How about a big sign that says:

I agree with Omega, the code snippits section is rather chalk full of junk, it's hard to find the good stuff in there for all the bad.

Yea, I agree. I've put in 2 codebase entries, and I think they're very worthwhile.(easy camera control/intro to programming)

I find it annoying when I enter the codebase, find some nice code, yet there's missing media or incorrect code. I don't mind fixing the code up a bit to see the effect, but when I have to recreate/substitutre media, it gets annoying.

That's why I think we should have a system more similar to Planet Source Code where you can rate and/or write reviews about submissions. Also a link/button that reports the submission as bad or useless would help Rich know which entries are... well, useless and should be done away with.

I'd like to add my vote for improved search. There is nothing good to say about the current search feature. The search should search the subject -and- the body. You should be able search one or more forums from one search page. You should be able to filter the search by user, date range, attached code, inline code, etc., etc. There should be a search results page maintained which you can return to with a button click.

It's so frustrating trying to find anything in these forums.

Here's an even better idea, why not just go get one of the hundred or so awesome and FREE (or very cheap) forums apps available? Many of them have an "import" feature so you could import all the existing posts. If not, scripting the import would be like a 45 minute job at worst.

Because Rich isn't getting paid to buy software?

Not to mention this one is generally faster, more suitable, implemented into the site and made from 100% TGC power!

I love VB. you can even choose themes for all users. easy to make boards (from what i know, havnt been a mod or an admin for one, but a user of 3or4 VB forums!), implement your own "hacks" download others "hacks", including: shops, arcade, etc

i would suggest using that.

im not saying there is nothing wrong with this one. but from what i read, we can suggest what ever we want. i could suggest to pay me $500 and write at the top of the forum "Darwin is the greatest", and its still a suggestion.
i like VB more than anything else i have used. and if i ever get a forum, it will be VB.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned before, but when people make titles for their threads like this:
http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=20883&b=10
...it can realy screw up the look of a main forum page.

Perhaps some sort of filtering to limit the number of consecutive characters in the thread title is needed, say 2 or 3.

Edit: Or do what Yellow suggests below, edit titles.

You can never go wrong with a stronger search feature but how about a section for most frequently asked questions to be linked through.

I am thinking that if there is a message thread that answers a most frequently asked question that it could be nominated (if the answer is good enough) and a link added to that forum thread.

That could be a great help to newcomers (it would have to be at the top of the list) and it would keep good responses from drifting so far down the thread list that newbies never see them.

You would probably have to divide them by category but the benifit is apparent (to me ) and could take some burden off the elite users but it would add pressure to whoever maintains the list though.

PMs are badly needed.

Also, things no forums should EVER be without:

Breadcrumb trails. You know, like we have now, at the top of every post
"General Talk / What feature next for the forum?"
except those need to be LINKS! Just telling us where we are is pointless. I hate having to hit the back button because there's no immediate link to the forum I was just in. All other forums make those breadcrumb trails into links, so you can navigate much easier.

Indicate what threads you've posted in. The blue/grey thing is great, but it doesn't help me when I can't remember what post I put my question in. If you could put something like a bold black dot over the folder picture to indicate that you've posted there, that would be great.

Formalized sig size restrictions. Right now we have sig sizes running rampant in the streets. We need some kind of standards to be set here!

Multiple color schemes. Let the user pick what color scheme they want, because personally this baby blue/grey just looks too...childish

'Also, things no forums should EVER be without:'

...

'Indicate what threads you've posted in.'

Most forums online now don't have that. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say 90% of them don't. Only the really fancy ones. Which often take way too long to load. Not that it isn't a darn good idea .

I totally agree with the sig size restriction. I also think that stopping newbies from using massive glaring signitures would perhaps lower the amount of people who flame them a bit

I like the my threads section, but I would also like to see other threads I have replied too and keep track of those.

Try using the TOP button. It's the same thing as clicking the Forum part of the breadcrumb.

As for the other features.. well, all I can say is that I've been working solidly on Apollo v3 for 4 days now and it's got a truck load of changes coming, none of which you'll have seen in any other forum out there.

Cheers,

Rich

A much better improved search ability

PM's a must

Some kind of restriction against constant messages (like a 60 second count from last post)

It would be nice to have a category dedicated to a particular problem, for example a "3d", "Sprite", "File", "Matrix", "Camera" I'm sure this wouldn't be difficult to do as it should be built into the forum engine.

Some kind of voting system where we can all give our own opinions regarding something. There have been far too many 'what do you want..." questions raised which have just gone off on a tangent.

Sig-Size restriction

The ability to edit posts (that you've made) would be real handy

I disagree They're just a "nice to have", they're not essential to a forum. Don't expect them this year.

Quote: "Some kind of restriction against constant messages (like a 60 second count from last post)"

You can't post duplicates (threads or messages). That's enough, if someone wants to type quickly I'll let them or at least make the time check limit absolutely tiny (10 seconds?) at which point, it's not really worth doing.

Quote: "It would be nice to have a category dedicated to a particular problem, for example a "3d", "Sprite", "File", "Matrix", "Camera" I'm sure this wouldn't be difficult to do as it should be built into the forum engine."

and if the problem is "using a camera on a matrix" which category do you select? I don't want information overload here, perhaps better educated subjects would help?

Quote: "Some kind of voting system where we can all give our own opinions regarding something. There have been far too many 'what do you want..." questions raised which have just gone off on a tangent."

Polls.. love 'em or hate 'em - I guarantee about 10% of the polls created will be useful, the rest will be stupid But it's not a bad feature to have at all.

Quote: "Sig-Size restriction"

You mean sig IMAGE size restriction. Signatures are already restricted. This is, actually, impossible to do accurately. If they bother you, turn them off in your Forum Profile (I do).

The features I've added so far are far more useful to the actual process of reading and browsing the forum, which is afterall why we're here.

Rich
