface-Sven's never seen him play, inexperienced. It'll be great when we need him against brazil...
Apparently Ashley cole hasn't played much either.

Defoe, the one left behind when we really need a striker is apparently quite a good goal scorer.

Lovely.

Thank god for Terry, J.Cole and Gerrard. I reckon they're the only reason we're still in this.

Doubt a footballer was ever going to be that.

I believe Theo hasn't even played a full premier league football game. Actually just found a quote
Quote: "Walcott, 17, has not played a competitive game since joining Arsenal from Southampton in January. But the striker told BBC Sport: "At Southampton I was 15 going on 16 (when he played in the first team) and dealt with a lot of pressure"
Great.

Quote: "Thank god for Terry, J.Cole and Gerrard. I reckon they're the only reason we're still in this"
Sounds right. We will probably not make it past the quarter finals at a guess. And Argentina or Holland (from what I've seen so far) would murder us by the look of it. Still, you can only hope. C'MON ENGLAND!

Cheers

The hard tackle game just ended...

And, after what seemed to be a 5-a-side rugby match, Portugal beat Holland 1-0 and will be playing England next.

More like best match I've ever seen! I was loving every minute of it :-P

As for the England match - I was satisfied. The formation was beginning to take hold, Eriksson made a couple of good substitutions and Becks scored from a free kick. Its just like the olden days

I just saw the highlights of the portugal-holland match. Holland should have got a free goal for what they did to Christiano Ronaldo. Pure genius-the guy should get a knighthood.

Engand played pretty poorly though. Why put Rooney up front alone? There's no-one to pass it to him, and when he has the ball there's no-one to pass it to! Very smart.

We've got a great chance against Portugal. Especially as they will be missing at least 2 of their best players.

England vs Brazil for the cup anyone? It would suck if it were Brazil and Germany again. (I haven't been paying much attention this year, time constraints and whatnot, and this thread is pretty much keeping me as up to date as I can be lol)

edit: btw, nice shot Beckham. I saw that highlight this morning, gorgeous free shot

Erm they have won one game more than the group stage (which everyone gets to play). And we pretty much get this far everytime. Then fail either in the 2nd round or the quarters. Bit like Henman. Although he has made it to the 2nd day by the look of it (because of the rain methinks).

Now that was unfair. Austraia lose on a dodgy last minute penalty. Damn, I was hoping Italy would be out today. Ah well, there's always the quarter finals for them to fail.

Yeah, we played well though, just couldn't manage to get off any meaningful shots. The controversial penalty was literally in the last 5 seconds so it didn't leave much time for a comeback, oh well, not much you can do now because reversing a decision like that would set a precedent for god knows what.

Thank Whatever religous Icon you worship that you added ...of thievery. I literally jumped out of my comfortable World cup chair and started screaming Bull**** at the screen while proceeding to phone everyone at work I know who is a soccer fan and ranting at them for some odd unknown strange reason. I REALLY DID NOT WANT ITALY TO WIN! I really liked the aussie team and I thought that maybe they could go the whole way with a little luck. They definetly looked to be the stronger of the two teams in that game and I think they deserved to win that one. I also wish the Ukraine Vs. Switzerland game wasn't so boring and that Switzerland had won but there was no controversy in that. Except for the astounding fact that there was only, count it, ONE card in the whole game and it was a yellow and it was unnecessary so basically it was a cardless game. If your an Italian fan watch out...The Aussies are out for your blood. ON a side note I am a neutral fan which means im allowed to rant like this at any team I feel like. Im Polish and we got royally screwed so whatever. Whoever wins wins but I dont want it to be italy..Too many Italian fans.

2010 Im betting Poland, I mean our last two world cups (Including this one) have been.....Mediocre....So its time for us to come in third or something again or maybe even win one?? I mean come on give us points for trying. We need a better world cup though and I think that 2010 will be the one. I might actually have a chance to wear a polish jersey without getting laughed at.

Hmm I guess i'm a pretty weird american for completly loving soccer. THis world cup i'm hoping that England and France do well (and kind of Germany) I was really disappointed with the USA vs Ghana game. That one call on Oguchi that led to the PK just ruined the US and it wasn't even a good call. The one thing I really hope happens in this world cup is that BRAZIL GET THIER DARN BUTTS KICKED! They win way too much and then cry when they don't.

GO ENGLAND!! ... and france.

I wouldn't mind seeing Brazil lose too, but since it is humanely impossible for a Portuguese to support France after all the defeats we had in the last twenty-so years, I'll reluctantly have to support Brazil this time....

Right, enough referee bashing :p

I'm a qualified FA referee, that's my credibility sorted out (or lost..). A game takes place between two teams of 11 players (well at the beginning anyway). The referee is only there to act as a mediator and sort out any problems. If the referee makes a bad call both the sides have to live with it. There have been some shocking performances, Mr. Poll...but regardless the players have to play the game.

The other night, in the Portugal game if I remember correctly there were 16 yellow cards, 2 reds, and 25 fouls...now this is pretty steep but the thing is its not just a World Cup for those who can play football but also for those who cant...The referees are there to do a job and they are assessed every game (A la the Premiership in the UK). Unfortunately in the LOAF (Laws of Association Football) there isn't a Law 18, theres no Law of common sense. If a referee doesn't give a foul he can lose points and this may affect if he was to receive the World Cup final for example. Furthermore, if the referee books a petty foul he brings upon himself the problem he has to book anything like that or worse.

The Portugal - Holland game was pretty crazy and I certanly think that a few of the cards were justified, including Costinha's red card (BUT NOT DECO'S FOR CRYING OUTLOUD!).

However, I did think the Ref was too card-happy and that, rather than dampen the emotions, just made everyone in the pitch and ouside mad at him and at each other. There was a lot of clouded judgment between the players and I feel that derived every bit from the pansy refereeing as from the heat of the game.

I certainly think that did himself a disfavour when he opted to be so strict earlier on, effectively ref'ing himself into a corner and forcing him to keep at it through the rest of the game.

I as well have a FIFA referee qualification and I can tell you that that was not a proper penalty kick. The only people who actually agree with the penalty kick are italian fans of which there are many. When I said referees were paid to make stupid calls I was being a mite sarcastic.

Don't have to be qualified to tell that.

Football is full of cheats. The Italians, Spanish, French, Argentinians...they all dive and cheat, even the best players....do the English? NO...

Watch closer then. We just don't roll around so much or fling ourselves through the air like gymnasts. But do we look for creating fouls? Yes. Do we go down a bit too easily? Yes (unless you are saying grown pretty tough blokes always fall to the floor when touched on the arm). But the argument is that we have to. Because the refs are so rubbish then if we don't cheat just a little then we will be a proud nation of losers rather than a hated nation of (winning) cheaters. And don't forget your own nation doesn't hate you for it Remember when Rooney scored with his hand a while back? Commentators were smiling like no tomorrow. Chuckle chuckle. The little scamp etc. Maradonna on the other hand will burn in hell. But not in Argentina.

Normally refs can spot these things, but it seems not in this World Cup.

Cheers

I thought the attitude towards the English was "I fart on your general direction... your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries"

And there my friends is the reason I hate Christiano Ronaldo. One minute he's on the floor crying like a baby, the next he's up doing fancy crap with the ball.

Does anyone remember Heskey? Huge guy, but always fell over when he was tackled.

Before the match I kind of wanted Argentina to win. Then I remembered what cheats they are. I only saw extra time, but several obvious dives. Plus, that was disgraceful at the end when the Argenitnes just attacked th Germans. Although it was funny when that guy just ran into the middle of it and wolloped someone round the back of the head.
