I'm not hugely impressed by Rooney or, for that matter, some of the appalling diving being done by the Portugeese team. All very poor.

oh man... penalties... with both rooney and beckham down

edit:

oh dear... i always support france in the world cup, and tbh i have a bad habit of always supporting the team englands against, but after what happened at the last portugal game with that swiss refferee i feel absolutely gutted for england.

Rooney's sending off was a farce. England played so well and deserved to win.

So, Euro 2008 lads. Lets go get them.

I didnt see the game but Im depressed that they lost, so far my picking skills in teams winning has gone downhill. Poland lost the first two. The Swiss lost to the Ukraine. The English lost to Portugal. So now there is only france left to keep my spirit alive. GO FRANCE GO!

France beat Brazil in the cup, Brazil hammered Germany in the cup... through sheer numbers I'm predicting France to win the cup over Germany 2-0, and France to beat Italy 1-0. Heed my scores

I disagree. Both their last game and this one were very uninspiring performances. I'm surprised they even made it to the quarter finals the way they were playing - they only scraped past Ecuador, and that was only thanks to a spot kick by Beckham. Granted the players themselves are decent, but as a team they really need more work.

France on the other hand(and Germany for that matter, their's was a good game), played a very exciting match against Brazil, and they truely deserved to win their match.

I'm hoping France and Germany for the final.

DUDES!

I'm not a soccer fan but at work yesterday they had a random draw for an official World Cup soccer ball and I freaking won!

One of the bosses was at the first Germany game (along with a bunch of other employees) and he bought an official ball from the stadium to give away. Damn, it is so nice

A lot of peoples jobs are holding world cup contest sort of things, My mum had England at her work, my sister Ukraine and if Italy wins my Dad's group at Barclays gets a free holiday...so I say screw France, screw Germany, screw Portugal, I want Italy to win, but to be fair from what I've seen out of those left over France deserve to win the world cup the most although I haven't seen a single match of Germany's.

i believe france could beat portugal. i havent seen much of germany's or italy's play, but looking form past games, in 98 and 2000 (eurocup) france beat italy. however, i reckon germany will beat italy, so france will be playing the germans instead.

the only concern imo for france is germany, since they're a well respected team, and they're playing at home, hence have more to play for.

Hopefully by some fluke, italy beat the germans and make the french team's job easier.

Teh Go0rfmeister chill man. just because he calls it a soccer ball doesn't mean you have to get all mad. i sometimes go back and forth calling it football and soccer because i've called it soccer for so long and if I said started saying,"lets go play football." everyone would look at me weird.

Anyway...
Right now i'm both sad and happy. Sad that England lost and then happy that france beat brazil. So now i'm cheering for France only although i'm hoping for a France v germany game for the final.

Yah IM with xrazy ninja I call it both because soccer is in out culture as canadians and football is my European background. Im sad england lost and I hope for a germany win in a france germany world cup final. I really want the home team to win but If either team wins Ill be fine. Notice how I dont even want portugal or italy near the final because I hate both teams immensely. (Did I spell that right?) Anyways congrats to germany or france when they win. (Again note no Italy or Portugal)

I agree, but there were some stupid decisions like taking Lennon off in extra time, he was doing really well and looked like he could have been an asset to scoring a goal for England, it was pretty close, but we should have scored in Extra time and won.

I'm guessing a Germany vs France final, with Germany winning 3-2. Pure ly a guess though, I don't follow the sport at all.

Albeit with 90 seconds to spare, Jamie came on to take a penalty - something he did but the ref hadn't blown his whistle!

Well I guess maybe next time we'll win, I had the feeling we wouldn't take the cup this time, looking at the performance they held throughout the tournament, but then most teams didn't play to their full potential, whilst others played better than normal which is good, I hope France win, or Italy (for that free holiday )

Nah, total let down. At the end the commentators said they did us proud. Really? Played ok basically. And not until the 2nd half (long ball wastes all the time in the 1st). Telling you the croud should have chanted "Chelsea Chelsea" and it might have got Lampard on form again. And scoring one penalty out of four hardly "does us proud". Honestly these players are paid millions and some of the most famous couldn't even score a penalty. I mean how hard were those shots?

Penalties. Every bloody time basically. And annoyingly we go out when we probably had the best chance of winning the cup in years. I mean all the teams left in it seem to be not as good as they used to be (including us unfortuantly). And we could have easily had Portugal if our main players were more on form. I mean how many decent chances did they have? They didn't look that threatening basically.

Well lets hope Portugal lose 4-0 and we can have shots in the papers of Ronaldo crying like a little girl again Hopefully he also loses a few teeth.

Cheers

Oh so true! How come Lampard couldn't hit the damn goal (prefereably the inner net)?

Before the world cup started I predicted Portugal to win it. And after the first group matches I predicted that the final match would be Portugal vs. Germany. And it still can happen.

Funny that England and penalty shoot outs just don't go together.

France was rather impressive. Then again I always said Brazil was over-rated this year.

Based on how Portugal played I can't see them winning it. Even with the other teams not fully firing on all cylinders.

Gotta love the alternative commentary on Sky though. We always ignore the normal boring stuff and switch to the radio 5 stuff. Basically the comments were more in line with "Well all I can say is that Portugal are a team of cheaters". Heh.

I still say it'll be Germany v. France in the final and Germany will crush the French. In this I am supported by the lessons of history. I'm thinking Franco-Prussian war, 1914 ... er ...

The only time the French ever beat the Germans is if they're being lead by short, crazy megalomaniac Sicilians or they've got the English by their side. :-(

i cant actually recall a time other than those occassions when the fernch and germans were actually against each other for something.

anyways, talking about the penalties;

who else noticed the portugese always shot to the left? our goalkeeper certainly didnt, he kept jumping to their right.

One thing that really annoys me though is when payers claim fouls. Whether it's a foul or not is the refs decision, not Beckhams. If the ref doesn't give it, the ball is halfway down the field with good chance of getting kicked into your goal.

The best example of this was the portugese hand ball in their own area. Beckham was right next to him and claimed a penalty. Instead, he should have ignored it and won the ball back and scored. The portugese would be thrown off guard, having known he had handballed it, so it was a great chance.

Also, why do players bother complaining to the ref? Has a ref ever changed his mind? Not once. Ever. All it achieves is a yellow or even a red card. The players should just get on with the game and forget about it. Bloody cry babies.....*cough*ronaldo*cough*....

It's because they want to keep him under pressure. They always ask for a card, showing him that the other team makes bunch of fouls, etc.. Sometimes it works sometimes not. That's the way teams like Italy or Portugal are playing.

im angry that england lost, and also angry that lampard had a suxors tournament with his shooting. Lemon was great(subbed off wtf??) and i would have liked to see walcott on. But hey, next final.

I'm all for france v germany final, dont care who wins.

personally, i'd like the italian and portugese teams to die.

Deco is the only redeeming feature of BOTH those teams.

Nope. On Sky there is an option to switch to other sounds. One is actual pitch sounds, another is kids (well funny), and there is also Five live commentary, which is much better as it's biased as hell

Quote: "personally, i'd like the italian and portugese teams to die"
Dunno. My early years were in italy (Dad and RAF) and my dad wanted to make sure I saw some of the most significant places on earth while we were there. My mum made me go to all those boring places (eg. Vatican) afterwords If you are american or a bird (although these days this is becoming a smaller statistic) then I mean places like Juventus' stadium and of course the San Siro stadium (AC Milan). Interestingly got more of a US impression (US base) than an italian one while I was there, and from the sketchy memories I have one is of how huge the steaks were that americans brought to the "company" BBQs. Esp compared to the european's effort.

Portugese can die though. Amusingly before the game we would have probably been routing for Portugal in the current semi-final setup. Not now, come on you cheese and onion smelling snail eaters!!!

What's this I hear about a Portugal player being kicked out? What did he do?

I wish gambling was legal in my state... I'd put money on France going all the way, as I said before, 2-0 over Germany and 2-1 over Italy. I'll keep reminding you guys that I said these scores so when it happens, you'll all owe me kudos for my awesome call Then again, I did say Brazil was going all of the way, so I guess I'm fallable

Dang...Frings has been banned from tommorows game. Mind you Germany have many options on the bench. Neuville and Odonkor are an amazing substitute pairing.

I reckon 2:0 to Germany tommorow

France owned Brazil!! Woo. It seems that after the match no one was that mad about it from Brazil, Ronaldinho had that permenant embarrassed grin () On his face that made him look stupider than he actually is. I cant believe Brazil is actually out of the Cup, I dont remember seeing or hearing any world cups where Brazil wasnt the First or Second. Cheers to France, Bon nuit nuit!! Big day today, Germany - Italy.

I've been in Berlin at the Quarterfinals. The atmosphere was unbelieveable. When Klose scored the 1-1 the whole stadium went crazy. You couldn't hear your own words, when the argentinia-players went to shoot their penalties, everyone was whistling. But when Lehmann hold Cambiassos penalty, the audience was even louder than when Klose scored.

It must be a bad joke to suspend Frings from todays game of the fifa. The Argentinian players started a fight and if Frings wouldn't have defended himself, perhaps he wouldn't play today also, but for his injuries...

Well so Borowski will take out Totti. My bet is a 2-1 for Germany. But it will very close

... they call it a royale with cheese ...

Didn't they say right after the match that it was the first time ever that Brazil didn't get into the quarterfinals? ACK! I'm rooting for France now because they beat my favorite team... if they can beat Brazil (twice, once in 1998 for the cup win and then this year) then they can beat ANYONE
