If they wanted us to get into the teaching and assessing of typing skills, they would have provided a lot more information. I think these games are just meant to be a bit of fun to break up the boredom.

Big Man...learn to read!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to do you a huge favour and teach you a valuable life-lesson by not giving you the answer. Go read the very first post and see if you can work out what occured between Moggie100 and Rich. I'll give you a clue...it's not sinister, sly, underhand or anything untoward.

Report back...with a statement, not another question

hi batvink

I found this on the second page.
Quote: "Joe - you can email an EXE to me and I'll check it out for you. However I would like to add that 'missiles falling onto a base' isn't totally "family friendly" the concept is sound, but please try and alter the subject matter."

So I understand now thanks for not telling me and I ma sorry for my persistance as I said before I would hate to cock up at the last minute by doing something that was not allowed.

thanks again

Can we record AVIs of our entries to show other people what its like? What about snapshots?

I just don't want to infringe any copyright business :/.

Well, I started yesterday, I wish I knew about this earlier, now I only have like 8 days. I have a wicked Idea and it's coming along good... But god, I wish I had more time. I need to model, texture, animate, compose music, add sounds, and program this entire wicked game in 8 days? Gosh, man... I might need to fix out a new schedule...

Quick question.

My daughter wants to use words taken from an English dictionary.
Does anyone know of a good resource where she can download a standard text based word data file.?

Most dictionaries display their words like this:

Affordment (n.) Anything given as a help; bestowal.
Afforest (v. t.) To convert into a forest; as, to afforest a tract of country.
Afforestation (n.) The act of converting into forest or woodland.
Afformative (n.) An affix.
Affranchise (v. t.) To make free; to enfranchise.
Affranchisement (n.) The act of making free; enfranchisement.
Affrap (v. t. & i.) To strike, or strike down.
Affrayed (p. p.) of Affray
Affray (v. t.) To startle from quiet; to alarm.
Affray (v. t.) To frighten; to scare; to frighten away.
Affray (v. t.) The act of suddenly disturbing any one; an assault or attack.
Affray (v. t.) Alarm; terror; fright.

Etc…

If you tried to rip out the main words it would be an awful task, so I’m looking for a text database of words instead.

Anyone help?

Cheers

Well if words are like that you could easily make a program that ripps words out based on brackets and dots.

If you type 'word list' into google you will find plenty of lists of words without definitions.

@Reaperman: I have attached a word list you can use. Enjoy! (3-9 letters long in alphabetical order)

@Rich: I emailed you a WIP of my game. Just wanted some feedback before final due date. Thanx! (oh yeah...and if you could help me come up with a good title, that would be great)

It was the word list I used for my boggle game. I just downloaded it off the internet and made a program to remove all words that aren't 3-9 letters long (to get rid of words that won't be used). Reaperman asked for a word list, so I gave him a word list (he or his daughter need to edit it themselves because I personally don't want to go through that many words).

While we are the subject of word lists, my word list contains the word "sex", and I was considering taking it out, but I don't see how that's an offensive word unless used in the wrong context. Like saying "The sex of that fish is female." is an ok use, but still it's "sex". So should I take it out or leave it in?

If you are questioning, take it out. It's bound to offend someone someday.

well, the only problem is that if it's going to be a family game, it might bring up un-comfortable questions/issues

Yeah, what benefit is there of actually leaving it in? If there's a possibility it might be offensive, just take it out. I mean, there are over 500,000 words in the English language, I don't think you'll be stretched to find enough.

Mkay, thanks for the input.

[edit]
I've been searching google for about an hour now, and I can't find any bad word lists I could use to filter my own word list with. I've found a couple with the basic four-letter-words, but nothing comprehensive enough to filter something into a "family" rating... does anyone have such a list they could post? I could write my own list, but I'm sure I would miss something.

I'm making my own list right now. Not nearly as many words, but they are all appropriate. I just opened up notepad and began typing whatever words came to my head. Ended up with quite a list in very little time (about as much time as you would be searching for a good list- maybe even less ). I'll post it when I'm done.

Ok, I found a list of bad words, and it is attached to this post. Also in the attachment is a utility program I made that will automatically filter a file based on the badwords.txt list. When the filtering is done, it will tell you how many matches it found and output a log of the words omitted, as well as outputing a "cleaned up" wordlist.

The program will accept wildcard "*" symbol as a prefix or suffix, but not both. If you need both, put two seperate entries using the prefix and suffix versions.

If you find any more words that are "bad", please send them along to me.

Define "Bad". To me, "Phonetic" is a bad word because it isn't spelt the way it sounds, and hence is a self perpetuating oxymoron. And anything that uses a "z" in place of an "s" is just out of order.

Oh...you mean really bad. OK.

Well done SirFire, very useful.

Here is the filtered word list. It did take some non- inappropriate words out, such as arsenals, but this filtered list seems good enough to use for family.
Peter_, you could use the filtered list if your still cleaning the old one...It may save you some time.

I think it would be funny if your typing program started spitting words out like:

Terrorist
Guns
Bomb
...Bush (lol couldn't resist)

and other things that some people would consider bad that doesn't get removed due to not being on the bad words list just be careful guys!

@Peter_

Make sure that filter.exe and the badwords.txt file are in the same folder, then run it.

If that doesn't solve the problem, make sure you are not typing the .txt extension when it asks you for the filename, and if your file is not in the same folder as the .exe you must type the full path to the file.

Next time I'll use a GUI with error-trapping

So how good does it have to be, to make it into the short list? What are the things that are necessary to be in your proto-type?

More than the 11th person

There is no definitive answer, it's like any competition - you have to be better than the rest. I imagine the additional factor here though is that it has to be professional enough to be published.

Keep in mind that if you release a demo in a WIP thread, it will probably be disqualified from this competition.

Also, just a point which may be worth mentioning, is that I understand this program is to be released in the UK, so a word list with American English spellings may not be appropriate. Some Brits may get a tad annoyed if they typed 'Colour' and got told that they spelled it incorrectly!

Wow, the closer to the deadline I get the edgier I get. After so many Red Bulls your mind starts to shut down and imagine secret judging going on right now.

Well, just to let the HMIC know that I have a game, it's pretty solid, and it will be done just in the nick of time, here we go...

Just don't close the polls early! I would sponteneously burst into flames. I would go live in the wild and live on worms and mud. I'll quit my degree plan as computer programmer and become a custodial engineer.

I think I've compiled that damned game 23,000,000 times. If DBP had a compiler counter, it would have broken and consumed my code. Which is what will happen, coincidentally, if Satan suddenly decides it's time to claim me. He won't even bother with me. He'll just take my code.

Now for a bit of sleep before I die...

I'm away for most the weekend but will be playing/testing every single game sent to me so far on Sunday evening and Monday morning. I *will* be telling you in my reply if I think you ought to carry on with the game or not. If I don't think you should carry on I will explain why, but only briefly.
