Hey, don't fret, there are 10 winners. If there were only one, I probably wouldn't even be doing it. I don't think I can compete with Cage Complex. No doubt he's been constructing the Mona Lisa while I've been constructing a very impressive popsicle statue of myself...

Okay, I'm finally done. I submitted my game to Rich and to the ftp server. By the way, if anyone is wondering, it's [href]ftp.thegamecreators.com[/href]. I dropped it into the incoming folder. Where it went I can't be sure, but it's there.

I just noticed those frame rates. I promise it runs higher in the game, usually around 55. But, the beautiful thing is that it's my first fully timer based game. And fully UDT game. And fully written with functions game. It actually runs the same speed despite how low the FPS are. When I die, I want to be buried with it. Which, if I'm not a winner, will probably be sooner than later.

This has been the most stressful week of my life. And I want to do this for a living? Lord have mercy.

Anyway, the game is a little action running game where you shoot the monsters with particles by typing the red words, and move and jump with the blue words. Movement is continuous, and changes direction based on the input. There is a boss at the end of each level, whose words are from the next level and higher health.

The only things I'm not happy with is the jumping and my gravity. I had a nice little acceleration due to gravity function that I wrote, but I guess it would be better suited for a dropping rocks from a window simulation than a typing game. I also need to add real forward momentum to the jumps. Right now it's a curious collection of IF...THEN statments.

Well, I hope everyone else did well, and that it didn't suck doing so. Can't wait to see! There are a couple of you guys I know will make extraordinary games.

Peace!!!

I've attached a screen from my game "Falling Alphabet". I guess it's kind of like Tetris, but you're trying to type the word, or as much of it as you can, before the letters pile it. This is my first completely timer-based game, so I'm pretty happy with it .
It's probably the most minimal example of a "prototype", since there's no menu, and the game ends when you lose...

I have got to the 'incoming' folder of the FTP server but I get a 'permission denied' error. How am I suppose to upload my entry?

Thanks

Here are some pics of the two games I'm working on. They each have three different random themes that they use.
The first is with rising letters, and the goal is to type them before they hit the top. (themes include balloons, circles, and stars)

The second is falling words that must be typed before they stack up out of the screen. (themes include space, prehistoric, and roman)

Both our actually funner then they may sound (especially when you get the speeds way up). I still need to name them, so suggetions are welcome.

I'm so upset now. All of your guys games look and sound 100x greater than mine... I thought mine was good. As I said, I already sent it in, but I guess I can post some screen shots.

My game is called 'Type Type Revolution'. Its pretty much the same thing as DDR, except some twists and its keys on the keyboard.

Level 1:

End of the round grade for level 1:

Level 2:

Well, there is music, and stuff, and Mr.Smiley dancing in the background. I made my own system for the keyboard input. Haha, see, this could never match up to all of your guys graphics and stuff. Maybe the idea is neat... but really, I only spent 4 days on this.

With some graphic and font improvments, it could be really good (can't be sure, since I haven't played it yet). Don't feel all hope is gone, Rich is just asking for a working prototype, not a finished masterpiece.

It certainly could be a good game. Definitely different. A couple things right off the bat, though, I'd drop the TYTT bar and use a bitmap font. As for the gameplay, I'd have to play before I could tell you anything. But it seems like a good idea.

I have no idea why, but displaying DBP fonts increase the poly's being displayed by a HUGE amount. To display my game debug information took about 10k extra polygons. Plus, they bridge the gap from amateur production to slick finished product. Just look at one of Geecee's games. Nice.

Well, hate to admit it, but I don't know how to have your own font. Can anybody please show me how if its not against the rules?

I just sent mine in to Rich, here's a screenshot of the first level.

@Rich or someone else in charge, I'm sure we will be noticeably informed, but where are we informed? E-mail, this thread, somewhere else? Thanks in advance!

Also, is there another stage to this compo? If our projects are chosen to be continued, does that mean we are a winner? Or do all the chosen projects which may be more than 10 continue to compete until the final game is complete?

@Xenocythe- Sharing of tools doesn't matter. Besides, I want everyone's game to look good as possible.

This is the font builder. It creates lame bitmaps though...
http://www.lmnopc.com/bitmapfontbuilder/

Combine that with Monster's free plugin...
http://www.accode.com/dbp.htm

Plus some Photoshop magic and the appropriate shouts out to the makers and you've got yourself nice looking fonts. It's a bit late in the game for all that, but it allows you to replace all of your 'text' commands with 'btext' commands. The only other catch is that you'll have to write your own 'center text' function, but it's easy enough.

@Agent Dink - If anyone knows then they're not telling. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough. Your game looks pretty slick, I'd just do the font thing then you'll be set.

Hey, sounds neat Cash! Thanks for the links to those bitmap text tools! I'll try those out sometime, and should I make it to the next stage of the compo, I'll implement it! It could definitely enhance the graphics.

I think it safe to say most here who have submitted entries are eagerly waiting for a response. I am of course equally sure there are those trying to make another game(or finish one up) as we speak, making there chance to win greater, am i one of them? Yes, yes i am. By what i see right now in the screenshots, the chances of winning will really be slim, great job you guys did. Though i must say, quite a bit of games involving falling text, including mine .

If you're so smart, why are you reading my post?

I actually had this exact same idea, but didn't want to get into the mess of syncing some music with my game! I'm surprised someone else also thought of it also, I was positive it would've been one of the only original ideas I'd had!

I did think about doing something similar, sort of a tracker program with pre-set music, where you had to switch between lanes by typing something to get it to play samples, but the filesize promptly got HUGE due to the number of samples required, and timing was hell :/

The deadline is tomorrow. Does that mean we have to send our entries in tonight? Or can we send them in tomorrow night? It says "by the end of February".

The deadline (as given in the newsletter) is the end of february. So if you want to get anal about it, then that's midnight GMT on the 28th, but I'm hardly going to check up on you here.

Be advised I have so far been sent around 40 games to test. This is far more than expected, and means you will have to wait longer before you receive my email saying if I'd like you to carry on or not. I will have replied to everyone by the end of this week, but do NOT keep emailing me saying 'have you played it yet?' -- if I've played it, you'll know because I will reply to you. No email = I've not played it yet. Ok?? Ok.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah right BatVink. I'm quite sure you're guaranteed a win. Some people, just by nature of being fabulous, are.

Hey, I sure haven't seen 40 screenshots. What gives? Why is everyone being stingy? I want to have a pre-judging ceremony. I want to see de gamez!!!!

I highly suspect that most of the 40 games are the same, though, and whipped up over a weekend. If a game is identical to another, one of them has probably already lost.

In unrelated news, I was so sleep deprived from my little video game making adventure that my body is still recovering. I missed both of my classes yesterday. When I woke up to pick up my daughter yesterday, I felt like I'd been poisoned, but somehow I'd escaped my assassination attempt. Good times...

Take a look through some of the previous compos. The quality ranges from downright dire to complete class. I reckon you can remove 25% in the first 60 seconds of testing. The top-end is difficult to reach though and usually features a handful of people who haven't even commented on the compo.

The sad thing is, unless you buy the final product, you'll never see the top ten

Anyway, back to my ASCII scrabble game, with a 4x4 board

Wonder who the other - and so far silent - people are...

Its kinda of spooky, to know that there are a fair proportion of the 40 people entering just watching this lot... silently...

Or parhaps its just me 'cos i'm up so late
