I'm pretty sure the original Euro versions never had the PS2 chips in them like in the USA. It was always the inferior software emulation (even though we paid much more for the damn thing). I remember people slagging Sony over the amazing price (compared to the USA that is. The usual $600 is expected for a new console in Europe, not that the PS3 was anywhere near that on release...), the time it took to be released in Europe, and finally how we got worse BC because we didn't have the PS2 chips in them.

Also I heard they aren't even making the 60gb SKU in Europe now. Can't find one anywhere here now, and sod that if no BC on the 40gb. Hopefully that means Sony will release a new SKU here soon then. Won't hold my breath...

Ps. Oh yeah, and I thought the 80gb US SKU has always used software emulation too like the Euro ones? Only the original US SKUs (ie. before 80gb) had the PS2 chips I thought

also right luckly I got mine just before they sold out , there are rumors that a 80GB will come out in Europe

I got the 60G for xmas and I'm totally happy with it. My brother has a 360 and we used to play that ALOT now I agree at the minute the graphics are very similar and to be honest are so indifferent its not even worth comparing them.

HOWEVER people at the minute give 360 the upper as it has the most games but you gotta remember its been here for over a year now, I think people should put the consoles up against each other in relation to there release dates. Lol thats isnt going to happen but i'm just wondering which will be better in a years time?

I think once developers have solved most of the PS3 issues the gap between consoles will become more aparant.

Things that make me go for ps3 are:

-Free Internet Play
-Backwards Compatible with ps2
-MUCH larger discs (file size not physical size)
-More Potential in the long run

Xbox 360 was really good when it was running by itself but now with the ps3 price cut and more developers working with it I think the ps3 will last much longer

The 360 came out ~1 year before the PS3. However, it had more games after one year than the PS3 does now, having been released for one year.

What are you talking about, all new pc games are filling far more than a dvd uncompressed, and likely fit on one dvd simply because they don't want to have to have a 2 dvd game. It won't be long before we start seeing multi-dvd packs just like we see multipe-cd packs.

UNCOMPRESSED, yes, but why shouldn't developers use compression? It's a waste not to. Less data to get off the disc means less loading time. (in theory) Pretty much all of my CD/DVD based games spend much of their loading times with the laser going back and forth. If the volume of data can be decreased, it takes less time to read it. Sure, there's slight overhead due to decompression, but with today's bezerk multi-core processors, how could that be a problem?


Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

I thought someone would call me on that. First off, you and I both don't know which is faster (reading more data off a disc or decompressing less data retrieved from a disc). I would suspect the trade-off in time is not a whole lot.

The deal is, it won't be long before compression doesn't cut it any more and more space is needed to store the game. This is the reason we have blu-ray and hd-dvd. To offer more space for videos/data.

It won't be long. I'm sure 10 years ago people were saying that cd's would never need to be bigger.

The 360 is the best for online play, the PS3 just doesn't cut it. I mean, with the 360 you can play online with your friends/family, in the same room, on the same console, but the PS3 doesn't have this feature.

About which console has the better graphics, I can't decide, they both perform equally and I can't see any differences between them, as I own both.

I'm thinking of buying a 360 when I have the money, even though we have 2 of them in the house, but they belong to my brothers.

Huh? I played warhawk on the ps3 splitscreen in an online server. Is that not what you mean?

The hard drive capacity on the PS3 is no longer a real concern. Sony have come forward and said they officially support people upgrading the hard disk themselves. They have even made it easy and you don't have to buy a special 'Sony' branded one. Any 2.5" SATA drive (just like those in notebooks) should work fine. This is great news, especially as the dual HD TV tuner should be out soon. After removing the plastic flap on the back there is one 'blue' screw to remove and the HDD tray slides out. Stick in a new one (the PS3 will format it for you) and you're good to go. If you don't want to open up your machine you can always add an external USB drive to store your movies, MP3s or whatever.

Removing the backwards compatibility thing is a bit odd I agree.

Just to let you know too, Warner Bros. have now announced that they will be dropping HD DVD from the end of May this year (2008). This brings the list of Blu-Ray exclusive movie studios to Disney/Pixar, Warner Bros., Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate. They also lifted the ban on the adult industry releasing films on Blu-Ray which has seen huge success. Sales are apparently through the roof. Not sure what that says about us PS3 owners though

The PS3 does support split screen and online servers. Thats purely down to the game. Probably the biggest benefit of PSN over XBox Live is that it is not locked down by Microsoft. This has meant that user created content like that for Unreal Tournament III can be easily distributed through it and Sony where happy to help. MS have made it very difficult for companies like Epic to provide such things for users. This is the reason for UT3's delay on the 360.

Why do you care?

Gears of War fits on a single DVD. Oblivion fits on a single DVD. All I'm saying is developers don't NEED the extra space of a BD. I can't see that being an issue YET. Some of the longest RPGs that look fantastic--- Mass Effect for example, fits on a single DVD. The only reason I can see needing a BD for a game is when there's tons of high def pre-rendered movies. Nowadays that is just excess in my opinion.

Sure, in 10 years when games are closer to photo-real, of COURSE they'll need more capacity. But today developers can do a log with dynamic texture generation and real-time rendered cut scenes.

Yeah, I just couldn't think of the proper words at the time. Well, CoD3 allows online spilt screen for the 360, but not for the PS3. Some games for the PS3 do not allow online spilt screen, but the 360 does, most of the time.

haha that's what they said about floppy discs "how the hell are we going to fill up 1.5 megabytes!?" (or however much they are can't remember)

Never heard about it. I've only heard that PS3 version will be better because of blu-ray discs in ps3, but they haven't said what "better" means...

I think there are going to be some exclusive game modes for XBox Live, but Rockstar have made it clear that GTAIV wont be massively multiplayer, so maybe it's just a deathmatch or something.

Personally i think that this is al totally pointless as i own-ed a PS3, and was very bored after completing resistance and motorstorm, the only decent games for it, and swapped it for an Elite.....

I have never lookd back, as i have found plenty of games to keep me occupied, and they are pretty much the same quality as the PS3 ones.....

And it is a hollow excuse to say that the only reason PS3 has so few games is because it is new.....

My local Game shop had 5 PS3 games stocked for it's release, with nought but "movie-games" for the forseeable future,the 360 had waaay more than 5 games for it's release and were planning more for the next few months......

Meanwgile, in PS3-land, they're awaiting Killzone 2, the firrst one sucked so the sequel will probably follow suit......

But in PS3land they're too desperate to care....

That's true. MS gave Take2 $50 million (or was it $25 million?) for exclusive downloadable content i.e. episodes, missions, etc.

And in Xbox-land they continue propagating myths to justify their own decisions to other people that don't care.

360 launched with 14 games. PS3 12. Its also amazing how the 360 library is just a little smaller than double the PS3 library, being out twice as long. Hollow. Statistics are pointless in Xbox-land too.

Why are XB360 owners so bitter?
If you like your system they why are you so worked up?
I have relaxed about the whole thing since I bought my PS3, I gave both consoles a fair trial (I started this thread because I was unsure which to buy) and PS3 is the better suited to me.
The only thing I have against the PS3 is the lack of decent games, but that is a problem that will obviously be solved with time. It's given me a chance to play some PS2 games that I never got round to playing, I really like Canis Canem Edit.
Most PS3 games seem like demonstrations, like the developers are just tinkering with the new hardware (try out Blazing Angels with motion sensing, it's awesome!).
XB360 have taken a few risks and I have to respect them for doing so but I think they will stumble in the long run, PS3 seems to be building up stable power in the market and it looks to me like the black beast will be around long after the XBox becomes extinct.
Essentially they are both good systems, they have slight differences that appeal to different people, and they provide healthy competition between the companies.
I for one am very pleased that the XB360 exists, but I don't want one.

Interesting how so many PS3 owners said they bought one because good games are coming out. Yes, I am one of them, but I hate myself for it When I bought my 360 it was because many good games were already out.

This should be an interesting year where the PS3 will get some better footing.

Heh, yeah. I agree with Jeku. We're holding out on buying ours until the prize drops and better games get out. We did the same thing with the XBOX360 until Halo 3 came out. The Wii, well, friends have that one so I don't need one.

There will be... The PS3 has an entire market of people to appeal to over the 360 (Japan), and the technology to power the majority of the kind of games developers want to make for that market.

Thank you tha_rami. I appreciate that. It could have gone either way for quite a while but I think the PS3 is what has pushed Blu-Ray so far ahead. Recent events have been a crushing blow for HD-DVD, and now that there seems to be a clear winner it should mean the sales figures for the PS3 should go up even more. Especially by those people waiting to see which format is king before buying a high definition movie player.

The word on the street is that on 18th January we in the UK will see the 40GB PS3 bundled with 2 premium games for £349. The games of choice apparently include Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, SingStar PS3 (with the microphones), Ratchet and Clank and 7 others which are little older. Not bad.

Yes, but the studios moved to Blu-Ray because of the amount of players sold (and therefore movies sold) - which mostly consist of PS3's.
