I've noticed that their aren't too many music topics on the board, but there are many conversations that could be had with the subject. I have decided to start a thread on music, you guys can post anything you want on the subject; favorite bands, genres, lyrics, maybe you play an instrument, music videos, what a certain song means to you, anything. Just don't start bashing other people's taste, or start flaming.

Have you heard Voyage 34 by Porcupine Tree, it's a great album, similar to some Pink Floyd stuff, but still has the PT sound.

I recently got into Ska-punk kind of stuff,,, stuff like the king blues and the skints. I just like the way that they say things like it is: "Going to war, to prevent war, was the most stupid thing I ever heard!"

Even inspired me to get a ukulele for xmas

anyone else into that kind of thing?

Thanks,,,

Porcupine Tree aren't really trance though - progressive rock/prog metal yes. Trance? No way in hell... That's like Darude and all that isn't it? (Most famous example I can think of)

Also, there is a music board. I know it's mostly supposed to be useful stuff now I think but I don't see why there isn't the odd thread on there.

I like tons of different music, but right now its all about electronica for me.

- Drum & Bass/Jungle
- House
- Electro House
- Techno
- Industrial
- Hardstyle
- some Trance.. most of it is rubbish though

I would like to experiment with DJing, but the equipment is just too expensive, and I prefer to spend my money on computers anyway

Yes, they are, but I am referring to Voyage 34, not the band in general.

That is why I posted it here, because this is the off topic section.

@Code eater:
Yeah, that stuff is pretty good, it's a nice mix of reggae and jazz into the alternative genre. Do you like the JB conspiracy?

I get that that stuff is trance-like. This is what I would call Trance though
Darude - Sandstorm
Faithless - Insomnia

Completely different

That isn't trance, that is techno. Trance is more slow with keyboard in the back and some guitars and soft drum beats.

Trance definitely has it's roots in techno, but there's a bit of house in there as well and it's kind of euphoric... Much more club-orientated than techno, which is more for raves and suchlike, especially when you get to sort of the darkcore and hardcore end of the spectrum.

Yes, trance is more of a soothing Psychedelic sound. That is more of a club, upbeat electronica sound.

Love it. Not really a fan of punk, but some punk is good, like The Ramones or Jane's Addiction.

What are some of your favorite old-school rock/metal bands? Mine would be:
Scorpions
Megadeth
Judas Priest
Rainbow
Aerosmith (early stuff, their newer material isn't as good as the blues Aerosmith)
Deep Purple
Queen
Dio
Jethro Tull
Rush
The list pretty much goes on forever...

wikipedia disagrees - and as we all know wikipedia is the fount of all worldly knowledge

I must say I'm not a huge punk fan. I like some of the more discordant stuff (Born Against, Gallows, Refused) but a lot of it just doesn't do it for me).

Punk? I'm not really into it, but Misfits and Ramones are awesome. The new band not so much (maybe except Pennywise)...

And from oldschool stuff:
-Metallica
-Deep Purple
-Rush
-Black Sabbath
-Ministry (yeah, they are from the 80's)
-The Beatles
-Budgie

And Speaking of psychodelic stuff - is anybody here into Stoner Rock/Metal? I have recently found out a band called Om and I must say they're awesome. I can say the same about Pharaoh Overlord, an instrumental Space Rock band. Not to mention names like Earth, Sunn O))) or Electric Wizard...

Who do you prefer as a singer (by actual vocal abilities, not songs), Osbourne or Dio? I find that I am in a small group of Dio fans.

I like rap (not sure how many people on here do - in that "what's become of music today" or whatever thread it garnered little support).
It has to be good rap though.
Early Eminem (up to Marshall Matthers LP)
Dre (man's an absolute beast)
Immortal Technique
Obie Trice
Some D12 (also select solo songs by members like Swifty and Proof)
Army of the Pharoahs - Battle Cry
Gravediggaz - Diary Of A Madman

Bits and bobs are good. There's a lot of rubbish too.

I'm not all too much into punk mind you, but I do like a few stuff.

I love Slipknot
Bullet for my Valentine
Avenged sevenfold
Bowling for soup
rise against

I like most stuff, as long is its not too heavy (lamb of good and stuff), too soft (daughtry and the sort), to gay (JLS), to chavvy (MC).

For those of you who don't know what mc is, imagine it as an monkey on crack jibbering away over dance tunes ...

Ermmm... I went to Download Festival in June this year, so that kinda sums up the music I like... It was amaaaazing! But I like most things, not too keen on rap or dance though.

Their new album is softer than their older stuff, but is still great. I'd say that or "The Sufferer and the Witness" is my favorite. I don't really like "Prayer of the Refugee" though.

I like me some rap. Well, I guess you could say Hip-hop. Most of it is not mainstream, but the lyrics and points they get across are stellar. You should check out some:

Aesop Rock - Big Bang
Aesop Rock - Coffee
Dose One - Etherial Downtime
Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Scarecrow Speaks
Atmosphere - Reflections

I used to listen to a lot of punk/ska too, (like: Propagandi, Swinging utters, No use for a name, Antiflag) But stopped listening too it as much. It got boring to me after a while.

I still dig some Hed P.E., Snot, Deftones, System of a Down, Primus, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Buckethead, etc.

But I prefer Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The last three have been the inspiration behind my musical prowess behind a guitar for the last 15 years or so.

I do get a lot of inspiration from other places as well, but when I play, I tend to throw riffs in various places and play what feels right rather than play just what is written (I like to confuse and anger the front man. Kinda like a guitarist with mystique). I ad-lib a lot, and nothing ever sounds the same. I more or less live in each moment of the song rather than live the whole song.

As far as a style, I would consider myself funk-rock/blues.

gothic doom metal
Piano Metal(okay i made that up but i cant think of another genre more fitting for dark the suns!)

Well of course there is good rap out there, just nothing that plays on the radio all they are, are sellouts in it for the money. The real problem with popular rap is it's just people trying to one up each other and has no passion to it.

Personally I wasn't a big fan of Faith No More compared to some of his other stuff

Mr. Bungle>The EP with Dillinger>Tomahawk>Peeping Tom>Faith No More>Mondo Cane

Did I miss anything? Probably. Oh Fantomas. But I don't really know much of their stuff. That stuff with The X-Ecutioners was good too. I know he's done loads more but off the top of my head, that's all I can come up with...

That stuff with Rahzel was just Peeping Tom - Rahzel was in that too. Not when they play live though I think - I saw Butterscotch beatboxing instead on some TV programme.

I personally don't find FNM as interesting. Especially considering Bungle was his first band - that got pretty twisted pretty quickly. I probably would appreciate FNM a little more if it had been like a stepping stone between Bungle and - well normality. It's OK but I wouldn't say as groundbreaking or innovative as Bungle. On the other hand they've written some decent songs, and if it wasn't for them Patton would never have achieved the fame that he did (well I think he probably would, but not so quickly and he probably wouldn't have developed so many different projects). So I've got to love them for that.

Can't find Muckqwaikerjawbreaker on youtube (that's my favourite Biffy song)
Biffy Clyro - There's no such thing as a Jaggy Snake
Biffy Clyro - The Kids from Kibble and the Fist of Light
The Xcerts- Just Go Home
The Xcerts-I See Things Differently (could only find live stuff)
Manchester Orchestra - Everything to nothing
Manchester Orchestra - Jimmy, He Whispers (a little more out of character, but beautiful

Yeah, I still like to see a band take time and create songs that they feel are the best quality that they can do, and not just pump out garbage. As long as they care about music and not money and fame then it is fine.

Bad religion, forgot about them. Great band.
